Kitten With Constant Diarrhea

We adopted a kitten from the local SPCA back in January and she has had diarrhea pretty much ever since. She has been back and forth to the vet and they had diagnosed her with giardia first and then after that was cleared up, coccidia. She has been treated for both and cleared. In the course of all that she was also treated for normal intestinal parasites.

They put her on a prescription diet saying they think she may have kitty IBS. However, the prescription diet has also done nothing to clear up the diarrhea.

We're at a loss for what to do at this point. Her fecal tests are coming up clear and there has been no resolution. It's getting rather frustrating.

Any ideas as to what else it can be or what we can do?

What is in the prescription diet? She may need a grain free food or a different protein. A probiotic could also help.

Hi and thank you for your response.

She was on a grain free food when we found that the giardia had cleared, but she continued with the diarrhea. The vet does not think there was enough coccidia in her stool to cause diarrhea, so she had us remove her from the grain free and put her on their prescription diet which does contain corn gluten meal.

It's Hills Diet I/D.

None at all. She has not had a solid stool since we adopted her.

Hoping @missmimz  can weigh in.  I would personally take her off the Hills and get her on a grain free novel protein food, or even a raw food.  What was used to treat the coccidia?

Ponazuril is what she was treated with for the coccidia.

Not sure I want to feed her raw. I prefer sticking to commercial cat foods.

You can send out for a full pcr diarrhea panel to make sure theirs not any other parasites lurking about that fecal floats don't detect. Then get her on a one protein grain free diet to see if that helps. Your options are pretty much parasites, food allergies, or IBS.

I don't remember all the different mods as she was on three different ones to treat the giardia alone. One was a mix of three before they even saw the giardia in her stool.

I know one of them was panacur. I think the other was metronidazole.

They have mentioned IBS. What is usually the treatment for that?

What one protein grain free diet would you recommend?

A novel protein, like rabbit.

I think it's very unlikely IBS at her age.  Much more likely is an allergy, or that her system was so thrown off by the meds and parasites that she is out of whack.

Would you consider one of the commercial raw foods?  I use Primal or Nature's Instinct.  They are sold in medallion size pieces.  Seriously, seriously reduces any litter box odor too.

I would not consider raw as and this may sound silly, but I would have to feed raw to my dog too and it would get way too expensive.

Where can I get rabbit ingredient food?

Why would you have to feed your dog raw too?  Your cat and dog should not be eating the same food.

Look on Chewy and Amazon, or Petco.  Local pet stores.

They are not eating the same food. I looked at the two raw diets that you suggested and it is more expensive than I originally thought just for the cat.

I will stick with kibble and canned food. Now to find a novel protein.

It sounds like you got the parasites covered with a full round of multiple antiparasitics. I agree with talking peanut, a food allergy or stomach upset from the meds is the most likely cause. You can get a grain free rabbit kibble and wet food on Amazon. Look around and see what fits your price range.

My kitten was the same way and I was starting to lose my mind trying to figure out a fix. What worked for Gizmo was to eliminate poultry/fowl from his diet, as every single chicken or turkey food I fed him was giving him consistent diarrhea. Even the bland diet of boiled chicken! He is able to handle beef, lamb, rabbit, and venison foods now, all grain free and no carrageenan. Hopefully a diet change works for your kitty!

I'd follow this protocol for treating the kitten with s boulardii. I've used it successfully with my own kittens, as have many others. It works, and there's science behind it. Likely your kittens normal gut bacteria is a mess from all the meds, this helps regulate it. Additionally, wet, raw, or homecooked only, Steer clear of kibble.

Doesn't wet food only cause issues with their teeth?
