I have 2 kittens (10 weeks & 5 mos). One of them has diarhrea and I'm pretty sure it's the 5mos. old persian. He's free fed Chicken Soup dry food for kittens and has VERY little of Merrick's natural canned food. He prefers dry. The other kitten could eat the canned food forever! How do I go about finding out what's giving him the diarhea? Should I eliminate everything in his diet except the hard food to see what happens? How long before I should expect to see results? Thanks for all you advice fellow cat lovers!!!

Where did the kitten you think is having this problem come from? Has he seen a vet to be checked for parasites? How long have you had him, what was he eating before?

Sorry for all the questions, but it may help to rule out the obvious culprits first, then work your way down to the less obvious things.

Of course, the very 1st thing to do is have a vet assessment. Once he has been given a clean bill of health, then you can look at diet or dietary indiscretion. If he hasn't been in your home a long while, it may be he was eating something different where he was prior and food changes are notorious for causing a case of poopy butt.

The diarrhea is something new in the past month. His stools were fine before. The only thing that's changed is his diet. I've completely stopped the wet food for him. Want to see if that's upsetting his tummy. If that doesn't work I'll try a different dry food. He's only been on this dry food a couple of weeks. Thanks for your advice!!

Diarrhea in kittens is generally cause by 1 of 3 things:
1- a change to wet food. I recommend iams chicken wet food in these cases as its mild, bland food that's easy on the stomach.
2- Worms, easily treated by your vet
3- Parasites like Coccidia and Giardia

If adjusting the diet doesn't work I would look at the other causes, and regardless, consult a vet without delay
