On Friday (last week), the mail lady dropped off our mail, and I had opened the door maybe a minute later to walk 4 steps to the mailbox, and Watson ran outside and ran to the side of the house into the other yard and started to bark at her. I grabbed him and apologized to her. Well, Monday came...no mail, Tuesday...no mail, Wednesday...no mail. Called the post office and the man that answered said he would talk to her. Apparently she is afraid of Watson and thinks he can open the door with his paws and attack her
Might I add, my duplex neighbor that is 2 feet away from us, gets his mail.
What do you think about this?

I think that's ridiculous! Open the door with his paw? Puh-leez.

I'd be ticked... I'm sure the postman (lady?) has come across other dogs before, does she not deliver their mail either?

On a side note, my mailman here has become a slacker and has started coming at 7pm instead of 1pm like he used to. Geez.

Has anyone else come and investigated this? Can they do an investigation? Aren't postofficer workers trained about pets? If not they should. I here you on the guy being a slacker, our mail used to come at 3 now it comes anywhere from 6-8, I usually pick it up the next day since I am in an apt. complex and we have community mailboxes in the back of the complex.

I usually do that when I'm just expecting bills, but now I'm expecting a package that got mailed about a week ago - and any packages get delivered straight to the office... and if the office closes at 5 and the postman doesn't get here til 7...

I was being very sarcastic about that. His exact response was "she is afraid of the dog and that he might be out". If she thinks that why doesn't she just stop delievery all together. It makes NO SENSE to deliver next door--and when I say next door--I mean about 6 steps from the mailbox! OMG! I am so furious about this--that's the government for you. My MIL sent us a check about a week ago, should have gotten here the next day--I am just livid. Is there somewhere I can complain about this or is this just another one of those stupid loss causes?

If you have the time, I would GO to the post office your mail comes out of and ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. They cannot refuse to deliver your mail--it's not like Watson bit her or anything. Point out that your very near neighbor is still receiving his mail. I'd be polite but firm--you are a taxpayer and you are entitled to this service.

Thank you Stefanie--I appreciate your advice. I will do just that but only after I have calmed down. It seems lately that I have had nothing but problems with different "companies" and such. And to think that my dear sweet Watson scared her--that's so unlike him to even want to hurt anyone. Maybe if she wouldn't have thrown mail at him while he barked at her, he wouldn't have gotten so mad

She threw mail at Watson????!!! What?!! What does she expect? I think if my Postman threw mail at me then I would bite him (not that Watson did, obviously more sensible than me!)

I would also point out that fact when you speak to them too, as that is agrivating an animal that wouldn't harm anyone! A bark is one thing....

I can't believe she stopped delivering to you!! GRRRRR!!

I think that there is definitely a problem getting decent postal staff! My postman leaves parcels in the street!! I live in Central Manchester (well, nearer to the 'rougher' areas) and he just leaves it out??!! I once found a massive Amazon package of books for one of the people in the block and he had left it outside in the rain....??

Sorry to hear about your horror stories. I on the other hand, have the postman from dreamland. He is the best. Pets the kitties when they are out on the porch(enclosed but he has to put the mail in thru the slot and Twig loves to say hi!) Keeps all junk mail out of our house and sends it back, I talked to him the awhile back about things that are coming to the house in my EX's name(how that happened I have NO idea) and now he is keeping then for me and sending them back to their places of origin(spam mail). I love my postman! He's the greatest! I haven't seen him in awhile (he delivers when I'm snoring! LOL! but I know I'll see him when I go back to work and then I can give him my belated xmas gift!)

If someone threw mail at my animals and I saw it, holy sh** they'd never hear the end of it! I promise you that! and then their supervisor wouldn't hear the end of it!!! Go get them and get your mail back! Stupid mail carrier, your dog doesn't look mean at all to me.

SHE THREW MAIL AT THE DOG??????? Whoa. No two ways about it, that warrants a serious complaint. In your situation, I might even consider typing a letter up and bringing it with me when I went to speak to the supervisor.

On the one hand, I can sympathize with mail carriers, who actually do get bitten by dogs pretty frequently.

On the other hand, it sounds like your particular mail carrier is just being vindictive - it's ridiculous that she'll deliver mail to your neighbor a few feet away, but not to you!
If she genuinely feared your dog, she would be avoiding the area. I got a notice at my apartment once that no mail would be delivered until my loose dogs were restrained - I didn't own any dogs, and neither did my neighbors!
A call to the post office straightened things out.

If you call the post office & calmly explain exactly what happened (including the mail throwing, your apology, and the fact that she's delivering to your neighbor a few feet away but not to you), and promise to keep your dog restrained, hopefully she should have to resume delivery.

Thanks so much everyone!

Yes, she threw mail at him and that's when he became a little more violent, meaning his hair on his back stood up and he kept barking at her. I did apologize and she even did too, which was strange...I guess she knew she upset him. We'll just see what happens when I get home from work. She didn't come by when I was home at lunch...so we'll see

I work for customer service for the post office, and that is not procedure. They are supposed to issue a "dog letter" apprising you of the situation and allowing you to respond. They are not supposed to hold your mail without an explanation. They can with hold service for an entire area if there is one person's dog running loose. They are not supposed to stop service for just one person because their dog might get out, especially if the door is locked in your absence. Call 1-800-ASK-USPS, and ask to document a complaint, and get the number to the local Postmaster.
We are getting so many complaints about carriers doing stupid things like this, it is ridiculous! I cannot imagine where they find these people!

Oh that's appauling! Especially that she threw mail at him, that REALLY gets me fuming. I think I'd find a few things to throw at her.

She definitely shouldn't have thrown the mail at your dog! That is really wrong.

She could be really frightened of dogs though and that is why she is reacting this way?? Probably the wrong profession to be in though if she is

I hope you get things sorted out soon!!
