I noticed yesterday that I no longer have the option to edit my posts....why is this and how do I change it back?

Thanks,
Leli

Hey darlin' , seems there have been some problems lately, and a decision was made to only allow those with alpha cat status or above to edit their posts. If you need something changed or deleted, you'll have to give one of the mods a buzz.

Yup, Cindy is right. There have recently been a rash of people, mainly newbies, who have edited out the text of their first post making the educational purposes of the threads useless because it no longer makes sense without the original question. So we made editing and deleting an earned priviledge for Alpha Cat and above.

I see....thanks for the info.
One last question....how many posts do I have to have to get alpha cat status (I'm sure I'll make it evetually lol)?

It is a shame the days are so long.. I feel like I have contributed a bit here and there.. and yet I still can not even do the basic editing of my own posts anymore, and I typo a bit.

Does everything have to be Post count & days?! Can't some things be just post counts.. or just days... or one or the other? I realize.. there are some people that would just flood the site with one word posts non stop.. but those seem to be a very select group in my experiences at least and then subject to punishment, banning or something. Although I am a strong advocate of "let the code do it", maybe there is some tweaking still possible somewhere?

Granted.. I am a 'super cat' or whatever it is.. but in name only which although nice to see.. leaves me a bit limited as my time catches up to my actual named status level.

Yes, pretty much everything is in posts and days of membership based on past experience of what works best for this site. It previously was based soley on post count but then the spamming got to be a serious issue to get to the next level, hence the days of membership requirement.

I realize that to some people these rules seem highly unfair, or even strict.

We do not just change rules without good solid reasons, and the larger we grow in membership, and the more traffic coming our way simply brings certain issues to a head because some people like to push the envelope. And in pushing, they create more work for moderators who are here voluntarily and who would like to continue enjoying their time here but suddenly cannot.

There are always reasons behind each rule change. The reasons behind the changes are sometimes not shared with the general membership. There are other forums on the internet with their own set of rules and guidelines as well. The ones that have no guidelines or rules don't last to long, they generally get shot down in flames.

A suggestion for anyone who is anxious about not being able to edit, because they know they always have typos: hit the "preview post" button, instead of the "submit reply" button. You get to look at your post, just as if it had posted, see the errors and anything else that didn't work quite the way you intended, and then you can scroll down to the edit window and fix the errors before posting. Works a treat.

Eh, makes sense I guess. I write very quickly so there will be typos or sentences here or there. I agree it is messed up that someone would re-write or delete a question they had posted, especially after people worked to provide answers, but there are always one or two replies where in hindsight we'd either answer a different way or perhaps remain silent. But anyway...mystery solved.

Oh bummer...I noticed that too. Oh well. I understand the need for implementing the rule though. I guess you'll just have to bear with my typos, as I'm good at catching other's typos but horrible at catching my own. LOL.

bummer, just noticed it too. how about changing this limitation to being registered for 90 days only, not 300 posts?

The promotions are tied to number of posts and days in membership. I can't separate the 2. The only thing I could do would require lesser ranks (i.e. young or adult cat - 20 and 100 posts respectively) to wait 90 days instead of 30 for promotion. I believe that would upset more people, in terms of the other perks they receive upon promotion, like more avatar choices. The solutions to the problem we have been having are limited. It already stands that no member can delete the first post in a thread, because that deletes the entire thread. So, the disgruntled have been editing that first post down to a couple of words, like 'deleted'. As it has been stated, that destroys the entire thread just as much. Although the original poster may not like what he or she has read, the existence of the thread may serve to help others in the future, which is why we want it intact. Established members realize that moreso than brand new people do.

Hey guys, like Fran said, when you get finished typing your post in, just click to preview it (or go advanced, then preview it) and you'll see what it looks like, if its ok, submit it, if not, you can edit it then.
