I have a very specific question.
I recently lost my beloved kitten to FIP. I was in a three cat household, now two.
I know FIP isn't transmittable casually but two days before my kitten passed my three year old received a bite which became infected. We don't know which cat bit him, the sick kitten or the healthy other cat.
Can the mutated virus be spread via a bite? My vet didn't know if it was possible and I can't find any info either way online.
I am really hoping he was bitten by my healthy cat but just in case... should I be worrying?

No; you shouldn't be worrying.  The benign form of the Coronavirus is present in nearly all cats, and hence, they're effectually immune to the FIP mutation.  The current belief is that in nearly all cases, FIP occurs as a new mutation of the benign virus within individual cats, which is why younger animals not yet having been exposed to the Coronavirus are deemed most susceptible.  The disease should be renamed really, as the "I" in "Feline Infectious Peritonitis," is now almost certainly known to be false; the disease is almost certainly a catastrophic mutation of the Coronavirus, and not infectious.

Caveat / disclaimer: this is merely a restating of current medical thought, and isn't intended in any form or fashion to be considered advice; it's offered as uncited information only.

That said, I'm sure that I speak for the whole Forum in rendering our sincere condolences on the loss of your dear Friend.
