I thought I'd try to spice up this place a bit & start a fun thread of giving helpful tips that you've learned along the way. It could be of anything! You never know if someone else in search of a new way to do something or a new idea.

Here's mine....

If you're skin is dry and flakey, try soaping up with a good lathering soap and sugar! Just mix enough sugar in the lather to make a paste & rub on to the dry patches. Wash off & your skin will be SOOO soft! I use this on my face, elbows, knees & ankles. No need to buy expensive exfoliants when you've got it all right in your home!

Ok...there you've got mine, so...

What's your trick of the trade?

Mine is about computer monitor care. I dust my monitor off with a Bounce dryer sheet. It keeps the dust away a lot longer than just a normal cloth would.

Ohh Hissy that's a good one! I use the dryer sheets on my horse too, they actually help to repel flies!

My fun tip is for Easter. Instead of buying color-dye kits for the eggs, save your old onion skins and old pantyhose. When easter comes near, boil all the onions in a big skillet until the water has obsorbed the dye. Then go out and collect at least 12 different and unusual leaves from different plants and flowers. Take the pantyhose and cut them into 2 inch by 2 inch squares. Put a plant petal or leaf in each panyhose square and an egg over the leaf. Twist the panyhose over the leaf and egg and tie with string. Once you have 12 eggs or so, dip them into the onion water-boil and boil for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes, cut the string and remove hose-leaf and you'll have a pretty orange easter egg. YOu can also use canned beats for a purpleish color and the tops of carrots for a green color I believe.

Yes, just a can of regular old Coke. It won't stain colors or hurt anything. I though t it was silly until it got almond oil out of my burgundy scrubs. Now I use it all the time.

Mine is about OPENING a can of Coke, or any other carbonated drink. If you tap on the top (not too hard, but hard enough to make a "clack clack" sound) the drink won't spew when you open it; the tapping gets the pressure down. It doesn't make it flat, it just makes it not spray everywhere when you open it.

P.S. -- I told a friend about this and he didn't believe me, so I shook a can of Coke up real good, tapped it for like a minute, and it didn't do anything when I opened it.

Ok, you're all going to think I"m crazy, but...

Cabbage leaves help with swelling. If you have a swollen wrist or ankle or whatever, just pop some green cabbage leaves into the freezer to make them cold quickly (not frozen!) then put them on the swollen area and wrap them loosely with a bandage or a sock or something. The coolness relieves the pain, and for some odd reason, the cabbage reduces swelling.

The most amazing relieve is with breast engorgement. I have pictures of me and my HUGE breasts covered with cabbage leaves after my daughter was born and believe me, it was a relief!
Just stuff them in your braw and go about your business. My daughter never breastfed (she eats through a tube in her tummy) but I pumped my breasts for a year and fed it to her through the tube and I was often suffering from engorgment. Cabbage saved me!

If u get candle wax on the carpet by mistake, get a plain paper towel, put it over the wax area, get your iron out and press the hot iron on the wax thru the towel and the towel will absorb the wax. U will have to do this several times (replace the used paper towel after the paper towel has absorbed the wax with a fresh paper towel).

You won't see any wax or color on the carpet after doing this!

I use this on open leg wounds on horses and also dogs. But honey- not the kind that you buy in the store, but the natural stuff straight from beekeepers, has healing properties to wounds. Just spread it on, and again, NOT the stuff you buy in the store, not even the organic honey. You want to get this before it is processed. But it draws out infection and heals wounds rather quickly.

Tea bags (regular "black" tea, like orange pekoe or darjeeling) are great for stopping bleeding, for example after wisdom tooth extraction. The tannic acid stems the flow of blood.

Does anyone have any hints for sunburn?? Festival opened this weekend and I now have a bodice burn. (For those of you who aren't sure what I am talking about, picture a woman wearing a tight corset.) I've tried chemical sprays, I just felt sticky. I tried my own trick of kaopectate, its a little better but still tender. And beat red!

This weekend, I'm wearing a shawl!

For sunburn use a paste of water and baking soda and spread it thinly on the skin. Let it dry on there. Not pretty, but it feels much better and it will heal it, too, so that the burn doesn't last as long.

Also use honey (REAL honey) for burns, but not for sunburns. Even if you burn your tongue, putting a glob of regular honey from the store will help. Just keep a big glob on there and let it dissolve.

My mother-in-law suggested buttermilk one time when I was burnt so badly I looked like a lobster, and it worked like a dream.

Oh no sweets! Love those bodice burns! I used to manage a garland booth at the large So. Cal. RenFaire booth in my *cough* younger days. In fact, last week I was reminiscing about how crazy I was at the after hours parties *cough*...Anyhow, on to those sunburns!

Noxzema works wonders. Slather it on and it is nice and cool and tingly. And if you don't have that, aloe vera gel works OK, just without the nice tingle. Good luck!

Di Ma You are NOT crazy. Cabbage leaves have been used forever!!! When the first smallpox vaccine was "invented" from old smallpox wounds injected into another person the injected sited was wrapped in cabbage leaves! This helped heal the wound!!!

Not really a home remedy...but the BEST thing for any burn is Silverdene creme...though I'm sure it's only RX...could be wrong. It's used on burn units...great stuff! Aloe...straight from the plant works well, but call your doc for the silverdene, maybe you can get a phone RX.
