Hey Guys: I am not sure if I am panicking, but last night I noticed he was eating much less.  Then just for 1/2 a minute, he made a sound like he was choking a bit.  No throwing up or anything and I noticed he slept more last night before we went to bed than usual.

This morning, he turned down fancy feast and eat some of his special dry food that I buy for his stomach and kidneys.  I thought maybe the can was bad so I opened a fresh can . He came to his bowl immediately, sniffed it and walked away.

When the vet originally gave him a special check up when he became ill originally when I adopted him, she said his kidneys look smaller than normal (from the Sonagram), and she was not sure if that was a birth defect so she wanted to prevent kidney failure or problems and gave me renal dry food plus a special dry food for sensitive stomach's so I mix that for him.  He has been thriving for almost 1 month.

He normally eats more than 1/2 can in the morning and another 3 hours later.  I leave more than 1/2 when I go to work and it is always finished when I get home.

I am worried.  I will see the vet tomorrow to see what she thinks.

Joyce

Hi Joyce,
Not sure why he is making the choking sound. My boy had this something as you described. He hung his head low to do it for several seconds. It got me worried and I managed to take a video of and I showed the video to the vet. I asked is he choking on hairball? After looking at the video, the vet said he is just clearing his throat. So after hearing what the vet said, I left it alone. But once in awhile he does that while drinking water. I'lol let my vet know that too the next time my boy goes there.
So if your kitty do that again, get it on video and show to your vet.
Was this morning's meal his first meal or second meal. If it's second, he might be still full from the first. Is this the first time he rejects his meal? Or did you change the food?
Anyway, check if he eats later and please let your vet know what happened.

Hi. He only did that for a few seconds. Did not happen again. This is his first meal. That is why I am concerned. He is still playful snd alert.

If you did not change his food, then it's pretty strange that he smell and walked away
Let the vet know about the both actions and please let us know what the vet says. Hope it's nothing serious.

Cats can be very picky eaters. They sometimes get sick of a certain kind of food and refuse to eat it. My cat Kiwi is one of the pickiest cats I have ever met. If she decides she doesn't like the food I've put down for her, she will sniff it and walk away. And sometimes, I swear she gives me this look like "You expect me to eat this?".

Maybe your cat is tired of that flavor of fancy feast?

Ya, I second what @Raina21 said. Can you try another flavor?
My boy did change his taste at least 3 times already.

How about changing to another place for him to eat? Maybe another part of the room? It might work.

Hi everyone:  I came home briefly to check up on him from work. He did eat, not all, of the fancy feast left for him and some of his dry food - He gave me a great greeting and bounced around happy I was home.  Now he is resting on a spot he loves cleaning himself and just quiet.

I feel, as long as he is active, grooming himself, and wants to play, they are good signs.  I have to be careful what I feed him.  His stomach is very sensitive and even when I tried giving him a fancy feast with some gravy and beef chunks, he ate very little and then threw up.  I will be at a loss to know what wet food is safe to feed him if I have to change his food.

Any suggestions?  Remember I must stay away from heavy proteins that make his kidneys work to hard digesting.

Just tried another can, grilled feast, which he ate, not the whole portion I gave him, but he ate.  He also eats the dry food.

I am so afraid to try a different brand and get him sick.

Will see what the vet suggests as she likes fancy feast.

At least he is eating now, though not his full meal which is better than not eating. Better not work up his stomach too much.
Yes, wait and see what the vet suggest.

Hi all:  Today is the day I take my little Sushi for a few checkups.

Good news.  He woke up hungry and ate almost a full can of his fancy feast this morning and bounced around the house, wanting to play and attack me.  I feel relieved.  He drinks out of his cat fountain 2x a day that I am aware of.  So happy he is not dehydrated.  I do add some water to his fancy feast as well.

I am bringing a urine sample to the vet and he needs to have his first flea treatment.  I am not sure I want her to deworm him.  Is that dangerous?  He is a house cat but was on the street for a time and they don't know how long.  The only reason is survive, is that he was fed - he is not a hunter and is mainly docile.

I am hoping that his urine sample will show an improvement in his kidney function.

Love to all

Hi Joyce,
Great to hear that Sushi is eating and bouncing around.

Even though Sushi is indoor and anyway he came from the outdoors, it better to deworm him and get his vaccinations done.

Hope his kidney is doing well.

Do let us know after the visit to the vet :)

Thank you.  I had to bring his urine sample without him.  When I went for the visit, which is come as you will, there were so many dogs that he hissed and spit.  I will bring him on the days the vet is not crowded.

HI everyone.  The vet told me the urine sample shows an infection - I have to put sushi in a carrier for 2 hours and then take him to the vet so she can take urine directly from the bladder . The good news is he is eating, jumping, initiates playing with me, runs around the house and then comes out at me and grabs my legs, meows in my face to feed him more fancy feast, etc.  Looks great.  She said not to panic which I do.  She said as long as he is eating, playing, and not in distress, it cannot be too serious.

Guys, how am I going to put him in a carrier for two hours and listen to him cry - I am so distressed over this.

This is his second infection.  The first one they did not know he was sick and later he started throwing up so badly he had nothing left.  I ran him to the doctor and she gave him an IV to hydrate him along with a strong antibiotic.  She told me no more treats, just food, and that is how I have been with him ever since.

He drinks from his fountain in front of me at least 1x = 2x a day.  I am not home with him 24/7 so I don't know if he drinks more.

As I said before, his dry food is Renal mixed with Prescription Diet i/d for Gastrointestinal Health for his sensitive stomach. He will not eat the wet version only the dry version.  He enjoys the food and eat it as a supplement to fancy feast.  He is a small cat. They think he maybe 1 years old, but not sure since they found him on the street.

The second thing is when they extract urine directly from him, he is going to scream.  I know I should be there and hold him with them or will he attribute the discomfort to me.  I am stressing.  I have to see the doctor tomorrow and needed to get some emotional support.  Thank goodness for this site.

Don't stress. You're doing your very best. Although this may cause your cat discomfort, diagnosing an issue is key. They will give him a mild sedative and a bit of pain killer I'm sure. You will get through this.

Hi Joyce, you are doing your best for Sushi and nobody likes to hear their baby cry. Don't stress yourself out. Just keep talking to Sushi when she's in the carrier. Is someone going with you? Are you driving to the vet by yourself? It'll be good if someone goes with you so at least they can drive or take care of her.
don't worry while you are at the vet, I'm sure they'll do minimal discomfort to Sushi. It's better to have her checked discover the problemt and suffer more later. So please calm down ok?

Thank you for your kind words, but how can I get through 2 hours of locking him up in his carrier.  I feel horrible doing that.

Why must she be put in the carrier for two hours and then take him to the vet? Is it a two hour journey? But I thought you said the vet is just two blocks away from your home?
Or is it that you want to calm her down before that? Think it dosen't work that way. What you can do is just bring out the carrier, put some of her toys in it and let her play around and in the carrier. Let her get use to the carrier. Is your carrier with the see through top? If it is, then at least she can see you and you can talk and assure her. I prefer those carrier that is like a shoulder bag with soft material and not the hard type than those box like with handles. Shoulder type keeps my boy very near me and not tiring when carrying rather than the handle type that is an arm's length away.

Hi, The vet  needs his bladder to be full and putting him in his carrier for 2 hours prevents him from urinating.  Has anyone done this before.  I feel so uncomfortable doing this and hearing  him cry for 2 hours.
