Hi there,

i have been reading about all your little fur babies(they all sound adorable!) and I can tell that early morning stirrings are not unusual for them, but how can you get them to ease back a bit?

George starts crying outside the gate every morning at 4:00 am! I have pretty bad allergies so he can not come in our bedroom, but we donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t like to close the door- the air gets stagnant in there and kind of claustrophobic...so we leave the door partially open and have one of those room divider screens up in the hallway. He hates this is always wants to get in, I feel bad that he can not, but I have to have one room that he is not in so when my allergies are bad I can go and breathe. I know he would come in and snuggle with us if he could

Anyhow, every morning at 4:00 he at the gate crying and crying and crying...I try to ignore him, cause I know nothing is wrong with him, but it is hard cause I get up at 4:40- and once he starts crying at 4:00 I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t really sleep for those 40 minutes- and I really need them! I have tried to close the bedroom door a bit, but I can still hear him.

I have started to feed him a bit later at night- 6:00. I usually go to be a 9:00. I play with him at night trying to get him tired, I clean his litter box twice a day...I am not sure what he is looking for, maybe nothing and it is just his natural- and I am an early riser, but i just want those 40 minutes back
Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm going through the same myself at the moment.

When i just had Rosie she used to sleep in the spare room incase the alarm went off if she went downstairs, and when she was a kitten she would wake up crying at about 5.30 a.m., but she's now two years old and has settled a lot.

Now i have an 8 week old kitten as well as Rosie, and while they bonded i slept in the spare bed in Rosies room, but they wake me up around 5.30 a.m. because they chase each other around the room and jump up on the bed!

That was until last night!

Until i feel that their ok to be left alone together, because Rosie can get quite rough when they play, Rosie is in her room at night and Sophie is in mine, but Sophie was jumping all over my face this morning, but i'm able to sleep a lot better

I blame it on the light mornings

Jeepers STILL wakes me up at 5am almost every morning. It's about this time that she gets a visit from one of the neighbourhood cats, he sits on the windowsill and stares in at her, she goes nuts trying to make him back off and wakes me up! I walk downstairs and stare out at him and he ambles up the path and out of sight. I'll have to try and get a picture of him he's beautiful and obviously very well looked after.

I used to have a cat that always woke me up about 10 minutes before the alarm clock went off. And on my days off from work this cat always got anxious because I didn't follow the same morning routine. Cats are creatures of habit and don't like having their routine interupted. IMO, George knows approximately(sp?) what time you get up, so maybe he just thinks it's time for you to start your day.

Try giving your cat a bit of food before bed. Nothing as much as a real meal, but a tip of a teaspoon of wet catfood usually does the trick. When I give Miikka a tip of wet food right before bed she usually sleeps in with me until I decide to get up (anywhere between 6am and 11:30am depending if I am working or have school).
Since you mentioned your cat doesnt sleep with you, I would advise making sure that there is lots for him to do if he decides to wake up early!

Lorie D. -- My Simon does the exact same thing! About 5-10 minutes before my alarm goes off, here he comes! Then on the weekends he will do that but when the alarm doesn't go off he leaves and comes back about 1/2 hour later.

One of mine tended to wake me up around 4:30 every morning, summer or winter. The other one always started begging me to go to bed about 8:00. I'm retired, so my schedule doesn't really matter. So lately I have been going to bed earlier to please Red Cat. Then, since I can't seem to sleep more than four or five hours at a time, I wake the cats up and get up sometimes as early as 2:30 or once even at midnight.
That'll show Purdy! (Of course, I usually get my nap later in the day and they are usually happy to nap with me then, too.)

Hi Shannon. My Louie sounds a bit like your George. Who needs an alarm clock. Louie comes into the bedroom every morning between 5 and 5:30. He talks to us and when we don't respond to him he bats at the mini blinds until I get up and feed him and Vinnie. Every night, time doesn't matter, when I walk in the bedroom he follows me in as if to say okay its time for bed. I have tried feeding him about 6 pm instead of 5 pm but he still wakes us up at his usual hour. After he eats breakfast he wants to play. If I decide to take a nap in the afternoon, all I have to say is come on my boys and they snooze with me.

My Buddie wakes me up every morning at 4:00 to feed him and the rest of the crew. Him and Roger eat than run upstairs and stretch out in my bed so there's no room for me to get back in bed. Brats!

Shannon, Maybe George needs his very own "alarm clock" or at least a diversionary tactic. They sell those timer feeders that you could place just outside your door. Maybe you could time it for say 4:05 just as he's getting started...he can chow down, you can sleep. Just a thought. Here's a link to one, but of course there are plenty others. Good luck!

I would agree with a few others that your cat has learned your morning routine and is simpy trying to tell you it's time to wake up. I think the only reason George is crying is because he cannot physically get to you.

I have a question about your allergies and the room divider screen . If your allergeric to your cat, how does the divider screen help when air is still circulating freely through a partially opened door? I"m just curious. Maybe you need an air purifier?

thanks everyoen for your ideas- iam goign to try them!

MissCharlotte, as for your questions about the screen. I think for me the screen has been the safty net so to speak! Before george came to live with us, we were cat sitting for the family cat over the winter. Since it had been a while since she, ashes was with us i went to get tested and foudn out my allegies to cats in particular was pretty sever, so i started getting shots. We go the divider initially for the downstairs to keep ashes there(although she managed to climb it) and we would not have to close the bedroom doors. As i started to do better with her in the house, when she was not outside we let her upstairs and used the divider to block off the bedrooms, as my husband complained about keeping the doors closed all the time. I did get the ionic breeze filters, and they are great, and now that ashes has gone home and geroge is with us my allergies are so much better, however i was laying on the couch yesterday and forgot to move george's blanket and sure enough later that evening my breathing got a bit shallow...so iam not sure it is just the air or actually coming into contact with his dander/fur that also affects me.

We would love to have him in the bedroom, but for me I guess I need that safty net, beacuse the times I have trouble breathing and coughing so hard my chest hurts i get very scared. If you have any ideas, I woul love to hear them!.

thanks!
shannon
