Hi,
I'm new here, and I thought I'd just for some advice... .
We've had a stray tom around for about a year - we've been feeding him, and he hangs around a lot. Recently (a couple months ago) a female cat, not spayed, has been hanging around. The tom cat is very friendly, and we think he was dumped here because our neighbors down the street adopted his brother - looks just like him - anyways, the female got pregnant and we just found her kittens a couple days ago (vet said they were about 5-6 wks). We were able to catch the kittens using a dog crate, but we had to use a havahart trap to catch the mother. The kittens were checked by the vet and they are 100% healthy, which is great. We have been socializing the babies, and they seem to be doing great. We plan on adopting them out in a couple weeks when theyre ready. Right now they are all in a large metal dog crate with a house, litter box, and food/water. We caught the father and had him neutered so we dont end up with hundreds of cats around. The problem is, the mother is pregnant again - about 5 weeks (we think). We plan on letting her have her babies and them putting them up for adoption as well. But I dont really know anything about cat pregnancy. When should we remove her current babies? Does anyone know what we should do? She's really scared, not that aggressive - doesnt really hiss - just very scared. What's the best way to socialize an older cat - she's probably less than a year old though. (I know this is very long - lol). . . Any advice or suggestions would be very helpful. What should we expect with the second litter? We plan to have her spayed after her 2nd litter is gone. Thanks.

Our rescue places kittens at 10-12 weeks once they have been weaned and have been spayed/neutered. The earliest to place kittens is 8 weeks. I would suggest looking at the Pregnancy forum for answers for what to expect.

If she was under my care, I would get her spayed.

Ditto what Hissy said, I've done it. After watching Juliet lose her first litter (as a feral) I couldn't see making her go thru with birthing the second, and then trying to find homes for them too. She was maybe 15 mos old and unfortunately I couldn't socialize her enough in the time I had to even get her to a no-kill shelter. But, I know that she is a scrapper, has been vaccinated, and will not be contributing to the overpopulation. It's a personal decision, but I thought I'd offer my experience. Five weeks is not too late to spay.

okay. Well we plan on getting her spayed after she delivers, but our vet thinks its not a good idea to spay her now. The kittens are basically socialized and we already have homes for them, and some lined up for the next litter. But, how would I try and socialize the mother. She is not really feral or wild, just timid. She's less than a year old. Anyone have any ideas on how to get her to relax and used to humans more? Thanks for the advice.

If you plan to place the kittens then you should follow up to make sure that all the kittens are spayed/neutered. Additionally, you should consider if someone decides they can no longer care for these kittens...whether you are willing to take them back and place them again. I would suggest requiring that the kittens are indoors only and microchipped.

As far as socializing the mom....it will really depend on her behavior once she has weaned her kittens and is spayed. Make sure you set up the appt. to have her spayed once the kittens are 6 weeks of age so she doesn't get pregnant again.
