I bought a Drinkwell fountain for my kitties.
I have 2 questions...

# 1...how often do you change out all of the water?

# 2...I have concerns about the fountain being made out of plastic. I never use plastic food or water bowls. I always use glass or ceramic. In the Drinkwell instructions, it says that some cats might have an allergic reaction to plastic. I am not worried about an allergic reaction because it would be obvious, but that does reaffirm my understanding that plastic in not an entirely inert material. My concern is about my cats being exposed to possible long term toxicity from only drinking water that has been exposed to plastic.
What is your opinion about this?

I change and wash mine once a week.
As for the plastic, it's more of an issue with an allergic skin issue. There wouldn't be any heath risks, or anything associated with it being made from plastic, or the plastic releasing any harmful chemicals.

I don't really think it's an issue if you clean it regularly and replace the water. I've used two FreshFlow fountains for months with no problems, and one of my cats is prone to feline acne, and he's been clear of that for some time, too. Besides, there is a filter.

Thanks Coster...I just got it yesterday. So far Dexter & Sadie have not drank from it. They just sit & stare at it.

I think that once they get used to it...they will.

I had 2 Fresh Flow fountains for Molly (one upstairs, one in the cellar). I bought the first one when I caught her drinking out of the toilet. She never used to the toilet again. She was fascinated by them and drink constantly. She drank so much that I mentioend it to the vet and the vet even tested her for diabetes just to be safe (she was fine). I clean them every week and a half to 2 weeks. I have set one up for Abby now, all I have seen her do is play with the water, but my husband has seen her drink from it.
