I had my surgery Thursday on my leg and foot. The doc said it went well. I'm still in and out of conciousness. My blood sugars and heart rate went way up while in the hospital and I had to have some insulin. (I usually control my diabetes very well with diet). I'm non weight bearing on the right leg and foot for 6-8 weeks. Finally had first shower since day of surgery. Gawd that felt so good. My infusion pump came home with me and ran out today
But I still have a lot of other drugs to keep me relatively pain free and knocked out.

Its good to hear from you...wishing you a smooth recovery. I don't know I'd manage being non-weight bearing on one leg for 6 to 8 weeks - eek!

Prayers & healing vibes coming your way!
So sorry that you have to go through this, but I commend your positive, upbeat attitude!!
It's going to be rough, using only your left leg, for awhile - I hope that you have a good support team to take care of you - you sure deserve it!!
I really appreciate your posting this, it must have been an AWFUL LOT of effort, just to type this, esp. when you're taking meds!
I salute you for it!! Please keep us updated when it is convenient, okay? I will keep you in my thoughts & prayers - I often think about all the encouragment & wonderful advice that you gave me when I had rescued that Himmy that was so emaciated & just masses of furclumps! Sandie (the cat) & I thank you in our hearts daily!
Take Care, Susan

I'm so thankful the procedure went well, Tammie! Bet that shower sure did feel so refreshing! 6-8 weeks, oh my! Have you called your Dr. regarding your infusion pump running out? Hopefully your on hand meds are sufficient in keeping you out of pain. It's not at all unusual for your blood sugar to become elevated due to pain or stress. It will be back in order in no time! Please feel better very soon and when you are able, please keep us updated!

Tammie, I'm glad the procedure went well, and I wish you a very speedy and comfortable recovery! Gosh, I really feel for you not being able to put any weight on that leg for 6-8 weeks. I just sprained my ankle and couldn't put weight on it for 3 days and I couldn't hardley get around! 6-8 weeks??? You're to be commended for being able to do that!!

Quick note. Today I have feeling in my foot and leg again. The effects of the block or infussion pump thingy are wearing off. I can actually wiggle my toes a little bit. Still pretty doped up. Dreamed last night I was in a windowless room with cannibals.
I keep the cable news station on all night so that when I wake up it sort of brings me back to reality and I'm not so scared. My right hand and arm are really swollen and red. I'm thinking cause that's where my IV was. It feels weird. Back to bed now....

HELP!!! I'm so freaking itchy I can't stand it!! Does anyone know if pain killers can cause lots of itchiness? I don't have a rash anywhere.... just really itchy. I'm going to call the doctors office when it opens but I'm going nuts here. And I'm still so puffy and swollen all over. My one arm I had an IV in is the worst but also my face is pretty puffy. I haven't even hardly been able to sleep tonight because of the itchiness.

It's possible..is there a 24 hour emergency line you can call? Is it getting worse, any new symptoms? You may be able to find an online PDR - can you do a google search on the pain meds you are on?

Do you know what your infusin drugs were? If they were morphine based it is common to be itchy and a little off tempered afterbeing off of it. please check your sugar levels regularly b/c when my F.i.L. got his leg amputated he went all sorts of wompy because of the change in blood sugar (i know it's not the same, but still, post opp is very touchy for diabetics.)

Those are some good thoughts. But my blood sugars have been good since I got out of the hospital so I tend to think that is not it. But you're absolutely right that your BS can go bonkers post-op! My infusion pump had bupivacaine which I think is like lidocaine and numbs my whole leg (local anesthetic). The pain killer I'm on is Lortab 7.5/500. I think the 500 part is tylenol.

Thanks Pat. I called the doctor this morning and he said the itching is normal for narcotics as long as I'm not having trouble breathing and/or have a rash. And the puffiness is from all the extra fluids they gave me in the OR and after. I'm really not having trouble breathing at all so that's good. He said I could back off the Lortab and try just ibuprofen if I want but I'm not prepared to do that yet! I'm having kind of a painful day here so I guess I'll put up with the itching.

Other then that, My blood sugars are pretty good. I'm just having a rough day with pain and I didn't sleep much last night.
