I was off work yesterday & noticed that Levi has a notch in his ear that I know he never had before. I'm sure it came from playing to ruff (or maybe even fighting) with one of the other two. It makes me a little sad because he tends to let them get away with murder & I worry they are picking on him when I'm not there. The only thing I ever see is that if they are done eating & he is not they walk up to him & he runs away from his bowl. Also, if he is on my lap & one of the other 2 come up to me he jumps down. At any rate my only question is do I need to watch out for anything with his ear? It's not a really bad notch, but should I watch for infection?

Anytime they have a cut or scratch you should watch for infection. If it appears red and swollen, or starts oozing, it's time for the vet.

hi Rang!
Yes, SiSi (Sasha's mama) had a "chipped ear" - and it was a notch she got when the raccoons came too close to the house when Sasha was a little kitten baby. She was fiercely protective and they got into a tussle. She came back to the porch and it was bleeding. By morning it had scabbed over and it healed very fast. That part of the ear - I think you might be referring to towards the top point as opposed to the base?? - heals very fast. But if it's closer to the base, I'd monitor it for any moisture that isn't scabbing at all. If it's a new notch then it should scab within 36 hrs or so, and if it's an old notch and healed, well, I just chalked her's up to battle scars.
it shoudl not interfere with hearing and function.

I think lots of cats tend to get those notches, especially if they're ever outdoors and dealing with other cats. Spot, my 12 (or so) year old, has a couple of notches, plus one tiny hole near the tip that goes straight through. For Halloween, I want to dress him up like a pirate and put a gold ring through it.
I would watch for signs of the area becoming inflammed and feel for heat. Otherwise, I think they heal pretty quickly on their own.

Yes, watch for signs it is inflamed or any heat coming off of the wound.

It' is towards the top of the ear & it's a ver small notch. I'm just a little over protective of him because he's a big Momma's boy.

well, completely understandable! Have no fear hon, it will heal fast and just keep an eye on it. He's very brave!
