Mystyc got outside the other day for 7 hours when it was below zero. Her toe is now missing fur, and it's swollen, and it has a flap of skin over part of her claw. It looks like her claw is split. My husband will NOT let me take her to a vet. Instead I have to sit here and hope she's okay. I am so mad. SO SO mad. I am fuming right now because I said I would prefer for her to stay inside until her toe heals, but I have no choice because hubby says he's gunna let her out all that he wants. He says he is thinking logically, she was outside 7 hours below zero, and there is NO reason to keep her inside.

He does not want to waste the money
I have no car. We don't have a phone(We have a cell phone, and when he's at work, he's got it with him), and what he says goes. Last night he told me I could take her to the vet today, but since he said he looked at it this morning, he says she's okay.

Her toe has no fur. She isn't limping. IT's not hot to touch. She seems like she is in NO discomfort at all, but I was told by someone I trust that she needs to see a vet either way. He won't even keep her in the house so that I can keep an eye on her. We've kept her in the house before. UGH I AM SO MAD.

Now he says if I really care about her, I need to clean her toe, and put medicine on it. SHe's already shredded my hand, it's bleeding right now and stinging, because she doesn't like being handled. So now he wants me to take her to the bathroom, clean her foot, and medicate it. Sure I wll, but what good with that do us? Off to get shredded somemore.

This is where you stand up and tell him you are going to take this cat to the vet. She needs to be tested, if she was outside long enough to hurt her claw like this there could be other injuries. These types of injuries need a vet's assistance because of all the bacteria that can be introduced into the wound. Tell her you take her now, or face the possibility that a larger vet bill will loom in the future not to mention the pain this cat will be in if there is an infection setting in

I hope she's Okay!!! and I hope your hubby comes around. Maybe you should put him outside for 7 hours and see how he feels about it?

Sorry but if it were me, I'd also stand up to my husband. Especially because Hissy's right - if you wait, it could mean more damage which could mean a larger vet vill.

Good luck!

I locked myself in the bathroom with her, and got her paw cleaned up a little. He couldn't understand why I was freaking out so bad, and why I was so mad. He did finally come around. He's going to keep her inside, and I am calling the vet. UGH! We already talked about it last night, and he said we should, then he changed his mind. I hate when he gets all stubborn on me, then I have to work to turn his mind back around. Maybe it's for the argument. He comes from a very intelectual family that loves to debate with each other. I'm calling the vet now, so I will keep you posted.

I hate when I have to rip his pants off, and put them on and say 'NOW SEE HERE!!' We have 2 roomies, my lilbro, and his lilbro, and they have to put up with us. UGH! Thanks for letting me vent, and thankyou all for seeing it my way... the VET!!!

OH YEAH... I was so angry, I didn't mention that she got under the house durring those 7 hours, wich was why she didn't run in with us as soon as we got home an hour after she got out. She wasn't in the extremely bitter cold. She was where Myth was the 3 days she was out durring our 4 day snow storm. It did hit below zero then also. But even if she was safe, and not as cold as it was outside, I still worry. I still think that was way to cold, and too long for her to be outside!! !!!!!

I posted at the same time as you

Not with things relating to Dori, but in other areas, I try to work a deal with him. For example, you could give up something extra for you to help make up the $ spent at the vet.
Let us know what the vet says.

Just got off the phone with my vet. She told me to keep her inside, hot soak it, and put some neosporin on it. If she starts messing with it, limping, it gets red, or looks any more swollen. Call her immediately. Shade has an appointment on Wed to get fixed, so I can take her in then if it isn't looking better. If it looks any worse, call her. I've already soaked it, before I called her. She's sleeping now. I watched her after I soaked it, and she cleaned it. Then she put that paw down, and cleaned the other one. She didn't baby it or anything. I'm going to look at it as often as I can without bugging her too much. Hubby thinks she just got the fur ripped off.

When Myth was about Shade's age, she got her front leg caught in some fishing line. It was a loop, sticking out of a box. She got her front leg in it, and somehow twisted, or wraped it, so she was stuck. He tried and tried to get ahold of her, and get it off of her, but he couldn't. She was mad, hissing, scratching, biting. I was working across the street at a pet store, so he called me and asked me to come home asap. By the time I got across the street, she wasn't stuck anymore. She'd finally got loose, but he coudln't find her. I found her, coaxed her out, and she'd pretty much shaved her front leg clean with the line. No other damage. I made him take her to the vet. She had no injuries at all. Just bald. At that time money was tighter then it is now, but it really hurt us, we ended up packing up and moving back home. But... I think that's why he second thought his decision. Mystyc isn't Myth. We didn't see Mystyc get caught on anything. We don't know that is what happened. My vet knows what's up now. I explained that she was outside that whole time, and she asked me what color the skin was. How the skin looked. How she acted when/if I touched it. If she was babying it, stuff like that. So... I feel better now.

Oh... and what looked like the claw split, was like a claw shed. Do the claws shed? The claw is normal. I did look at it better when I cleaned it.

I think the claws do "shed". Doris nails do that as well.

You SHOULD kill someone. Your husband.

Neglect of animals soon grows to abuse, and pretty promptly thereafter, it extends to abuse of human companions. I echo the voice of those who have said you STAND UP to your husband and MAKE GOOD on your PROMISE to TAKE CARE of your cat. If you don't stand up to him, you're soon as guilty of neglect and abuse of the poor animal as is he.

You are absolutely right. The vet was already called, all is good now. He gets stubborn sometimes. He's one of those 'I grew up with cats, they never saw a vet, spent time outside, and were always okay.' He didn't live where we live. He didn't grow up in the times we are now, and he is not ME! I have to butt heads with him sometimes, it just gets annoying.

It really made me mad this morning. I was just getting out of bed. I had just said I wanted to look at her toe. He told me that he already did, and it looked fine. I said I wanted to see how it looked today, since I saw it yesterday. He then left the room, and let her out! Right as I was in the bathroom, he let her out. I did not get to look at her toe until she came back in, and I was FUMING. He irritated me. She's MY cat. He does NOT clean her potty box, or anything. He will feed and water them. I figure since I do almost all the work for them, their health is MY responsibility. With it being my responsibility, if I ask him if we have enough in the bank, and he says yes, that means we WILL take her to the vet. Not me asking 'permission'. We do have the money, he just thinks I am over reacting. Then not following my wishes to keeping her inside so I can keep an eye on her toe. I can't just call her in if I want to check it at any given time if she's outside. ... MEN!!! (well... MY MAN!!!!!) The vet has been called. So I feel better. I got my way.

BTW... that rant wasn't directed to anyone here. I was just letting off more steam. It was actually directed towards my hubby.

Oh yeah, and thankyou all for agreeing with me. It makes it easier sometimes to stand my ground when I know that others feel the same as I do. I sometimes wonder if other people are right, that I take my girls' health too seriously.

He even told me this morning that he was glad we didn't have kids, cuz we'd spend every day at the vet.

It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one in the world who takes things seriously.

Umm, I hope you meant the pediatrician. If not, I am glad you don't have kids, too!

That whole situation would freak me out TONS because I saw a story (I think it was here in GA) where a kitty was outside in the freezing cold and her paws froze to the super-cold pavement in a parking lot. She had to be thawed off to save her
and she had frostbite on her paws which looked like bare/naked paws but darker. Those kind of stories make me REALLY worried about my kitty outside in the cold. So there's a story to tell your husband if he doesnt understand your concern...if I had the link still I would post it, I'll looks around to see if I still have it.

BEST OF LUCK! Hope your kitty's wounds heal quickly (as well as your worry).
