I am the first time cat owner of a ragdoll, he's a year and a half old and does not like to be petted nor held . He's never hissed or clawed at me (he however does smack me with his paw when he wants food
). When he was a kitten he seemed a lot more affectionate. He does follow me around like a puppy, and has to always know where I am (when he's not  rubbing his glorious white fur all over my black jackets I mean) with 30 minute checks that include his soft high pitched screams. Will he mellow out as he ages or is he always going to be a loving passive aggressive shadow?

My Ragdoll (or ragdoll mix - she is a rescue so who knows) is affectionate in her own way.  She doesn't like to be held.  When I get home she will greet me at the door and flop at my feet for a tummy rub and that can last as long as I will rub her tummy.  if I pick her up, within 2 minutes, its over.  She does follow me around.  She doesn't sleep in my bed but she sleeps under it, and checks on me whenever I wake up in the middle of the night..  She also wakes me if I snore, or perhaps she wakes me because I stop breathing, IDK.  She is crazy for licking my fingers... when I hold her like a baby she will grab my hand with both paws on it makes me feel like she is using my hand like a baby bottle.  She will lick and bite my nose if it gets within her reach.  But she is really a gentle kitty... she plays paws,  not claws.  She is the peacekeeper between my other cats.  She loves walking on harness and leash, and loves going shopping at Petco.  She doesn't mind strangers petting her.... doesn't really get into it, but doesn't cringe away or anything.  She gives high fives, kisses, shakes, and sits.  She won't fetch.  She is vocal, but she has a very soft voice compared to my other Siamese I have had.

She sounds like a lovely little lady, but my little guy will attempt to bite (the vet tech was shocked, I was too)  if he doesn't want to be picked up :(

Hmmm well yeah.  She doesn't like being picked up, but she doesn't get aggressive about it.  She bites my nose in the middle of the night... not sure if its because I stop breathing, I snore to load, or she wants treats... she doesn't let me go back to sleep until she gets treats but I don't think that's why she wakes me, its more like, "Since you are up".  When she bites me when I am sleeping, she bites hard... when she sucks on my fingers, she nibbles, but doesn't bite hard.  Not sure why your little guy decided to bite.  Tell him "CUT IT OUT"... hope he outgrows it soon.

Today me and him came to a mutual understanding. I was trying to get a spider out of his fur on his head and he suddenly pressed against my finger and started purring so loud I could hear it over the tv. Turns out he LOVES having his head rubbed, and only his head (chin scratches raining supreme over head ones). He will sit there for hours if I let him. Still never likes to sit on my lap or cuddle but him sitting beside me is more than enough for me

I am curious about ragdolls disliking being held - of course every cat is his own - but isn't going floppy and limp when held a genetic feature of ragdolls which gives them their name?

i have an asian angora mutt who flops and loves to be held and i often wonder if he has the components of rag doll. there is a remarkable sweetness and almost dumbness to him. he's just not very intelligent or dog like, except he will push through any door you open- houdini. he's the only fuzzy cat in my pics.

It'a not a all ragdoll cat thing. My aunt owns three and only her youngest will go limp for cuddles. Oddly enough the only way he likes to be held when I do manage to pick him up is on his back like a baby. He does kinda go limp (drops his head and all) the second his front paws are a inch off the ground and I have to grab his lower end quickly. He's not mean when trying to tell me he wants me to let him go, just pushes against my chest a bit. (Please ignore errors, I'm on moblie)

i was reading they tried to breed the "floppy" out of rag dolls because they feared for safety. so it seems quite possible to have different temperaments.
if anyone cares about angora (slight hijack) i also read they believed them to be precursor to all long haired cats so maybe my little floppy kitty has some persian/berman traits of the rag doll. [emoji]128571[/emoji]

I think Ragdolls are predominantly more docile than floppy, and that the floppiness only really affected the founding breed cats.  Many of the fluffy non-ragdoll cats I have known have let you scoop them up upsidedown and cart them about.  I have a theory that it's a fluffy thing.  My ragdoll doesn't go floppy but he is a very gentle ball of fluff (an ever-growing ball of fluff, he's going to be HUGE when mature!).

My cat also loves to wash me, he really goes to town, nibbling and licking until I'm squeaky clean.

I've noticed that he doesn't purr as much/loudly as other cats I've known, although he did when he was a wee baby.  But sometimes he's ever so purry.  And sometimes, when I know that he is blissed out with happiness, he hardly purrs at all.  However, now it crosses my mind that many of the breed cats I've known don't purr with as much gusto as moggies.  Oddballs.  I don't know if this is an actual 'thing' or not.

Whilst my ragdoll has many of the generalised traits of the breed: gentle, loyal, loving, puppylike, loves water, LOVES tummy rubs, plays fetch etc, he is as much an individual as any cat you will find.  And as he's an 11 month old adolescent his character is still changing and forming.  At 1 and 1/2 years old your ragdoll is still a teenager too and might be just going through a stroppy phase.

I'm pleased that you've found the sweet spot on your ragdolls head, purrrrrrrr

Going floppy and limp doesn't necessarily mean they like it.  Tatiana is my first ragdoll, and I am not even sure of her lineage, so I can't claim her to be a perfect or even good representation of the breed.  She does flop a lot at my feet .  She is the peace keeper of my four cats.  She is pretty friendly with strangers - but she does not seek out attention, but rather responds to it.  She loves walking going for walks both on and off leash.  She is only somewhat vocal, but her voice is much softer than a Siamese.  She gives "kisses" "high fives" "shake" and she will  "sit" though it is definitely not her favorite.  Her favorite game is playing "hockey" with a bottle cap under the door and she gets very disappointed that the other kitties will not play this game with her.  She will always hit it at them, and they will sit and look at it - but she and eye have a grand ole time of it.  She doesn't fetch - and I blame this on her love of hockey... when I throw something for her to chase after, she sits there and looks at me like I am idiot... "What did you throw it way over there for?  There is no one there to hit it back!"

@MollyBlue  she sounds like great fun

Dudley really likes playing hockey too and spends hours batting things under doors, then pretending it wasn't him and scooping it out again or zooming around the door to bat it under, and repeat

He loves chasing after balls that I ping down my long corridor.  In fact, he just loves thundering up and down this corridor, so any excuse will do

He isn't terribly vocal except when I'm standing in front of "his" food cupboard.  I'm grateful of this as his voice is far from sweet!

He is incredibly loving and hangs about with me wherever I go
He sleeps in my bed every night and we spoon
I love the closeness but not the incredible heat he gives off!

He's just come and sat snuggled up to my back as I'm leaning forward to type, he's about to get squashed

Oh  my gosh, Tati loves to Thunder too.... we live in an apartment and I feel so sorry for the people below us sometimes... but I swear that cat intentionally stands there and pounces on the floor as hard as she can and if it doesn't get loud enough to suit her, she will climb up on the back of the couch and dive down on the floor for no good reason except to make that booming noise.  I wish she would spoon or cuddle me in bed, but she won't even sleep at the foot of my bed, or on my dresser... she comes up for loving and to say good night then darts under the bed to sleep.

Hahaha, Tatiana sounds like such a delicate name too

I live on the ground floor but I swear the foundations rock when Dudley is on the charge

I loves hearing about how every cat is their own, it's adorable. Micah has the whole "faithful puppy" thing going for him. I look down he's standing between my legs and his loves to sit beside (or behind) my feet when I sit on the sofa. Guarding me faithfully from my dresser top in the middle of the night. Seems I got a guard dog not a cat :lol3:. He has 2 cat beds, a cat tree, and a window perch, and yet his favorite spot to sleep is the kitchen floor for some reason. His voice is very high pitched and sqeaky, he opens his wide mouth and you think he ate a kitten (he calls for me if he can't see me). He's not all bad, just a bit strange.

Micah sounds very sweet.  Puffy is my kitchen cat (not a ragdoll)... Its where we keep the food.  I am pretty sure she sleeps in there because she doesn't want to chance missing a meal She is deaf so doesn't hear the food sack, can pop, or the cabinet door.  She has to rely on sense of smell and seeing the light come on.  Tatiana is a strange little cat too.  She has a very intense stare - she is chocolate or seal point.. the people who had her before us said chocolate, but I think more seal, but with her dark little face and big round blue eyes, and she won't do the I love you blink at all. My daughter says she is not affectionate, but she is, just in her own way.  And she understands spoken English pretty well. If you ask her if she wants a walk, she will beat you to the door.  One day when were talking about her we were commenting about her never purring and that night when she jumped in bed for cuddles and treats, she purred at me.  Little stinker.  They really do grow on you.

@ Brian yeah... her nickname though is Tots, or Tater Tots.  She keeps us amused with her misadventures and antics.  The misadventures of Miss Adventure. We have a balcony, and she loves sitting up on the ledge watching the goings on below and we always tell her to "be careful Ms. Tats"... she has fallen before.  So I sit out on the balcony with her and she will run as fast as she can across that rail.  When we tell her to knock it off or she's going inside, she will slow down, but as she is walking across the rail, she will make direct eye contact with you to make sure you are watching and when she knows you are, she will slip one foot off of the rail to watch you jump up and try and catch her and then she runs inside, happy as a lark.

I've been thinking of getting him a friend recently, a little brother so he could teach him how to bring my bras to me as gifts. I don't think getting a adult cat would be good for him, he's actually a really big push over. My neighbors outdoor 6 pound runt of a female scared him away from the window in my bedroom for three days. I just don't want him to be lonely, and as he sleeps from 8pm to 7am every night (on the dresser, flat on his back) he's up most of the day. My new job won't be happening for two months yet and I would hope this would be enough time to introduce them and feel safe enough to leave them alone. Should I just let him be though? I would hate to stress him out.

I'm looking for a friend for Dudley too
I've been practically with him 24/7 since he was 2 months old and so he's used to being with someone (well, me), but when I move in a few months he will be left alone for a couple of hours, several times a week.  This amount of time alone is hardly anything in most people's eyes but I reckon Dudley would notice.  I already think he'd greatly benefit by having a chum to hang out & play with, and I think he'd appreciate the company for the hours we're apart.  He's also a big softie and I won't have him being bullied because of his docility.  So, I'm seriously thinking about finding him another likeminded, ragdoll type pal.  I also think to find a kitten or a young male who has been neutered between 3 & 5 months old, so he can learn the ropes and not have to undergo stressful retraining; although I would consider a slightly older cat, if said cat, Dudley, and I were a clear match.  I don't know whether I should get him before I move or after though, as I would like them both to feel the new place is theirs jointly from the off.  Ideally, I'd like to rescue but I already know that my soon-to-move status goes against my being deemed suitable for rehoming beforehand due to the upheaval and 450 mile journey.  I'm all of a dither about it actually.  I keep on browsing cat breeds and nosing about the net for kittens, not knowing whether I should acquire one now (my heart screams, yes), or wait until I've moved and search the rescue centres (my head tilts towards this plan).

But, in your case, I say, go for it!  Find Micah a wee friend sooner rather than later if you are going to leave him on his lonesome whilst you're at work.  If you get a kitten nowish I doubt the introduction would take any great length of time and you'd feel much happier about leaving them in each other's company (Micah can babysit) than you would after your job has started.  Are you thinking of rescuing or buying, and are you thinking of a particular breed?

It's all very exciting
I'm getting butterflies in my stomach just thinking about our two new furbabies
