Ok so my week wasn't looking so hot...my computer crashed Monday (hence my abscence from TCS), our television broke Tuesday (we've only had it since April), BUT....on wednesday I found a house I absolutely love and I am planning to go sign a contract this weekend!!

I have been in this low-income program through our county since October (designed for community workers such as teachers, police, fire, etc...) and we are able to purchase brand new homes for a fraction of the market value. Its pretty hard to find these homes once you're in the program cause they go so quick, but I got my hands on one!!!

The irony of it all is that on our drive to visit the development, we were trying to locate the model home and my boyfriend goes, "hey look those houses are on Beryl Terrace!". The lot I'd be buying is one of the homes on Beryl Terrace. Is that meant to be or what?

Sorry for the novel about my week, I was just so excited and had to share with someone!

Yay!
I'm glad some good news came out of your not so great week! Seeing as how my car died today and I had a cold all week, would you mind sharing some of that luck?

Keep us updated on what happens with the house!

Thanks for all your replies. I just went in and signed my contract today. Settlement won't be until June (the house will be brand new, right now all that's there is a pile of dirt). But I am so excited about having a place of my very own come this summer.

Yay for signing! Just think - you have all of these next 6 months to save up to buy fun things for your new house! How fun - can I help?

Oh Beryl, this is such great news and how happy I am for you. Of all people you are such a great teacher to your students and mom to your little Ebony and I just smile at the opportunity she'll have for her very first new home with you to scent and play in. Congrats. Take photos! Yeah! Of the dirt pile~~!

Congratulations. Bet you can't wait til June. It's great that you have a programme for community workers. My son is a teacher and it would take all his income just to afford the payments on a house - he's just not in a position to buy one yet.

Elizabeth is sooo right. We have photos of our home from when it was a piece of muddy field, right through the building stage to now - 20 years later. It's amazing to see how it's transformed and matured over the years. Make sure you take photos!!!

I was lucky to find out about this program so early in my career...next year i would not qualify for the program because I'd be making to much money. I live in the fastest growing county in the US, so real estate is expensive. Market value townhomes don't sell for less than $250,000. Most single family homes sell for upwards of $400,000. I wouldn't be able to afford anything like that on my measley teacher salary.

I plan to go over there and take picture of our 'dirt' this week. I am also going to take a picture of one of our neighbors houses so ya'll can see the finished product. I'll post those asap!

Thanks again for all your congratulations.

Yep - same as the kind of prices we have to pay in our area. Doesn't give much hope for those starting out does it?

our dirt pile

a house that looks similar to what ours will look like when finished

it'll be fun to document the progress of the house as its being built. Thanks for looking!
