I think this question has been asked before and we got some really weird answers, but we have a lot of new members so let's try it again. :)

For me it was black pudding in Ireland. I didn't know the color came from blood. :nausea:

I had some worm burgers. They just tasted kind of like mushy salty bread. I don't think them not being good had much to do with being worms; I think the particular product was just very poorly flavored, as I've also had soy burgers with a similar bad salty smushyness.

I've eaten a savory pastry that included crickets (couldn't really individually distinguish them), fried moss, some other sort of grub in a dumpling, hákarl (Icelandic rotting shark), a number of edible worts picked directly off of the beach... that's about all I can think of. Which of those is strangest is probably culturally relative and can be left to the reader to decide.

Caterpillars, ants and brain salad. I think it was a sheep's brain and was served on lettuce leaves with a lemon dressing.

Reading the reply's remind me of the show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmem. UGH!

I've been a vegetarian ever sense I was 9 years old and the weirdest thing I ever ate was squirrel meat when I was a kid. I don't remember what it taste like.

IDK - disgusting is relative. I find myself compelled to try new things when I see them on menus.

I did turn down chocolate covered ants some years ago. Just could NOT go there.

Not sure if anything I've eaten is truly gross; rattlesnake and calf brains were both extremely good eating. But honestly not all that strange.

Agreed. Different cultures have different definitions of what is "weird" or "gross".  Some cultures call cheese weird. A lot of Americans like peanut butter while other cultures wouldn't touch it. A lot of Aussies like Vegemite and some Brits like their Marmite. It's all about how you were raised.

I've tried Vegemite. I don't love it, I don't hate it and I'd call it an acquired taste. I've seen fools on Youtube take a spoonful of it and wonder why they don't like it. A little goes a long way. I added a little to a bagel with cream cheese, thinly sliced onion and sliced tomato. It was rather nice.

When I was a kid, my mom would cook the gizzards of  a turkey on Thanksgiving and my grandma and I would put salt on them and eat them. Is that weird? I'd never do it now because I don't like the taste of organ meats. I guess I grew out of it. I also used to like sardines on saltines. Now- no way. I hate anything fishy tasting.

Not very adventurous here. I've had alligator, escargot and ostrich. Not very weird if you ask me.

It's probably a toss-up between the grilled lamb's testicles in Azerbaijan and the takoyaki -- octopus tentacles fried in dough balls -- in Japan. I ate a lot of weird stuff in Japan, some of which I didn't manage to identify. The lamb's testicles were surprisingly tasty. I've also eaten calf's brain and lutefisk, and I love escargot. I like unusual foods.

Hmm...I'm not really adventurous on that side but maybe calamari (squid). I loved it.
Does trying my cats' and previous dog's foods count? :lol3:

I've been a vegetarian since before I was born, so I've been spared some of the weirder culinary delights.

I have tried deep fried lotus root, horse tail ferns and pickled plums though. That's about as adventurous as I get.

Oh, I once tried alcohol made from mare's milk. Does that count?

I am sorry I started reading this thread. Some of these things are really gross. The weirdest food I have eaten is bear when I was a kid and more recently frog legs. They are not too weird compared to some of these that have been mentioned. :lol3:

Not very adventurous here either.

I've eaten beef heart and pig stomach. That's pretty much it.

@norachan I've been wanting to try the fermented mare's milk for years. I've heard it described as champagne mixed with yogurt, which sounds weird but pretty good to me. Did you like it?

@oldgloryrags88  Personally I think dog and cat food takes the cake by far as the weirdest thing in this thread.

It does have that sour yougurty taste, but the milk is much stronger tasting and smelling than cows milk. More like a goat's milk smell.

It seemed like the right thing to drink at the time. I was in Mongolia and I'd just spent two weeks living in one of those round yurts and horse riding every day. There's not much for a vegetarian to eat in Mongolia so I jumped at the chance of something different.
