Beth, wow what a treat! I want to move into the Salon, you know it!

I have this recurring vision of myself living an expatriat life in Paris....on a narrow steet with a flat of dark woods and antique French furniture....I am writing and have lots of lovers. I told this to Eric and he said, "
oh that's really nice, sweetie. Can't you just go to a hotel and talk to the pool boys here in Maple Valley?" .......I did not know we had pool boys in Maple Valley.

This was such a great trip. Which part was your very favorite????

To be honest - before that weekend we'd always stayed outside Paris and taken the train in for the day. We would race around and dash from one place to the other on the Metro and never really enjoyed it that much.

This time, we were determined not to use public transport and we decided on a couple of places to stop at for coffee etc but the rest of it was ad-hoc decisions within a loose plan - like a picnic down by the river which was lovely.

We had a FABULOUS time and so enjoyed a weekend being just a couple rather than parents as well.

Elizabeth is not here right now - she's away from her computer checking out the local hotel pools

You know Elizabeth, our neighbour is a french lady who has moved over here to be near her daughter. She lives in an ordinary modern house like ours, yet when you go inside it is filled with the most beautiful furniture and antiques from her previous apartment in Paris.

It was all spectacular - we had planned it so that each date had a route that would take in highlights we had always wanted to see - so it was a weekend filled with favourites. But I suppose the highlight would be the terracotta Kiss - each time the photo comes up on the screen I'm transfixed. We stood by the case for ages in the Museum. I had carried the desire to see it again from 1994 - 2003. I had seen the marble before and was amazed, I did not even know the terracotta existed (I'm no art buff) and never, ever imagined that the terracotta would be so powerful.

So yes, I guess The Kiss was the highlight.

Oh, I just love the pictures. Euro Disney looks pretty fun. I take pride in our Disneyland here in Southern California. I think it's the smallest of all of the Disney theme parks, but it's the Original.

How far is Euro Disney from Paris? I noticed you said it was really cold at Disney, yet I see people in Paris in shorts and looking totally comfortable.

Oh it's not far at all from the centre of Paris - just on the outskirts. There's a really good rail link from Gare Du Nord (a central station in Paris) and it takes about 25 minutes by train.

You have to forgive my artistic licence with the time scale - the central Paris photos were shot over a beautiful summer weekend in August 2003; whereas the Disney ones were shot last weekend on a bitterly cold, Siberian weather fed February weekend!

I love Disneyland in California - mind you it's been a long time since we were there. We went in 1994 so before they built the additional bit to the park and it was lovely. We stayed in Garden Grove for a few days before driving off to Barstow and the desert.

Now it's my turn to be jealous - I haven't been to Vienna...yet. But I love to travel (you've probably guessed) and we WILL get there!

Have a great time at Movie World.

"...a previous apartment in Paris." Maybe I will be 85 when I can say that!

Really the art was your favorite! This is so cool because what I've studied is the light of Paris. I know they call it the City of Lights, but the natural light is more interesting to me. The color of the skies and clouds and how everything has such a timeless feel to it. I would have the say Le Jardins photos are my favorite of your collection so far. THANK YOU BETH!!

No problem Elizabeth. Oh yes...I loved Les Jardins du Luxembourg - they were just beautiful. But all the things we saw were things we had picked out as *must do* things on our trip, so it was hard to pick a favourite.

The natural light in Paris is no different from what I live with every day - so although I don't take it for granted it's no different that I always see. I love the skies and the clouds though - you just ask my family about me and clouds....they think I'm cuckoo, I'm always going on about them.

For me - the best European light is Mediterranean light - it's simply wonderful, especially mellow September early evening Mediterranean light - all mellow, golden and warm. In Corsica it glows from the Pink Granite mountains and is simply wonderful. And the colour of the mediterranean sea....well see for yourself

That is beautiful, true colour - well worth the 4 hour walk over the hills at the back there to get to it!

And not quite September golden yet - more like late August but lovely nonetheless

Both taken in North western Italy - our little European corner of paradise (as hubby calls it).

Beth, I have a question...Is it hard to get around France if you don't speak French?I've always wanted to go but I must admit I'm a little intimidated to go to a country where I don't speak the language. (I'm not as brave as Fwan...you go girl!!)

No not really - it helps if you know a bit, but in Europe in most places people speak a little English and even if they don't it's perfectly easy to get by (and sometimes really entertaining when you don't).

I've been to Greece - don't speak a word of Greek; when I first went to Italy I didn't speak any Italian either. When I went to Spain to visit the Alhambra (a dream of mine) I did a short course in Spanish on Saturday mornings and that was enough for me to get by.

The second time I went to Italy, I spent 6 weeks tutoring myself at home with a Hugo book - Learn Italian in 3 months. I was amazed how easy it was for me to get by in Italy with that (plus the Italians are lovely and very helpful when you're trying (dismally) to speak their language). In fact, I was so inspired I did a one year University course in Italian and found that the Hugo book had prepared me really, really well.

Don't feel put off - go and experience these places. If you can give yourself just a little preparation before all well and good - but don't let it stop you going if you can't prepare in advance.

My hubby is mathematical/scientific and languages are all greek to him
he still travels and does perfectly well.

Go for it - live the experience, it's fantastic

Oh, I love seeing those pics of Disney in Paris, and Disney Village reminded me so much of Downtown Disney. Love the pictures of the city of Paris....very beautiful, looks like you had a great time.

Thanks for sharing.

Yep Tina - Disney Village is like Downtown Disney only much, much smaller - it's only about the length of Main Street USA (not including the Town Hall Square bit at the end, only the shops).

We did have a great time - thank you.

Wonderful photos, Beth!

Ir looks like you had a fantastic time!

It really reminded me of my visits to Paris! (it was cold when I went too!)
Did you get accosted for portraits in the artist quarter?!

I often think of working there for a bit of money, but then again I could do just the same in St Ives!!

Were your ponchos the Mickey Mouse ones?!!

The ponchos say Disneyland Resort Paris on them - I wish they did have Mickey Mouse on! The kiddies ones were nicer and I could just about fit into those - but I wanted it really long to keep my jeans dry

Yep - Place du Tetre was absolutely teaming with artists - but they didn't accost us. Mind you, some of their work is fantastic. We have a beautiful charcoal and chalk sketch of our son that he had done in Montmartre when he was 12 and it captured him beautifully. He's a bit of a writer and it captured his "serious artist look" just right
