Hi

I`m new to this site and in desperate need of some advice.

My husband and I took in a 17 year old cat in Jan last year as her owner had died and no one else would take her. She is adorable and we love her to bits.

I had to take her to the vets this morning as she hasn`t bee nwell for a couple of days, she was being sick and just wasn`t herself. He said he could feel a growth in her abdomin and it said that it didn`t feel very nice and gave us 3 options.

1) We could have her put to sleep

2)We could put her on steriods to make her more comfortable but it wouldn`t cure thingss.

3) He could operate and see what the growth is and if its untreatable he would put her to sleep, whilststill under.

We have ruled out no. 1 as we don`t just want to have her put to sleep without knowing whether it could be removed etc.

We have also ruled out no.2 because we are worried about her quality of life.

So we are going for no.3 and the operation is being done tomorrow at 10.30am

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything siimilar and had a positive outcome, as we are hoping that its just a growth that can be removed, but we don`t want to get our hopes up.

She seems fine in herself now but she has had a steriod injection today so we are thinking thats why she has perked up.

Any advice/ info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Your cat is in the double digit age-wise. Masses in the abdomen could be anything from something swallowed like hairballs that didn't pass through all the way to the other extreme cancer. The cat's internal system is aging just like the outside and over time loses the ability to function on a normal basis.

I will say a prayer that this mass is not something life-threatening-

We had a cat Rosie (14 years old), who was more an outside cat than inside. She be gone for days at a time. So it took a while for us to notice that she was getting to thin. By the time we got her to the vet, she had a mass that had grew to encompass all of her organs so there was no choice but to put her down

I do hope you have caught it earily enough in your kitty so that it can be removed successfully.

Sending good vibes your kitty way.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi, welcome to TCS. I'm so sorry your kitty has not been well, this must be so difficult for you. I pray that this is something that is easily treatable. Please do keep us updated how the surgery goes and how she is feeling.

Hi and Welcome!!

Sorry to hear about your kitty. I haven't had experience with large masses, although my cat Pickles has a mass in his stomach, its big enough that we can feel it. I was told that it could just be a fatty mass (not sure what that is). It didn't bother him when we touched it so we pretty much have left it alone. (We also left it alone due to the fact he has squamous cell carcinoma, which is a fast moving cancer, he had it in his ear in October, and they removed his ear canal. We are hoping that they got it all but they can't be sure. But Thankfully he has been normal since finding this out and since his operation). Unfortunately there is no cure for the cancer he has so we just have to love him for as long as he is here, that is another reason we decided not to put him through more surgery to find out what the lump was, and the vet kind of agreed she said she would be more concerned if he jumped or was chewing at it, and where it didn't seem to bother him we could just leave it alone. Sorry to ramble hope yours turns out to be nothing. I will be praying for you and your kitty. Let us know how everything turns out. Take Care.

Hi

Thanks for your relpies and welcomes.

We are really confused this morning as she seems fine and is purring ,rolling over, pawing at us if we`re not staring straight at her and she is starving but we can`t feed her because of the op. I hate having to do this.

I really hope to god its just a simple growth that could be removed or a hairball, she is amn indoor cat so doesn`t go out to eat grass to bring up hairballs like all my other cats have done.

I`ll keep you updated. Just wish I had found this forum earlier.

how did the surgery go for your kitty?  I am going through the same thing with our furry friend right now.  I fear it may not be good if they operate, and we will not see him wake up, or then we think there may be a chance. if the mass had spread into his body, we feel the best is to keep him comfortable and let him do what he wants, but we don't know unless they operate.

This thread  is ten years old, so you may not see any response.

I'm sorry to hear your own little one has a mass.  Why not open up a new thread and tell us everything you have learned so far about it and see if any current members have some experiences they can share with you.  I know we have members who have cats who've survived Lymphoma and the like, and blockages, etc., but not sure what your furbaby's issues might be, exactly.  (I'm guessing that's the issue....you're not quite sure either, without surgery
).
