Flat Chested Kitten Syndrome

Does anyone here have any experience with flat chested kitten syndrome?

I had one kitten with this - it's called Pectus Excavatum. She did not have the most severe case, and grew up to have a fairly normal life.

I have often thought this syndrome is almost similar to lordosis in human babies and in that sense, in a severe case, corrective surgery on the kitten would give him or her a good life with few problems - maybe a heart murmur but that is easily treated. Many kittens with the mild type lead long lives and have few problems. Good parenting and a good vet are the only prerequisite.

The kitten feels like it has about one half of an inch between its ribcage. I have never felt another kitten before with it but it does feel severe. I have done some research in the last hour on it and I think the kitten will be fine. Most kittens with this condition die before three weeks, they have difficulties breathing, are thin, and are not strong. My kitten does not have any of these. He is very strong, fat and his breathing is normal. He is also almost five weeks old.
Do you think that he needs to go to the vet now? I was going to wait until they are six weeks so they have have their first round of shots.
I am never going to use the same stud again. One of the other kittens in the litter died from a heart murmor when it was one week old.
I saw in Cyberkittens post that they do surgery for heart murmors. The vet told me that you cannot preform heart surgery on a kitten one week old. Do you know if this is true?

If you feel the kitten is doing well - breathing well, progressing the same as the other kittens, I'd run it by my vet, but wait until 6 weeks. I would let your vet be your guide re both this condition and whether or not this kitten also has a heart murmur. Please keep in mind, that unless someone posting here identifies themselves as a vet or a vet tech, and even then...there is no substitute for your vet and a hands on examination.

I talked to the vet in Petsmart today and she said to wait until its first round. I do not think that it will die. It has been making good weight gain, eating, drinking, and nursing on its own. Not to mention that it is wild as ever. It has no problems breathing. I have read alot of good articles on it and I am confident that it would be showing more symptoms if it was going to die. Most kittens that have this disorder die before they are three weeks old. My kittens will be five weeks tomorrow.
