What can I do? How far can I go?

I've had a bit of a dilema lately. I'm living in the home of someone that I thought was a friend. Lately, I'm finding that these people are not the kind of people that I want as my friends.

This is Fiona. These people got her from a private party because the wife wanted a cat to snuggle with. Says something about the husband, I think. Fiona is the most lovable furball I've ever seen, and she is very friendly with most everyone accept for the people that own her. In the beginning I had my reservations about her coming into the home. She physically attacked my kitten several times in the first few days. Now, Fiona and my kitten are like sisters. They even sleep side by side on the bed with me at night, and occasionally they bat at each other playing. My Misty just barely tips the scale at 1 pound while Fiona is a full 36 pounds. The wife is so caught up in her own aches, pains, and psychosis that she could care less that the cat even exists. The husband who is around her most of the time won't even make the effort to bend over and pet her once in a while. I'm the one that makes sure that she's fed, groomed, and cleaned up after (litterbox cleaning and whatnot). The wife has literally slammed the door in Fiona's face (actually hit her and knocked her physically across the hallway) on several occasions, and basically won't make any effort to even pet or play with her.

Fiona has never made an aggressive move towards anyone until just recently when the wife reached for her and Fiona bit her on the wrist. Once in a while she would nip me on the tip of the finger just to let me know she was there, but with the wife, she bit her hard enough to draw blood. Fiona loves her catnip. I give it to her and she is totally excited. The wife tries to give it to her and Fiona won't even go near her. I don't know what they did to her, but she appears to be terrified of them.

Recently, this couple decided to move to Tennessee for the winter, and they plan to take Fiona with them. The husband commented that if they can't get Fiona to respond to them that he would take her out and drown her and they would find another cat for the wife. The idea of letting this happen makes me absolutely sick! My little one is very important to me. Scratch my car with a nail and I would be angry, do something harmful to my cat and you'll see murderous rage like never before.

I called the local humane society and they said that there is nothing that I can do unless they actually kill the cat. I told them that I want to prevent this and they said the same thing. Calling the local law enforcement is out of the question as this couple has friends in the departments and I would have no idea if I was talking with one of their allies or not.

I have considered actually taking the cat when they are not around and hiding her with some friends that would take care of her. I can't let the husband kill her. That is simply out of the question.

Is there anyone out there that can offer any alternatives? If I take the cat, how far can I go to protect her? I'm at a loss about what to do. Please help.

I in would no way advocate doing anything against the law *ahem* because cats are considered property and that would be stealing.

But you be careful and not accidently "let her out of the house" - you hear!

That being said
- these people definately should not own an animal.

oh, that is a hard situation. What if the cat "accidently" escaped to the arms of a loving family? The door might have been left open. People like that shouldn't own a cat. Would you feel worse if you took her illegally or if you left her in a harmful situation. It depends on how well you could lie to these people. In the end you have to live with your own desicion. Sorry, good luck!

Gosh, it would just be a terrible shame if Fiona were to wander out of their house one day, wouldn't it?

Seriously though, have you talked to them about the possibility of re-homing her? Since they both don't seem to give two hoots about the poor baby, I'm thinking they'd be more than happy to have her "off their hands" so they can continue their lives as serious douche-bags. Seriously, people like that just make me so freaking mad! I'm sorry that you have to live with these people, but hang in there!

I figure that if it comes to telling a few lies or leaving her in this situation, I can live with the lies. I couldn't live with letting her be killed. These people have no business owning cats or any other animal. They are too self absorbed to give the animal the kind of care, love, and attention they need, and deserve.

I suggested it to them, but they are so possesive that she will just become another of their possessions to do with as they please.

Now, I realize that different states have different laws, but here in PA, since cats do not have to registered, like dogs do, (through their licenses and rabies vaccinations), cats are considered as "possession is 9/10th's the law". Meaning, whoever has the cat, is who it belongs to. This I was told from a worker at my area humane league, when I had a similar situation with a neighbor. Check to see if this is true in your area, then you'll know if you could just take the cat, or not. If you're not allowed to just take the cat, well, I agree with Talon, if the cat "accidentally" gets out, well then what can you do?

Good luck and I hope you're also making plans to move out. Let us know what happens.

There is nothing funny about this situation, but my monitor just about wore my gingerale when I read...
so they can continue their lives as serious douche-bags

Seriously, though, I suspect there's not all that much you can do, other than "fail to prevent" an escape -- however that might be engineered -- unless you can convince them to rehome Fiona before they leave, and perhaps assist in that process, if they can be persuaded to go that route.

How they expect to "get Fiona to respond to them", when the most attention she's had from them was to be treated as a nuisance, is beyond me. They aren't fit to have critters.

If it were me I would accidentally let the cat out...which really means that I would find a SAFE place for the cat to live. Too bad you can't talk them into letting you have her, since your kitten and Fiona get along so well.

In all honesty, we all know just by reading your post that Fiona is not safe, and certainly not happy, with these people. They should NEVER be allowed to have a pet...which also worries me because once Fiona *runs away* they'll probably run to get another kitten...and what happens when that kitten hates them too (as i am sure it will since they sound like jerks when it comes to owning an animal)? they'll just talk about getting rid of that cat too.

When there is talk of killing an animal, that's where i would step in most definitely and do something about the situation. There's no time to sit around and wait to see if that was just a comment he was just throwing around.

Please keep us updated on this!!! Bless her heart, I want to see her go to a good home!

It may be illegal to steal a cat but I did! People next door had Missy and had too many cats and made her stay outside. She was emaciated and needed vet care. I coaxed her into the garage, one day, snatched her up and took her to the vet. She tested negative to AIDs and Leukemia so I kept her. Eventualy they figured out but never called the police.

When these people are moving for sure, either board her out somewhere and pretend you have no idea where she went, or get friends to keep her. Then YOU move and adopt her and save her life!

She's a beautiful cat....reminds me of a cat I had as a teenager. I wish I could happen to be strolling by when she "accidentally" got out.

I offered to keep her and take care of her myself, but that was out of the question for them. Their response was that she would be a financial burden on me. I'm not worried in the least about this. I make good money on my job, and with my sidelines, and I've been accused of spending too much on my own cat at times. Oh well, I enjoy it.

Finances don't enter into this. I pay for her food and have paid for a couple of visits to the vet since she came here. The money makes no difference to me. In a couple of weeks I will be moving into a place of my own which is more than big enough for two cats.

did you make it clear to them that she wouldn't be a financial burden on you? I'd keep bringing up how well your kitten and Fiona get along, and how good it would be for Fiona if she lived with you...

I 100% percent agree, Tracy!! And it makes me sick to my stomach someone could even THINK about killing their animal!!

I think alot of us are thinking along the same lines...accidently leaving the door open and poor kitty escapes!

This poor kitty doesn't have a voice to speak out with, so it's up to caring people like yourself to do it for her!, find a safe place for her. Animals are not posessions, they are living beings..Good luck with everything!

I agree. Take her to a friend's house when they are out. Here's what you do: Pick up several bags of groceries/stuff on the way home and tell them you must've accidentally left the door open between trips when you were bringing the groceries in. You thought she was in the house and went about your way. By the time you went to look for her at feeding time, she was long gone, but "she'll come back when she gets hungry"...

If you're certain you can't change their minds, I would let the issue rest until then, or they'll immediately suspect foul play.

These people never lock the doors to the house. They will leave for days, and even weeks with the house completely unlocked. Presents some opportunity.

I even offered to pay them for her but they wouldn't hear of it.
