Haha! How kind Primula, thank you! Yes the cold really is quite something here which is really why I wanted to get Pickwick indoors! I am really struggling with the climate here, so my partner has agreed to move with me back to England next year.....all that snow is lovely for a few days, but it lasts here for months, and I find it hard to walk in snow trousers! :-)

@Primula  I've lived here my whole life and i still struggle with winter. I wouldn't move though, as i would miss the other seasons. February in Montreal is dreadful, but May till November makes up for it.
I'm slightly biased as i am in love with my city.
@Beckyroo  England is my second choice :)

Haha! Nice to see England is a choice Pixie Ma! :-) The weather is indeed lovely during the summer here. I have to say that you really do have definite seasons here and it can change almost overnight! We have had a wonderful summer and the autumn colours here are just beautiful! I am looking forward to moving back home though....but I guess I am a little biased too. Two of my cats came over from the UK with me, and they were NOT impressed with five months of snow ;-) xx

@Pixies Ma  I am fortunate that everyone I work with is very close. The two cats I have are fortunate they ended up on the property I work at. The two guys I work for gave me pay advances to take the two feral kittens to my vet. I have no kids so I can afford it. The cats live in the building I work at since early May and are socialized now. I was feeding them for several months before I trapped them so they weren't overly difficult with me taking them to the vet. Had I not been able to get the pay advances I would have taken them to the Humane Society. I definitely meant no offense to you, just that if a person can manage the stray / feral and can pay the vet bills by all means do so as it allows for other cats to get help. I think you are a great person for caring for cats regardless how you go about it and taking a cat to the Humane Society is what they are there for. If money is tight or a person does not know how to deal with a stray / feral then I would say most definitely take it to the Humane Society.

As for Canadian winter, my cats Kitty and Rusty spent there first winter outside but it will be their last outside because they are indoor-only now.

@Shane Kent  I was not at all offended! You seemed to want to make sure people use the SPCA only when necessary, which is totally the right thing. I think i just assumed everybody is as broke as i am :)

@Pixies Ma  That's good, I wouldn't want to offend a fellow cat lover, especially one that has rescued cat(s)
It kind of startles me when people say i'm a cat lover cause i am much more of a dog person (with no dog)
I love both my cats and will try to help whatever comes to me in need, but i'm still baffled at to how i am now owned by two cats. They kind of sneaked up on me, as cat are so good at doing

My own opinion is that nearly everyone who posts on this site qualifies for whatever low cost help we can get for our rescued cats--whether it's from the Humane Society or elsewhere. Becky said she spent 3,000 dollars on helping another feral kitty, which blows my mind. I think my most expensive vet bill was 800 dollars. We take in the kinds of cats that most people aren't interested in adopting, that require the most patience and care. We take in cats who otherwise would be outdoors, breeding more feral cats, who would have difficult lives filled with suffering. We take in cats who are FIV positive, who have been shot or abused, who have vision and hearing problems. Each time we adopt these cats we are doing a service to the Humane Society and other shelters, who don't have to spend several hundreds of dollars of their own funds to care for these cats. I will always encourage folks on this site to avail themselves of whatever low-cost services they can find because the truth is that we spend a lot of our money caring for these beautiful creatures at great personal sacrifice. Before I had 5 rescued cats, I used to contribute regularly to the Humane Society. Now I feel as though I am a branch of the Humane Society myself LOL.

My most expensive bill so far was $1,700 last spring for Looby Loo to be properly spayed. First idiot vet left ovarian tissue behind.

Dental hospital wanted $2,000 for my Harry's full-mouth teeth extraction in July. He died post-surgery so there was no bill to pay.

Such a great post MsAimee. $3000 was alot to pay, but I had never had a cat like this and she was so ill, that we didn't really have time to look for help elsewhere. We were fortunate that we had the funds to help her....of course I would do it again if we had to. I understand that not everyone can do that, but as you say, we are all here to help these gorgeous creatures, and we get the help wherever we can. Wherever we go to get the funds, the ultimate goal is compassion for another living being and to make their lives better. You are all heros on here! xxxx
