At the begining of the summer I planted the small salad cucumbers. Well, when I went out today to get the first few that have grown I found this:

Its all skinny at one end and HUGE and bulbous at the other!!!

Just thought I'd share

I wonder if its all fleshy or seedy? lol Guess I need to make a salad tonight to find out!

That's strange...

It could be due to incompete pollenation of the flower.

Come on over and pick in a couple of weeks for some insane reason I planted 4 plants and I don't really like them. DH worked at a pickle processing plant in high school the stories he could tell-he will NEVER EAT THEM!!

Watermelon envy?

I was actually a little nervous about opening this thread. My mind plays terrible tricks on me when I see certain sentences or words.

I sighed in relief after I opened it and saw the picture - then ....... I couldn't stop laughing!

Yup ! I know I got some snide remarks from the husband figure when he saw this thread! I remember I used to plant scads of pickling cucumbers, but for some reason never had any luck with them. The salad cukes however, made up for my lack of success with those.

I've been getting 'maters for about a week now. I only planted 4 plants, beefsteak, and I think that was just the right number. I go out and pick one to go on my lunchtime sandwich every day and the remainder goes on an afternoon snack sandwich by itself. Ummmmm! I love, love, love, 'mater sammiches!

I'm not sure what is funnier - the thread title or the picture of your cucumber.

Update: Cucumber tasted fine. When hubby came home and saw that he just looked at it.... looked at me.... looked at the cucumber.... and walked away....

I normally have a really green thumb too.

Well, I know what happened to your cucumber Beth. It ate way too many Blizzards from Dairy Queen over the past few weeks and it didn't get enough exercise. Tell the cuke it needs to get off its butt and do something! Lazy cucumbers... They think they can just lay around in the dirt until someone comes along and picks them up.

Looks as though its a mineral deficiency that has caused it to swell, either that or you had a dry spell and then watered and its now suffering water retention! Had that been the case, the outer would have split, so stick with the mineral deficiency. A liquid feed would be a good idea, inc horse manure in a bucket of water for a few weeks and then use the water (smells a bit) on the plants inc tomatoes, completely natural but its incredibly good for these plants, makes them grow like no ones business - K

I'm with you, Ryan. I'm thinking it just needs some more cardio in its exercise routine. The obesity epidemic has spread to vegetables!!! Is nothing safe??

Wow. Thanks Kev. I have a minteral feed that I can use. I try to water the plants daily (they are in large pots on my patio). I'll get out there and work with them.
