Hi All,

I am new to this site and I have been an avid enthusiast for giving my cats the best food there is available. We Have 3 kitties we got in 2013 that initially started out on Firstmate canned (available in Canada and Western USA) and slowly switched them to raw.

While raw was great for them for 1 year and a bit, we had to switch them back to canned due to the danger of giving them raw as Avian bird flu affected over 250,000 chickens and turkeys in British Columbia in November of 2014 and our supplier was local. Raw was a lot of work, even commercially prepared, as we had to beg our cats to eat it within the 30 minutes before it would go bad.

I have recently learned that even a canned food like weruva often has carbs from potato starch as does the other canned we are giving them, Firstmate. So after doing some research, I saw that the next best thing to giving homemade cooked or raw would be Tiki cat. I was very impressed by: 0 carbs, high protein, good calorie count, free range chicken, no hormones or antibiotics, no BPA cans. I am aware it's more expensive, but know too well that vet bills down the road for CRF and urinary blockage can be sky high. If you have ever had a make cat get crystals, you'll know what I am talking about. There is no doubt in my mind that kidney disease and cats eating potatoes, carrots, peas, tapioca, carrageenan etc. are related.

So has anyone heard of Tiki cat being sold in Canada. I looked online and did see it on Amazon, however, from other forums here I see that Amazon vendors may end up selling cat food that is close expiration date.

Thanks!

Bella

Welcome!

Yes it is! I'm in Ontario and I've seen it at Global Pet Foods and other smaller stores with higher end selections. I don't know if I've ever seen it in another chain store but BC has quite a few individually run "pet boutique" kinds of stores where they may have it too.

Welcome, @BellaLuna777!

I've been increasing the Tiki in our cats' rotation, largely for reasons like yours: no potato, peas, carrageenan, or tapioca. They've been eating the Hawaiian-theme chicken foods for almost a year and now we're adding in some of the Gourmet Carnivore foods, which the cats seem to like even more. The Gourmet Carnivore variety pack (of 12 small cans) is an easy way to test them out, though we don't feed much fish.

Tiki is not cheap but it's hard to find shreds without carby gravy ingredients.

Good luck!

Just wanted to add, while I was browsing flyers I did find that Tiki Cat is advertised on PJs Pets' website (and it's on sale here right now), so it might be worth checking them out too if you have a location nearby.

Thanks, I will see if they have PJ's Pets in Vancouver. I used to live in the GTA and remember Global Pet Foods quite well. They don't seem to carry it at any of the Pet Boutique stores where I live in West Vancouver/North Vancouver, but I'll see if they can get it in.

Yes, I saw the Gourmet Carnivore as well. Might give it a try! Do your Ragdolls like it?

@BellaLuna777: So far, yes, they love all the Gourmet Carnivore flavors they've tried. Especially the ones with liver. The chicken/duck and chicken/turkey Gourmet Carnivore flavors look a lot like the Hawaiian-theme Tiki. BTW, the "chicken and liver" (not to be mistaken for "beef liver and chicken"!) is pretty liquidy with large pieces but they loved it and lapped up every drop very quickly. I'm glad to find some other foods they'll eat: we feed them 50-60% commercial raw food, the rest canned, and the cats have gotten ever pickier about pates. I have another variety pack on the way... we'll see if they still like the foods after another round. If so, I'll order individual cases, I guess, or see if the local store that sells some Tiki is willing to order it for me.

Our cats are Siamese mixes rather than ragdolls... though Edwina, the snowshoe, has markings that are a lot like ragdolls'. At least I think! I'm only just beginning to figure this all out! Are your cats ragdolls? They look very sweet.

Well! There you have it! You could have fooled me! I have a Ragdoll girl and she looks just like your babies. The other two are persians: persian and a chinchilla persian. Thanks for the info. on the Gourmet line as I was curious in trying those out. A lot of money, but well worth it in my opinion.

I wanted to add that I buy Tikicat from Amazon.ca ... By the case (8 x 6oz cans or 12 x 2.8oz cans) .. Free shipping over $25 :) .... When Amazon is sold out of a certain variety I use petonly.ca and scour the Internet for a free shipping coupon

I've driven all around Richmond looking for Tiki Cat so you can definitely rule out my area if you plan to look there. I had one girl tell me that Tiki Cat only makes tuna based foods and I just nodded politely and cried inside. Haha!!

I have only one pet store by me that carries it, Pet Supplies Plus. I purchase online.

The ones they sell here do seem to be mostly tuna/fish based. I noticed that they've come out with a new line recently though, so hopefully that's the other meat varieties.
Round here Global and PetPlanet sell it..

Hi, I don't know if you're still searching for Tiki Cat in the GVA area, but I just wanted to report that I happened upon some last week at Tisol -- specifically the Grandview location.  They mostly had the 2.80 oz size for $1.09 I believe.  A few flavours in the larger size, but I don't remember the cost, as they were not the chicken variety, which is what I was buying.  HTH!

Hi TikiCat lovers,

Just an update to my last post.  I've been buying a month or so supply of Tiki Cat (both chicken varieties) at a time for Bear, and today called Tisol (the only supplier in Vancouver I know of) and they mentioned that they were not only out of stock, but that the entire company had been purchased, so they would no longer be able to carry the brand!  They were bought out by PetValu (people who run Bosley's).  I am bummed.  I noticed that I can still purchase on amazon.ca, but the cost is over 60% more ($20.99 per case of 12 vs. $13.09 which is what Tisol sold for).  If anyone has a lead on Vancouver local Tiki Cat suppliers (of chicken flavours), I would appreciate it.  For any other Tiki Cat buyers in Canada, can you let me know what you typically pay for a can or case?  Maybe Tisol was just selling theirs much lower than anyone else, and I need to suck up the extra expense!

Thanks in advance!

That does sound a lot cheaper than what I'm used to seeing Tiki sold for. I don't think you'll see it at that price again, especially as PetValu isn't the cheapest store anyway. I can't remember off the top of my head what I'd pay for a can of Tiki, but it's one of the more expensive brands so I don't buy it much.

Thanks kindly, pushylady for the quick reply!

It sounds like I was lucky to get that price!  Had I known, I might not have let Bear get so used to it, although he does eat a few other types of wet food as well.

I was able to track one other supplier of Tiki Cat in the Lower Mainland thanks to this thread (your earlier post!), but the shop is in Pitt Meadows, which is about 35 km from my home. It's called Pet Planet.  The person I spoke with was lovely, but they only had 24 cans of the chicken variety in stock.  She is going to have the owner contact me next week about possibly setting up a larger order (I'd like a 3 month supply at a time, so I don't have to make the drive out so often).  If that doesn't work, I will consider ordering from amazon.ca, but also maybe look into home cooked options, but the thought of that makes me nervous (I know I shouldn't be, but I am!!)

Oh wow! That might explain why a few weeks ago, Tiki Cat was on sale (buy 3 get one free) at PetCulture in Richmond. I actually got a few chicken flavour cans too but there's hardly any in stock. They seem to only buy one case of 24 cans every time. I haven't been to that store in a while but just letting you know, I've see them there sometimes! Normally, they sell it for $1.79 which is not cheap for those 3 oz cans.

I'm glad you found a contact in Pitt Meadows though! Although far, it's nice you've been able to make a connection with the owner :)

Any updates on this? I have been looking around and can't find anything either although I have a few cans on the counter. I have an IBD cat so I bought a variety of food to see what he would eat (he is adopted so I don't know his history other than he has IBD) and Tiki Cat was one of the products. The problem is I don't remember where I got it from and can't seem to find it in the regular spots. It could have been Tisol but I rarely go there and it sounds like I don't have to follow it up. My other concern would be a supplier running out and having to find another source but if Amazon has it then that is always another option.

My overall experience is that Tiki cat can become available as Pet stores in BC can order it in from the main importer: http://www.pacificpet.ca/product.aspx?Itemno=875-00770

That said, even getting it in, they have NEVER had the simple chicken flavor, not even the main importer. Most of the flavors are mixed with fish like tuna and salmon which in excess will get a cat hooked on the food and too much fish apparently can cause renal problems further down the road. I had to switch my cats, all four of them back to raw.

I should mention that I have an IBD cat and she does really well on raw turkey. Another option is to get freeze dried and rehydrate it with water.

That's a pretty depressing reply because my guy really likes fish based food and his IBD has been under control since he has been eating it. He didn't have much luck with chicken and won't eat turkey, lamb, or rabbit so I have been giving him fish based Fancy Feast food. He has stabilized so I want to move him to a better quality food so I was looking at Tiki Cat or Weruva but I was going to use fish based products because they seem to work well with his issues. I have been reading up on fish based food and it is not looking all that good for him.
