I haven't had any problems with her. As I said, she's the most loving out of my four cats. She is really laid back and doesn't fight with the other cats or my fosters. I don't know if there are any concerns healthwise or anything, but so far all her vet checks have been fine.

The more I'm thinking about it, the more I think I'd like to rescue a Ragdoll or Ragdoll mix from a shelter. Yes, I am concerned about any health problems that might come up as a result of him being a mix... I'll do more research. Does anyone else know?

I don't think there would be any health problems specifically associated with cat being a mix. If anything, presumably cat should be healthier because you increase it's gene pool.
But the problem is, without papers, your cat might not be a ragdoll at all.
How would you know there is ragdoll in the mix? In a shelter, they likely would assign breed because cat might look like a ceirtain breed, not because this cat belongs to this breed, unless this cat has papers. And I presume most cats in shelters do not have papers.

This is true... obviously I don't want a Ragdoll to show or anything, just for it's personality and behavior... perhaps by meeting the Ragdoll you could get an idea of what it's like?

I'm just saying, $500+ is a great deal of money for me to be spending on a cat... and while I would love to get a Ragdoll from a breeder, I'm not so sure I can afford it. Therefore, I figure adopting a Ragdoll/Raggie mix from a shelter isn't a bad option... right?

Papers really don't mean much if you don't show your cats.
I didn't even register my last persian yet because -what's the difference?
So, I think it's fine if you just get a Ragdoll looking cat.
You might even tell other people you got a Ragdoll-most would not know the difference.

I think the only importance of papers for someone who isn't planning on showing a cat is to know that you do have a Ragdoll... and maybe to know the lineage?

I'll still look around.. but finding a Ragdoll breeder near San Antonio is getting frustrating!!

Yes, of course, when you get Ragdoll with papers you know you are actually getting in Ragdoll. Anything you get in a shelter or rescue is unlikely to be a Ragdoll, because it's a somewhat rare breed, so there unlikely to be many of these running around.
But you might get a Ragdolly looking cat that will be freindly.

Some breeders will meet you halfway to deliver the kitten.
Of course, you are unlikely to come and visit them to see the operation if they live far away.
When I was looking for a Ragdoll, I got bad luck too, I didn't like any of the breeders, that's how I ended up with a persian. I must say my persian is not a freindliest cat around, though. But he is very good looking. The second persian was pretty freindly for a couple of days, but then he got sick (it wasn't the breeders fault, he had a bad reaction to something, I think). So, now he is no longer freindly because he thinks I am very mean for medicating him.

So I guess I have to get a Ragdoll next.

Oh that's right, we were talking about your persian on the long lost Ragdoll thread!

We can have a Ragdoll search together!

I've been trying to find a breeder near you, but haven't found one yet. I've found a few around Houston that are expecting litters Spring of next year. One of the catteries has a female ragdoll that looks like my kitten Astro. I always assumed he was a DSH with some siamese in him. What do you guys think? The purebred ragdoll is the top pic.

I do think they look remarkably similar! Does Astro have soft Ragdoll feeling fur?

Which Houston breeders did you find? Because I was thinking I might just have to go that far away (my parents live in Houston) and if there are breeders expecting a litter in Spring, then that would be great timing.

Astro is really soft too. Maybe he's a ragdoll/siamese mix too. Who knows! He looks like a seal lynx point. My vet even said he looks like DSH, but that's what he said about Starla and look at her.

Here's a few links.

If you want, I could go check them out sometime. None of them are very far from me. You wouldn't want to drive three or four hours and the place be a dump or something.

Thanks for the links, I remember seeing them before... might have emailed one or two of them and not gotten a reply.

And yeah, if you want to go check them out, that would work out great for both of us - I'd know what kind of place it was before hand, and you'd get to play with Ragdolls...

I'll email these breeders and then I'll PM you when I hear back from them.

Thanks!

Actually, I've emailed them... they've just never emailed me back. Which ones did you hear from?

I haven't emailed any of them yet. Just looked at their sites. I'll email them sometime in the next couple of days and see if I get a reply.

Let me know because I've just now emailed the last one who I hadn't before. If I don't hear back from any of them I'll be a bit frustrated!

My friend got a Ragdoll for their family from a reputable breeder here in Canada. The cat does not shed a lot but it is a very shy, timid cat. It bonded with their daughter but nobody else. He's not even very friendly with my friend. Whenever I've gone over he'll run away as soon as you take one step toward him. He's beautiful but I would want a cat I can heap lots of lovin' on.

Starla will love on anybody. She even lets my daughter play with her. (She hasn't quite mastered the difference between petting and patting too hard) She's the only cat that will sit with Aubrey and let her give her hugs and kisses.
