This is for our Susie/kittylover4ever who apparently has never eaten them! Though not a fav of mine, my dad loved them and so did mom.

Mom would slice them - not too thick - dredge them in corn meal batter and pan fry.

Any other versions out there?

I actually only made these after I saw the movie. Had never heard of them before.
I have always eaten fried tomatos with a sunday fry up though...just not the green battered kind..
THey are delicious!

I also noticed that when I was travelling through the US, everyone has this white gravy with their breakfast. Especially in rural areas, we would get served these HUGE breakfasts. It was so much food (the first time I tried grits as well) that I thought some Americans must only eat once per day

The white gravy was probably milk gravy with sausage in it, usually served with biscuits. My kids love it. It's too rich for me to eat more than a little bit, though.

I'm eyeing the green tomatoes on my plants now, wondering if I want to be adventurous enough to try frying some!

yes, yes, there were biscuits. Homemade and warm! I felt like I was in some kind of time warp! I thought the gravy was strange as I am not used to white gravy..I wondered what was in it..Thanks!

LOL My garden is feeling a bit raided at the moment....and less a few green tomatoes. Now, for an internet search of a good recipe!!!

I can give you the recipe for biscuits & gravy, too. It's easy!

Just a small bit of flour mixed in with the meal helps it stick better too....oh, and if you peel 'em, you won't lose the breading on the outer edge either.....*sigh* now I want some!

Yes, I would love the recipe, Sunnicat..That would be great...BF would love it. Its funny how food culture can change so distinctly within only a few hours away in N. America...
Also, what exactly are grits?
Are there any other recipes significant to geography that anyone would like to share?? I would also LOVE a recipe for LA gumbo if anyone has one..

You'll probably have to convert these measurements. I don't usually even measure anymore, so I hope these are right!

Sausage Gravy Recipe:
4 tbsp. butter or margarine
4 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 dash pepper
2 cups milk
1 lb. sausage

Directions:

Prepare medium white sauce. In small saucepan melt the butter or margarine. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper, use a fork to blend the flour in. Add milk all at once, cook and stir over medium heat till thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir 1-2 minutes more. Cook 1 pound of sausage in a frying pan. Add to the white sauce and add a little more pepper to taste. Cook until heated through. Serve over biscuits or toast.

As for grits, I don't eat them, but here's your answer:
Grits are made from the milling of corn kernels. The first step in the process is to clean the kernels; then, the grains are steamed for a short time to loosen the tough outer hull. The grain kernel is split, which removes the hull and germ, leaving the broken endosperm. Heavy steel rollers break up the endosperm into granules, which are separated by a screening process. The large-size granules are the grits; the smaller ones become cornmeal and corn flour.

Another approach to fried green tomatoes is to do them the same way as you do ripe tomatoes for the Sunday fry up. There are probably variations on that theme, too, so here's how it happens in our family: slices of tomato no less than 1/2 inch thick, sprinkled generously with sugar and freshly ground black pepper, fried in the fat from the bacon, until just softened, not mushy, flipped halfway -- green tomatoes take probably twice as long, and will never be as soft as ripe ones, but they are soooooooooo tasty. And don't you love the mess they leave in the pan for the eggs to go into!
Also great fried in butter, if not part of the fry up.

oh yeah
I love the messy stuff in the pan to fry the eggs in...I like to fry the eggs alongside sometimes to save time too...

I went out and got some sausage anyway to try Sunnicat's white gravy recipe for tomorrow's brekkie. Can't wait...hopefully my arteries will forgive me..

I love fried green tomatoes but nobody will give me any. They want to keep them on their vines until they ripen. I have to beg if I want one or two. We had them growing up in the Canadian Maritimes and to me they taste very much like fried eggplant. I just dredge in flour and fry in butter then I sit and enjoy them with homemade bread and a cup of coffee.

My husband and daughter won't touch them but that's fine with me since I have such a hard time getting them anyway.

Just sneak into their gardens at night with a flashlight and tape a $5 bill to the vine

Time warp? LOL!!! That's the standard breakfast of choice for almost everyone I've ever known. In fact, biscuits and white gravy are served every morning in the cafeteria in our office building.

It is sinful, though. I got addicted to having a sausage biscuit every morning and had to force myself to replace it with Slimfast

Mmmm... That makes me crave the country chicken smothered in white gravy that they serve at Cracker Barrel.
