We brought Hunter, our adorable white and grey tabby, home from a foster parent about 2 months ago. He's approx 6 months old, and his history before that is unknown. He and several other cats were left in an abandoned home in San Jose, CA before being rescued. Last Saturday he suddenly developed rear leg weakness and had his first accident (peed right outside his litter box). That night he pooped on the kitchen floor and then peed in our bed again that night. We took him to the vet Sunday and they did blood work and urinalysis. Urinalysis was fine but the blood work had elevated globulins (not sure if it was machine error or accurate reading). After having difficulty getting decent advice or help at this vet (Banfield), we took him to a local vet that spent 3 hours with Hunter on Tuesday. After X-rays that show no injuries, we now have Hunter on antibiotics and a steroid.

The rear leg weakness seams nurological but impossible to really tell. He's also had trouble with his left eye since we got him (keeps it closed often but the eye itself looks fine). He doesn't seem to have a decreased appetite (doesn't eat more than 1/4 cup of dry food a day since we got him). In fact, his appetite may be up over the past couple weeeks. It's been hard to tell if his energy is down as we've had to keep him in the bathroom most of the time due to the inability to use the litter box. When we let him out, he doesn't seem to have any issues with energy. He's very alert and wants to do the things he's used to but just has trouble walking. We're about a day into the steroids and two days in on the antibiotics and it seems there MAY be some improvement with his walk but who knows. We worried that it may be the dry form of FIP. Anyone else have similar issues with a kitten?

My experience with FIP was not like this, but I know there are different kinds. With Darcy, she was fine one day and then hiding under the bed, lethargic the next. When we took her to the vet, she had a very high temperature 1.05 that never went down. I'm sure someone will show up with better advice for you, but in the meantime,
for you and your gorgeous baby Hunter.  I hope the vets find it's something they can easily treat.

Yes, I keep thinking it must not be FIP if he isn't super lethargic. Apparently the dry form of FIP can show itself in an unlimited amount of ways. For now, praying the antibiotic and steroid lead to some improvement. I wish he could control his urine, as it makes it difficult to spend time with him and I hate to just keep him in the bathroom :/
