Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has advice for big boy Phineus here.  I trapped him right outside my house when he showed up in and was rejected by my little feral colony.  His eyes are severely infected.  He is a feral, or so I think. I'm not 100% on that yet given his fragile state but hopefully he's friendly.

He is scheduled for "emergency" surgery this Tuesday morning, so he's waiting a week as if he's not been through enough.  I don't have much choice and I'm grateful to the rescue who are stepping up for him!  It's just a shame.  He's been prescribed painkillers and antibiotics in the meantime.

The issue?  He does not seem to be eating much and has diarrhea, presumably parasites.  He mostly likes dried friskies, and I've only gotten him to eat perhaps one Pillpocket with his antibiotics in.  He does take the painkiller now if I give him it on a tiny piece of tuna but I'm wondering if anyone has ideas as he needs to maintain his strength for the big day.  Is there anything a vet could do in the meantime to get him through the next couple of days?

I just bought some Fancy Feast to see if that won't tempt him as I figure he must be feeling awful.  Maybe the medicine is making him feel groggy?

Also, his diagnosis -  2 years old.

Left eye: Severe entropion blepharospasm.  Cannot visualize globe.  Needs to be enucleated (removed)

Right eye: Severe corneal ulceration, small rupture. Heavy discharge. Needs entropion repair.

We're in NY if that makes a difference.

Poor little guy. Thanks for taking care of him!

Does he drink water on his own? If yes, I think you can give him some pedialyte, bought or homemade. He needs to stay hydrated, and he need the calories.

What are the meds you're giving him? Maybe they make him feel nauseated, which would cause him to not eat.

I hope he likes the FF, that would be good to get some food in him.

I'm sure other, more experienced members will chime in soon, in the meantime keep us updated!

I forgot about Pedialyte!  Thanks so much!  I'll try to get ahold of some tomorrow.

His meds are:

Buprenex-oral analgesic

Baytril (Enrofloxacin) 22.7mg

The FF arrived and I just gave him some.  He started eating that along with the Friskies dry and I just put his 2nd dose of meds so he's definitely had his painkillers at least.  I don't think he likes pill pockets though which is a shame.
