I was given a liquid med to give my cat twice a day for a week. What is the proper way to do this, from the side of the mouth? When I tried from the front she kept fighting me and it splashed everywhere.

I have always done it from the side. It would be hard to discribe how I do it exactly though. But yes from the side is what works for me.

This is the way I give cats or kittens liquid meds. I am giving some now, actually.

I sit on the floor, legs out in a "V." I take the cat, and put the cat between my legs, and close as can be, face facing away. I measure out the medicine, and hold it in my hand. Using my free hand, I grab under the cat's neck, gently, and keep one finger on top of the head, and hold the head still. I put the syringe/dropper up to the mouth, and as soon as the mouth opens, I drop it in, but still hold their head until they take the medicine. Sometimes, the kittens will be unreasonable, and I must force their mouths open. To do this, I take my two side fingers, and put pressure at the jaw, and drop the medicine in when I get the mouth open.

Hope that helps!

These ideas definitely helped. Thank you so much! Cats can be so STRONG when they don't want to let you do something, so being able to control them until they take their meds, is so important.

You are so right. I was giving my (then 6 week old kittens) liquid meds. and there were 2 out of the bunch that were so strong!!! At 6 weeks old if anyone believes that!!!

I do go in from the side of their mouth too. For Lilo and Garfield as well as the kittens.

There's no place like home
Always from the side. I have snuck up on cats when they are eating and simply slip the dropper in the side of their mouth while they are eating and they don't even skip a beat with their food. Others I have to restrain with the "V" legs on the floor. If they don't see it coming, it goes a lot easier.

Always reward them with a treat afterwards. It makes it far less stressful if they know they get a reward after the medicine.

As everybody says - from the side. And if so happens that you do not get it all in, put the rest on the cat's front paws. He will lick it off, no matter the taste!

Liquid meds are the easiest to give, IMO. I can give liquid meds to my cat, but try to pill CJ! Wow! She's little, and fiesty, and you will leave with scratches!

Thanks for the great advice! I am also giving her a half-tablet of something else, and this morning I tried 5 times because she kept working it back out of her mouth. I finally thought I had done it, until this evening I found it in her food bowl!!! Pills are much harder, but I will get better at it.
