When you were a child, were there any things you were afraid of that might make you laugh thinking about it now?
I remember some painted, wood carved masks (African style or something) that some friends of my parents had in their basement. When we'd go over there I'd be all excited (at the ripe age of 3 or 4) to drive around the authentic looking pedal car downstairs, but these scary masks bothered me if I was alone in the basement, so I'd go back upstairs soon after anyone left the basement, but without telling them why.

I have a cousin who had a cute toy barn from Fisher Price when he was 4 or 5. When you opened the barn door you would hear a strange moo sound from inside the barn. It wasn't a recording, or battery operated so it sounded weird. He used to be scared of that sound.

The house we lived in when I was little (we moved from there when I was not quite 4) was an up and down duplex, and we lived on top. There were stairs up from the street door to our front door, which opened halfway along a long hallway that went the length of the house with the rooms all off one side. So, to go from one end of the house to the other, there was one route -- past the front door, which to a toddler was veeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrry tall. And I was absolutely convinced that there was a terrible boogeyman who lived on top of that door and would jump down on me as I passed by, and do many unimaginably terrible things to me. It was OK if an adult was with me, because he was afraid of adults, so he would stay quiet then. But if I was alone, I had to watch very carefully and then run fast so he couldn't catch me.

I don't remember how the subject came up, but I think I was at least in my 30s when I mentioned it, laughing about the silly fears little people have, to my Mum. She was aghast that I had suffered this and never said a word.

Don't ask me where I got this from, but when I was little, my oldest brother had a stuffed animal cougar (not a real stuffed animal) that was probably about the size of a 3 month old cougar... not big, but to a little kid it's huge! Anyway, he put it away in the closet everytime he was finished playing with it. Anytime I had to go into his room, I'd picture that stuffed cougar doll coming out and eating me! I was so scarred, I wouldn't go in his room alone! I refused to do it! But I never told anyone why until after I got over it. Don't know why, but I hated that thing!

My biggest fear was sleeping over at my grandmothers house. I always felt that wolves were waiting for me outside. Could it be because we constantly listened to the Peter and the Wolf album?

I blame it on my cousin, but I am afraid of plants to this day! Ugh! I get the hebiegiebies just thinking about them! I love hiking with my husband but if we get to a part where a plant would have to touch me he has to hold it back. I seriously break into cold sweats from them. I will do some flowers now but I do not go for plants!

Mirrors! I hated mirrors at nighttime - I was convinced that if I had a mirror in my bedroom at night, someone would be able to come thorugh from another world - I don't know why I thought they were a portal. Maybe it was a movie I saw

I used to be scared of the dark and sometimes I still am.
You just never know whats in there!

I remember Worzel Gummidge!!!!! I loved that programme!
My mother almost ran Jon Pertwee over when he was visiting the school where she is the Chairperson of the Board. Ooops.

I'll have to dig deeper, but the first thing I thought of was the show, "Dinosaurs". You know, the one with the baby dinosaur that always said, "I'm the baby!!!"

I'm not sure what made it so scary for me, but I HATED that show and it still creeps me out when it comes on TV.

Whenever I was done with my bath, I had to immediately jump out of the bathtub, because as soon as my mom started draining the water, I was afraid I would go down the drain!

Open closet doors! I was afraid that something was going to come out of the closet and get me. I know it's silly, but I still prefer to have the door closed when I go to bed.

I'm glad someone else feels the same way!!! There was just something super creepy about it. I specifically remember the episode where they dropped old people off a cliff into a tar-pit when they got too old!!! How scary/crazy is that!!?!?!?!
