My daughter has a 10 month old kitten who just gave birth to one kitten. She had let her play outside with her, then lost track of her. She didn't appear for 3 days. We didn't realize she was pregnant because she is so chubby. She appeared in the living room with a kitten in her mouth. We fixed a box for her, but she would rather follow my daughter around. Her other cat is almost 2 years old. Mom to Stevie, the new mom. I know, my daughter neglected to have her spayed also. I've been away at work for the last 5 days. I get home and the new born is nursing on pregnant mom. She keeps swiping the kitten from the real mom. I think the kitten is weak. I've been putting baby with real mon, Stevie, but pregnant mom hisses and takes baby. This has probably been going on the whole time I was gone. Does mommy still have milk? I don't know. She would stay and nurse when I put baby with her. But she doesn't stay long. She follows me around. I have to keep pregnant mom away. Does pregnant mom have milk? I would assume not until she gives birth. She was a great mom. I wish she would give birth and keep this one too. Then I know the new born would be alright. After this litter is old enough, I'll make sure my daughter brings them to get spayed!

Hi...I think it is really cute that a pregnant cat would steal someone's kitten.

Anyway, could you elaborate a little? You said there was a 10 month old that just gave birth to another kitten. I am confused on who is who, and which cat is what. I think I can answer a little better if you clarify that.

The most important thing is that this kitten be fed by one mom or the other. Check the nipples of both cats and put the kitten with whoever has milk asap.

When is the pregnant mom due? Suckling may bring in her milk. She sounds like the better mother.

You also may need to separate these cats for awhile. The kitten MUST stay with one mom cat or the other!

In the meantime, you need to buy kitten formula and supplement this kitten before it dies since it is weak. Powdered PetAg is best given with a syringe.

How is the kitten today, and which mom is it nursing? Have you determined if either actually has milk yet?

I had 2 pregnant Queens, a mother/daughter duo as well, and when Naomi was in the early stages of labor she climbed into her daughters whelping box to be with the kittens. After she birthed, the co-mothered all the kittens, feeding whomever needed feeding. Like others said, it doesn't matter who is nursing the kitten as long as its being fed!

M Cherry....yes I guess it is confusing. Stevie is the new mom. Little Girl is the pregnant one. This will be her second litter. She adopted Stevie as her own with her 1st litter. She was a great mom. Stevie's mom...not so great. So Little Girl keeps swiping the baby. I separated them because I thought Stevie would have milk. She does want her kitty, I figured out. But she won't take it back from Lititle Girl. So the baby is with Stevie but she keeps hiding it. Yes I think little Girl would be the better mom. I'm not sure how soon she is due to have her kittens but she looks like it could be any day.

Is your daughter able to keep all of the cats 100% inside until they can be spayed? They can get pregnant again within a week of giving birth. You may also want to prebook appointments as it can take a while. Do you need help finding a low cost clinic?

Is the baby nursing? Growing?

Thanks for looking out for them!

I have found the kitten! If Stevie saw me watching her she would not go to the kitten. I found the baby and it seems to have put on weight. I was so afraid that Stevie no longer had milk because I hadn't been here to observe if she had nursed the kitten. The kitten looks healthy. Stevie wants her kitten I'm glad to see.
When Little Girl had her 1st litter it was a week apart from my daughter's other kitten's litter. They both woke her up around 2am, a week apart, giving birth in her bed. I told her she would have to keep both litters in her bedroom and care for them since she was responsible for letting them out to get pregnant. She kept telling me she would get them spayed. The first couple of weeks it seemed Sam and Little Girl were both good moms. A few more weeks and Little Girl was nursing both litters of 3. Sam had less and less to do with hers, until she refused to even be near them. When the kittens were old enough to approach her she was very hostile towards them. My daughter brought her in to be spayed finally. But Stevie seems to spend a lot of time away from the baby. She still likes playing with Sweet Pea and Sweet Pea stays around her. She's not ready to give up her playmate. They were constantly playing and always lying with each other. I will keep an eye on Stevie and the baby and if have to I will put her with the new litter when those babies come.

I'm glad the kitten appears to be doing okay, but Stevie and Sweet Pea may need to be separated for awhile, to make sure mom cares for the new kitten.

It's good you're supervising!

Saturday 2, thanks. I think Stevie is in heat. Is that possible one week after giving birth? She keeps trying to run out the door. I took the baby a while last night. Stevie was calling for her all over the house. I showed her the baby so she tool baby and put her back. Then started playing with Sweet Pea again. I wish she would spend more time with the baby. I think I'm going to have my daughter keep the 2 of them in her room. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. Too many distractions I the rest of the house. I go back to work Saturday morning, so I will need to have my daughter keep an eye on them.

I think putting them in her room is a very good idea! Mom can be let out to play with Sweet Pea once or twice a day for a little while, but then put back in with her kitten. This should happen until the kitten is weaned to solids around 5-6 weeks old, then it's less critical.

It is quite possible that Stevie is in heat, so she must absolutely not get out! She can be spayed when her kitten is 6-8 weeks old.

How is the other pregnant cat doing?

Sarthur2 Stevie is spending much more time with her baby. It's going better since I don't allow her to play all day with Sweet Pea. Little Girl has given birth to 4 babies. She is a Tortoiseshell so I hope at least one of her babies will be too. They all look black now. Black must be a dominant gene because there are so many black ones outside. Only one orange. A few tortoiseshell and Siamese. I was going to put baby with Little Girl but Stevie is being a better mom. She gets upset if I hold baby or move her. So I'll let her be a mom. She keeps putting baby behind the sofa in a corner. Tried fixing a box for her. No. Back to the corner. So I put a soft beach towel so baby won't be on the bare floor! All is well, for now. Thank you!

Reading through this thread and I'm so glad the kitty is thriving. From previous threads I've read here, kitten-swiping between mother cats isn't unheard of -- but it's definitely interesting. It was suggested to me to get a kitchen scale and monitor the kittens' weight in ounces to make sure they were growing. If you get concerned about their weight again, I'd invest in that. I'm also glad that the girls will get spayed once you get the chance. Even if female cats are indoors with no males around, spaying keeps them healthy. We had a dog die from ovarian cancer (::EDIT:: the cancer was in her uterus, actually. whoops!) that we were totally unaware of until she passed away, because we didn't think to spay her since she couldn't get pregnant due to paralysis. It was a sad incident that really opened our eyes. Be sure to find research on what kinds of health benefits spaying and neutering can provide for cats, and forward that research to your daughter so that she can make the best, most informed decisions for these sweet cats in the future. The more she knows about it, then the more she'll be on top of it. I would also recommend keeping cats inside all the time, as it lengthens their lives and significantly reduces the chances of getting ill or injured -- but I understand that this isn't always possible. Still, if it ever becomes possible, the option is there for your daughter. It's never too late to reform a cat's behavior and get them to be an indoor cat. We recently had an indoor/outdoor cat, who's currently about 10 years old. After she fractured her hip by jumping off a tree, we kept her indoors. Sometimes she'll meow at the door, but she gives up after a while and lives a happy life inside, where she can't get injured like that again. But again, that's a personal lifestyle choice and only a cat's owner can determine what makes the cat happiest. As long as they're fed, and their medical needs are taken care of, I'd say their quality of life is superb.

Best of luck to you! It sounds like things are going well and the kitties and Mommas are in safe and capable hands. Keep us updated and when/if possible, post pictures!

Commanderscott, Sarthur2, Thanks for advice and comments. I've been meaning to get back for an update. We've been distracted by the flooding, though things are starting to get back to normal. I can drive out to get to work thankfully. No mail. No UPS. No trash pickup. But the water is down. My house remained dry!!! Stevie decided she wanted to sleep next to me with baby. I sensed she was there early in the morning so I moved carefully. I put a blanket under them. I went to work, so my husband had my daughter get them off the bed. That was it for Stevie. If she couldn't stay in my bed,she no longer wanted her kitten. So my daughter waited and tried to reunite but didn't work. So Little Girl took the baby. All are doing well now, though Stevie & Sweet Pea don't play anymore.
Little Girl is a Tortoiseshell. One of her 4 kittens was a Tortoiseshell also. The other 3 are black. Black must be dominant. Love black cats but there are so many outside that it's getting hard to tell them apart. Many are still a bit wild. They only come a bit close when I feed them. But the tortoiseshells are my favorite. The little one died at only a couple of weeks old. So chubby one day. Dead the next. The others are still fine. Stevie 's baby is bigger and is already getting out of the box.
There are so many cats outside. We live in a wooded area. SOO many cats in the woods. I had spayed/neutered 100 cats then gave up. It got too expensive and the cats just keep showing up. We're going to try to fix the females that bring the babies. But they usually show up already pregnant or with babies in tow. Then they wean babies and disappear again. We play with the kittens we can catch to make them friendly. We love all of them. That's our problem. So we bring some in and out but we can't keep them all inside. My husband would explode. And there are just too many! There's a program in Lafayette that only charges $25 to fix feral cats. But it just hasn't worked out that we can bring some of them in.
We will keep trying.
