My 5 mo kitten had an incident with a scentsy warmer on Friday, dipping her tail in the heated wax by accident.
She immediately started darting around the house, hissing and crying. I took her into the vet right away where they shaved almost all of her tail.
The following days, her behaviour hadn't changed at all, and she actually started biting at, and attacking the tip of her tail... There is now exposed flesh and bone.
I took her back to the vet tonight, as soon as I saw that it had escalated quickly, and they told me the best option is to amputate a few inches from her tail to get rid of the dead cells and skin to hopefully stop her from self mutilating.
She now has an e collar on and is spending the night in her carrier, and tomorrow we're off to the vet again for the procedure.
My concern is.... What if this doesn't stop her from mutilating it. Can this cause her trauma to the point of developing a compulsive self mutilation problem? She's already been through so much.
I feel so guilty that she is losing some of her tail over something as dumb as a scentsy. (Which has been thrown out)
It scares me that if she continues to hurt herself, needing more surgery... About what I would do.
I'm already reaching out for help to cover this surgery.
I'm hoping things turn around and she'll get better... If anyone has dealt with a similar experience I would appreciate your input.
Thanks.
