Correct amount to feed my kitten/cat

My cat will turn 1 year old on 04302017...she is ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS hungry...i was told by the vet to give her 1/3 cup dry cat food in the morning & 1/3 cup at night....she began to not eat & I thought it was because she wanted more variety so I would give 1/3 cup in the morning & 3 oz canned cat food at night...that was fine for about 2 weeks then she started whining, begging, crying for food....now I give her 1/3 cup dry in the morning & a 5.5 oz can when I get home which she eats all.
Am I feeding her to much/not enough???
Please let me know because I just want her to be happy & healthy!!

since your cat is still a kitten, and i assume still very active, that is definitely not too much. As she gets a little older and slows down a bit, you may want to adjust the amount, depending on the calorie count in the food you give. If she is currently on a high calorie food, You may want to switch to lower calorie food eventually and/or decrease the amount you give. My kitten is 7 months and she generally has a small appetite for her age, but it fluxuates with her growth spurts. She always gets 1/4th of a cup of dry food for the day (a high calorie food) and anywhere from 3-5 ounces of wet depending on how hungry she is- split into 3 servings (calories ranging anywhere from an average amount to high amount per can, depending which brand) And if you decide currently that you want to add more food if she's still really hungry- I would recommend adding more wet instead of dry.

I never have liked restricting food for any cat unless they absolutely can not control themselves and almost never for a kitten. Kittens do a little better with a little starch in their diet. Their high activity level burns it off quickly. When feeding wet food you give them an amount to satisfy their needs. Lets say your kitten is currently 6 pounds, but is expect to be 10 pounds when mature. In this scenario % would feed 5-6oz a day broken into at least 4 feedings. Make sure the canned food is at least 12% protein and 6% fat and that would give you carbs at about 6% (assuming no plant proteins in the ingredients).

If you want to feed a carnivore kibble like the canned food above only dry, then you will need to feed a kibble that is 50% protein and 22% fat and 6% carbs. The best recommendation a can give you is to feed the kibble all the time and feed canned food twice a day, 1.5oz each time. This format allows the kitten to manage their own energy needs and it also frees you up, so that your schedule is not so restricted.

I am guessing no one feeds their cats Purina, friskies, meow mix etc?? A lot of these foods I am seeing on this site I have never seen or heard of before

The brands you mentioned I am sure some people even on here feed, but they are very low quality. They have a lot of fillers and are high in carbohydrates and unnecessary junk. Cats are carnivores and don't need things like corn, soy, wheat, or potatoes. A lot of low quality junk foods also have guar gums and carageenan, which can cause an assortment of digestion issues.

Many people have the opinion that feeding the worst quality wet food is better than feeding the worst quality in dry. Dry food can cause dehydration and later on, issues such as kidney problems, diabetes, obesity to name a few.

I think whiskies and meow mix are terrible foods. I would personally stay away from them.

I would agree with the above statement in so much as Dry foods containing starch in excess of 6% can cause a lower hydration level in cats consuming any diet wet or dry.

Current studies show that when identical diets containing starch are fed, a wet version and a dry version of the same diet: that the wet diet does produce more urine output, however, hydration is essentially the same. When I spoke to my Vet about this she agreed that higher specific gravity is usually caused by lower urine output (less water consumption) and that high specific gravity will concentrate minerals in the urine. She felt that higher specific gravity would increase the odds for the formation of crystals or stones.

RESULTS:

Urine volume was lower in the starch group and fiber group in study 1, whereas no differences were detected among the groups in study 2. Urinary pH and struvite activity product were higher in the starch group in both studies, and the fiber group also had higher struvite activity product in study 2. In both studies, urinary concentrations of HCl-insoluble sediment were higher in the starch group and fiber group. In the fiber group, a net loss of body calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium was detected in study 2.

I personally believe that excess starch/carbs is the reason we see issues in our cats. The wild diet of a cat consists of 4-6% starch and when you go above that level,I believe it messes with there metabolism. Hopefully we will see more studies like the one above, to shed more light on this issue.

I asked my Vet how we could find out the state of hydration in our cats. She said that checking skin elasticity or gum tackiness was only reliable for severally dehydrated cats. She said a better test would be to do a blood and urine panel. You want to check Total Protein and Albumin: if they are in the mid to low range then you have a well hydrated cat from a blood volume point of view. She also felt that doing a urine specific gravity would be a necessary. Low specific gravity (assuming no kidney disease) means that your cat is consuming good levels of moisture, either from drinking or from wet food. Normal specific gravity for a cat is 1.015 - 1.050. My vet prefers specific gravitates of more than 1.015 and less than 1.030 along with lower end of normal Total Protein and Albumin levels.

Most vets perform these tests as a part of the standard annual exam. You could even request a copy of your cat records and see the hydration of your cat over past years. Or better yet, request these tests on your next exam.

I often see guar gum lumped in with carrageenan gum and xantham gum. I think that is like saying that animal and plant protein are the same because they are both proteins.

Guar gum has been extensively studied in both animals and humans and is considered safe and has been shown to have many health benefits. Guar gum has been proven to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and will also increase glucose tolerance. As a bonus, guar gum improves glycemic control, reduces the fasting blood glucose levels and reduces the need for insulin in diabetic patients.

Guar does a lot of good things and I believe it should be considered as a benefit for our feline friends.

@Young Again - Do you have any links that show that guar gum specifically benefits cats? That link you provided is talking about humans. Cats and humans do not respond the same way to many ingredients. Every site I've come across talks about guar gum being a cause of digestive issues in cats with sensitive stomachs/digestive tracts. That said, I consider it the lesser of the 'evil' ingredients in cat food and still feed mine food with it in it, since it doesn't seem to affect too many cats negatively unless they have stomach issues.

Most of the research I did on Guar was done 10 years ago when I started using it. There are a ton of animal and human studies on Guar Gum. From memory many of these studies show crossover between humans and other animals. Mostly what I have looked at lately are the claims that some have made to support the position that guar is somehow bad for cats. Everything they currently quote appears to have been wrongly quoted or misinterpreted. If you have a specific concern related to a specific study, I would be happy to address that study/concern.

Guar Gum is not often used in pet food as it is much more expensive that other gums and is in short supply. The high end human market tends to gobble up most of it.

If you have to feed some dry food, go with something higher quality that the big name heavily marketed brands that are typically found at the supermarket and big box stores. Do you have any chain type pet stores in your area like Petco or PetSmart? Go there for a better selection of dry and canned foods. Even Tractor Supply stores have a good selection of pet foods. Petco and Pet Supplies Plus sell Nature's Variety Instinct which is a good brand. It comes in both dry and canned. The selection of NV at chain stores tends to be limited, though. Other brands you might find at chain pet stores are Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Nutro, and Avoderm among many many others. Independent pet stores often carry the high end brands of foods that are not sold in chain stores. Many people who live in areas with limited or no pet stores just buy their pet's food online from places like Chewy.com, PetFoodDirect.com, OnlyNaturalPet.com and Amazon.

I think some people feed thew new-ish Purina Muse line of food. It's supposed to be better quality than most other Purina foods.

If you live in a fairly urban area, look for independent pet stores for the really high end brands like Weruva and Hounds and Gatos. Many pet food web sites have a store locator that you can use to find a local store. You don't need to feed high end food, though. Whatever good quality brand your cat will eat and you can afford is the best one

Some people like to stick with affordable brands and occasional feed a higher quality canned food brand to keep the cat from getting bored with the same food.

TCS member Young Again would most likely suggest the Young Again brand of dry food but the member is also the owner for that company. The brand is sold only online through the Young Again web site and costs well more than most brands of high quality dry foods sold at independent pet stores. I will not comment on the food as I've never fed it before but if that's something you are interested in feeding and can afford to do so, then you can look at the web site for the product info and ordering information.

Here is another suggestion for you. I might suggest that you choose a kibble that is a carnivore based kibble. That would be at least 50-54% protein and at least 22-28% fat. I personally feel that all all proteins and fats should be animal based. I believe that there are at least three companies that do this. I would recommend that the carnivore kibble be fed free choice, available at all times and that you feed a carnivore canned food twice a day. A good carnivore canned food would have 12% protein and 6% fat, give or take a little. Consistency is better for your cat. I personally believe that 12 hours on dry and then 12 hours on wet is not as good as kibble all the time and wet twice a day.

On cost you basically get what you pay for, animal protein is at least 10 times more expensive than grains. I can tell you that an 8 pound bag of a carnivore kibble will last the average 8 pound cat 110-120 days. The cost works out to about $0.40 a day. Based on experience most grain based foods generally feed out in 55-70 days for an 8 pound bag of food, feeding an 8 pound cat.

There are other foods as well Evo comes to mind and and Epigen 90. I think you will find that we have a great deal of information on our web site. We have done extensive work on crystals and even though our food is a kibble, we never see stones or crystals. We have many clients that suffered a recurrence of crystals until they started using our food and there is no recurrence of crystals once on our food.

I see you like to travel, having a kibble available at all times will help with consistency while you travel and ensure that the person taking care of your cat is less likely to mess up.

Yes, I would avoid kibble such as Meow Mix, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, 9 Lives...there are better choices; there are several high-end brands recommend at this site, but there are mid-priced brands of quality kibble, if you can live with carbohydrates like rice, potato, sweet potato or pea. Think about Canidae, Nutro, Under the Sun, Purina Beyond and Purina Pro Plan True Nature. READ THOSE LABELS!

As for wet canned food; Whole Earth Farms, Natural Value, Pro Plan True Nature, Natural Balance, Purina Beyond. None of these will break the bank. If you want to go whole hog ($$$), then try something like Pure Vita or Solid Gold. They are pricey but usually are less costly than Weruva or Nulo or Merrick, three popular high quality brands. Fancy Feast and Sheba (one of my gal's favorites) are priced less. While they contain no grains their formulas do include MBP. READ THOSE LABELS!

Some people on here recommended Fancy Feast Classic. I still haven't been able to find it anywhere. Is it not sold in Canada? I don't even know what the ingredients are but I thought Fancy Feast was a little on the lower end of the quality food spectrum. ???
