Well, yes, the belt theft was adorable.

I solved that problem...as Zannie'sMom said above, I was just not going to take it away from her. So I went and bought a new robe.

I still haven't resolved the issue of bridge, but I'm thinking hard about it. The only way a ramp would work is to set it at the foot of the bed; but again, I'm not sure she wants to go up without seeing who and what is there. I've got to figure some sort of bridge between the rack and the bed, and even then I'm not sure she'd use it.

She was out and about last night, and I expect it to be the same tonight. I wonder if she only comes on there when I'm in bed, because then she knows where I am, and feels safer that way? Like she sees me, and can explore while keeping an eye on me or something. I dunno, I just haven't seen her on the rack when I wasn't in the room, like she is with the rocker and the condo.

Sometimes it seems like they see you as a different person in bed. My Buddy first would come see me on the bed but not anywhere else. Now that he is well tamed, he loves me anywhere. But maybe she thinks you are less threatening lying down. Becky

Colleen, that is a great site. How cool! There are a few things I want from there...but I dunno if the ramps will work for Pengy. I have to get out the measuring tape and see.

Thanks for the link!

Becky, I think she does indeed find me less threatening when I'm in bed...but I don't know why. Hey, I don't question these things, I just enjoy them...

Moving right along, I see...
Cute little thief! I hope you find a way of giving her a safe route from the rack to the bed. Sounds as if that's the key to getting her on the bed. Nice progress, Michele.

Thanks, Sam. I like posting that something new has happened, big or small. Makes me realize progress is being made, however slight it is. And that's a good thing!

Fran, you're right. It would have to be a route she trusted...and one that was relatively secure. I know she wants to experience the bed - you can see the curiosity in her eyes when the others are up there.

I just went into the bedroom for something and realized, after I had entered the room, that she was on the floor in front of the rocker. This is a very exposed spot, and I don't think I've seen her there exactly before. I hopped slowly onto the bed, off the other side (instead of going around and crossing in front of her), got the book from the bookshelf, and sat on the bed for a few minutes. Of course I sat in a place I could surruptitiously watch...

Simon, bless his kitten heart, went right up to her, touched noses, and then sat back and coo'd at her. I kid you not, he coo'd. A humming meow, I guess would be a good way to describe it. And she stretched her neck out to him and intiated nose touching with him. I nearly fell over. Of course, Simon decided that meant he should play with Pengy, and sat back, crouching and cooing some more. Like "hey, let's play now!" She declined, stood up and stretched, and then casually walked back behind the rocker.

I know she interacts with the others; I know she has no fear of Pie at all, and she likes Simon. I just have not witnessed - until just now - such a calm, nice exchange.

Made me smile.

I'm still noodling the route from the rack to the bed. I'll come up with something, I'm sure...after all, this was a cat who hated traps, and I figured a way around that, too. I should probably go to the hardware store and see what I can rig up.

Just thought I'd let you all know it's not just her making strides with me, she's making strides with the other cats.

I suppose that if it is by a wall you could buy shelf brackets and short shelf segments and make her some steps attatched to the wall. But to give her some traction on them you would need to staple or hot glue carpet or something to them. Becky

Aw what a sweet moment between Pengy and Simon! I would've loved to see it! I'm glad your sweet boy is being so welcoming to her, and that she's being more open to everything!

Good luck with your "project" to help her explore the bed, I know you'll come up with something!

Simon is a dear. Last night, he got on the top level of the rack while Pengy was on the middle, and he leaned over and she leaned up and they touched noses. Melted my heart.

BUT!

O.K., so I'm late making dinner. I'm in the kitchen, thumping around, making all sorts of noise, opening and shutting the oven. I wipe my hands and decide to go to the other room via the hallway. It wasn't a conscious decision, just the way I was going. I got two steps into the hallway from the kitchen, and realized Pengy was sitting in the doorway of the bedroom and the hallway. She came up a bit, I wheeled on my feet and got back into the kitchen, and just now peeked out and she's hanging in the doorway.

This has happened before, but it's very very rare, very unusual. Especially since I've been banging pots and pans around. I think this is really interesting, especially because the times she's done it before were not together with her new playspot - the rack.

And no, I still haven't figured out quite how to bridge the gap...but I am noodling it.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Michele,

You should get in touch with some "techie" friends and have them rig up a "PengyCam" so we can all be there on the day when you are in the front room reading, or watching TV and she just strolls by.

At the kitty's beck and call
Hi Michele

I've been away for a while and can't believe what Pengy's been doing whilst I've been gone! My she's certainly come on leaps and bounds.

Simon is such a lovely boy
- it looks like he and Pengy are going to bond really well.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that she's brave enough to investigate the bed before long. At this rate, there won't be any room in bed for you - you'll have all the kitties in comfort and you in the kitty condo!

Last time I was online you were feeling under the weather - hope you're feeling better now
