Can anyone recommend a good, economical carpet cleaner or steam cleaner? I'd rent the Rug Doctor, but figure I can buy one. Rug Doctor costs $19.99 a day, plus you have to buy the cleaners and stuff to put into it. I dont need a high end one either... just something that gets the job done.

Movin' on up!
We have a Bissell that cost about $80. Naturally, we have to pre-spot but it works very well and the solution isn't very expensive. In between shampoos, I use some stuff, from the auto parts store, to clean up "cat spots". WHY can't they hock up the hairballs in the bathroom or kitchen?

I have a Bissell "Little Green Machine" cleaner that works well for pet messes and other small area spots.

I love it also.

I thought of the Bissell cleaner! I have a cheap vacuum by them, too, and it sucks up A LOT of hair and junk, but for some reason, now it's spitting out the hair. I thought instead of buying one, having a pro come out, but then you have to move the furniture and put the cats away? So, I figure it's just cheaper in the long run to buy one.

I use this also. I haven't had any pet messes to clean up with it, but it works well for any other everyday spots. My mom bought it for me, so I am not sure of the price.

I have no carpet anymore so I got rid of my carpet cleaner. However, my mom has one of the Hoover cleaners with the rotating brushes and water heating element to keep the water hot as you clean. It costs around $200, but she has had it for a few years now, uses it more than a normal person would and has never had any problems with it.

There's no place like home
I have a full size Bissell that I bought about 15 years ago and it still works great. If you choose to buy one, 2 key things to look for is the suction power (the better the suction the more dirt you will pull out), and the layout of the attachments - mine has bristles on the suction attachment that you can use to scrub the rug.

I inherited my mom's bissell- but only use it for major cleaning-I buy one the the pet stainer removers for the cat's messes, you can try vinegar too. Make sure you don't but the cheap cat food they grocery stores sell (like Meow Mix) as many of them have dyes added to them and that is what stains the carpet the worse. I have hardwood floors, carpet and tile and why do they always pick the carpet to throw up on (or pee on)!!
