My cats mouth was open and his toungue was hanging out so I quickly brought him to the vet and found out he has mouth ulcers underneath his toungue. They gave him a shot of steroids and sent us home with pain meds. I was wondering how long it would be until I see a turn around with him? He wants to eat so bad, but his toungue hurting so bad and being swollen is causing him not to eat.

The steroids and any pain relief your vet gave him should help pretty fast and hopefully see improvements in the next day or two.   Mouse had terrible, infected ulcers on his tongue and around his gums plus tonsillitis when he was younger had had to have a series of about 3 anitbiotic / steroid and pain relief treatments before his system started to get on top of things.  He too had stopped eating which was when I realized something was wrong and took him to the vet.

Mouse has always preferred dry food to wet but prior to his mouth getting painful he would eat both.   When his mouth was very sore he could only manage soft food so it was wet, pate texture food that was easy for him to swallow.  You might have to encourage and help your cat to eat for a day or so, offering from your finger or a spoon if he really doesn't seem interested.

How long is it since you were at the vet?  If he is still not eating and it's more than 24 hours ago I would call the vet to talk with them about it.    I hope you see him improve really soon though, and that your vet has some idea of what the cause might have been.   Mouse's vet eventually came to the conclusion his mouth ulcers were down to an unusual presentation of feline herpes because when his mouth symptoms settled down he started to get watery eyes which showed tiny ulcers on close examination.

I brought him back to the vet the very next day cuz there was no improvement at all with him. We figured out the ulcers are not under his tongue but there's some on each side of the tongue and the tip of the tongue. They gave him antibiotics this time and upped his buprenex.... but he's still not eating on his own yet and it's been 3 days since it all started. He tries SO hard, but it's not working. Been feeding him baby food through a syringe but even that is hard to do, you can tell it's hurts him so much so I don't pressure it. But at least his 105.2 fever is gone and he's 100% back to acting his self, just need to get him to eat!!!

We have a follow up appointment tomorrow with his day vet. Hopefully they can do something more for him. I just want him to be able to eat on his own. mservant mservant

Oh bless, the poor little guy.   I remember all too well how sick Mouse was and it is so hard to watch.   It's great that you got him back to the vet and they are now keeping a close eye on him and also trying different medication.  I'm sure that if they don't see improvement tomorrow they will check and see if a different antibiotic is needed.

Keep up with the syringe and baby food, and give him anything he will take.  I'm sure that once he feels better and can swallow without pain he will pick up really quickly and start to eat his regular food without difficulty.  It is a good sign that he is starting to behave more like his usual self even if he still finds eating hard.

One thing I did find with Mouse was he seemed to associate the food he was eating when his mouth was sore with the pain and afterward he wanted different things that he didn't have the same association with, but he certainly had not difficulty with eating in general - he was right back to being his usual tubby self.  He just doesn't like wet food.  :/  Works well though as he is on a dental diet of dry biscuits / kibble and he loves that.
