Jack has been getting stopped up every 3 days requiring pain meds and enemas. I fear I will have to take him to vet tomorrow (not for treatment). We went totally grain free, I got the slippery elm, I tried changing and upping his Miralax, I give him extra water, cocunut water and butter. It's like it just sits in his digestive track for 2 or 3 days but he doesn't Feel stopped up during that time. In my mind I'm thinking this is total shutdown.

Tonight, Again, I gave him a pain pI'll but he wouldnt let me mess with him so I could not do an enema.

But here's the thing. The obstruction is Bigger than when he was eating Fancy Feast.

Is there anyone who has had great luck with the RX foods?

Ranitidine?

I can't afford the cisparide.

Any specific thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am sorry no one has responded.. My guy has not been diagnosed with megacolon but does have an issue with constipation.

I am giving him 1/4 tsp Miralax twice a day-mixing with water and adding to food.

I am also giving him Cisapride, 2-3 times a day...

I cannot help you anymore.. I do not know what to tell you...

All I can say, is Good Luck...

Sending prayers and vibes that your kitty gets speedy healing. My daughter's cat is on lactulose (the cat is 18) and that seems to help the best. She also takes Laxatone by Vetriquonol. Miralax doesn't work for every cat, just like it doesn't for every human - Miralax didn't work well for me yet lactulose does. Our cat was on Iams Vet Prescription Intestinal Plus but is now eating Sheba's Perfect Portions chicken and turkey and is doing A-ok, which is a blessing considering that she is old enough to vote!lol

I know that you probably have already read this article, but just in case not, here is a link:

http://felinecrf.org/constipation.htm

If you scroll down, you will see a link to info on Slippery Elm Bark, which is very soothing for both the respiratory and digestive systems. It does brew up into a thickened tea and some cats don't like that. However, it can be added to tuna juice, watered down canned food, etc.

It think the issue here is as you as you stated, "it just sits there", and that's because, as far as I understand it, with Megacolon, the colon doesn't work correctly and the stool actually does kind of just sit there and needs a push to move along down the tract.  Unfortunately, that's where the cisapride comes into play.  Have you discussed with your Vet any other drug that works similarly, or have you checked into getting the drug elsewhere, other that thru your Vet.  Many times you can have your Vet write the prescription, then have it filled elsewhere, even at Costco, and you don't have to be a member to do so.   Vets often charge WAY more than any other pharmacy to fill prescriptions.  You might even be able to get it filled on-line as long as your have a prescription.  Also, many times, if you can't afford a certain prescription, the drug companies will work with you.  Have you tried that?

Additionally, per this thread, LOW fiber food is best.  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/205398/diet-to-manage-megacolon

Hi,

Really, forget the Miralax and other pharmaceuticals, I am a nurse in nsg home and can tell you that ripe banana works better then lactulose miralax and other let's be honest-crap made just for profit and harming you in the long run.

Anyway http://www.petwellbeing.com/c/cat-products/condition/constipation  -products from this site SAVED lives of many pets. You can also give them a call to ask for advise since your situation is really urgent -http://www.petwellbeing.com/meetexperts

Another wonderful site where you can call and ask for advice, run by vet  azmira.com

What does your vet say? I think you have to figure out what's causing this, and your vet is the one who can help you with a diagnosis.

Here's more information about constipation, possible causes and treatment -  [article="33339"]Everything You Need To Know About Constipation In Cats[/article]

Also, according to this article by Dr. Boltz  - a feline vet expert - you should switch to wet food. She says -
In constipated cats, an all-dry food diet is thought to contribute to the development of constipation in susceptible cats. A canned food diet, often with additional water added to the meal, is a cornerstone of therapy for these patients.

How is your cat doing? I forgot to mention that my vet taught me  to mechanically assist our cat in passing stool using gentle massage and perhaps you could discuss using that technique. As Anne says, your vet is the best resource and don't be shy about asking for a second opinion, especially from a feline specialist.
