Schrodie has his dental work scheduled for Friday morning. He had been doing much better with his stomatitis, eating and putting his weight back on really well. On his last follow-up exam we decided that it was time to go ahead with the work.He will be having his upper left fang extracted for sure because it's broken, and probably some more once we see the X rays and get a good clean view inside the mouth.

History here:

But wouldn't you know it? Just this week, yesterday, as a matter of fact, he was SUPER stinky and his poor little mouth looks like hamburger again. So, he's on a short course of antibiotic until surgery day and he has some Bupe on hand. He got a dose just a little while ago and he's a lot more comfortable for the time being.

So we're back to Bupe and whatever he feels like eating. For now, he's eating pretty well and we'll do what we need to do to make sure he keeps eating for the next 48 hours. Right now he's looking out the window, on his favorite windowsill but he's got his little mouth pursed open a bit, like it's sore. But hey, it's better than hiding...

Wish us luck!

Okay, he's been checked in and he's in the queue. I elected the "Geriatric Anesthesia" option-- Sevofluorane for the gas, with midazolam, morphine and glycopyrrolate for pre-sedation and pain control. He's definitely having the left upper fang extracted, and others to be determined once the vet sees inside and looks at the X rays.

We're stocked up on soft canned food and Gerber's ham baby food!

Heh-- I've been on the "doing" end of so many similar dental procedures like Schrodie's having today and the vast majority of them do just fine. Even the old tom I did who was discovered to have SCC when we did his dental did just great. Mouse was twice Schrodie's age... he was 22 years old!

But even knowing all this and being the dental tech for countless canine and feline dental procedures in my time-- many of them much more involved than what my guy is set to have today, on pets who weren't as robust and healthy as he is, with much 'harsher' anesthesia drugs like ketamine and acepromazine (both of which I hate in cats)-- I still have a touch of the 'nervous cat mom' thing going on.

I would be nervous too.  Hope Schrodie's surgey makes him feel better soon and he recovers quickly. Today is a day off for me and I will be checking in on here through out the day.  I have never dealth with dental issues with my cats but if you need someone to talk to feel free to send me a private message.

It's natural to worry, even though there's not much to worry about.

Keep us posted

He's home now and he did just great. He's obviously high as a kite, on some great happy drugs...

He had just the one fang extracted and a good thorough dental prophy. He had NO FORL's and no other real problems, just some mild stomatitis in the back of his mouth which we think will settle out after he heals up. The vet was very pleased that he didn't really even have any real periodontal disease, because we have always done home care. At age 11, and his only dental issue other than a genetic stomatitis has been this broken fang. No other real issues at all-- he's a good dental patient!

We did a 'geriatric' anesthesia protocol with extra monitors and fluid support, EKG, sevofluorane instead of isofluorane, no ketamine or acepromazine, etc... the works. He was wide awake and ready to come home. He's had his "three bites" snack and he's staring me down as if to say, "Where's the rest?"

Amazingly, he hasn't hissed at anyone and no other cat has hissed at him. This is quite unusual, but no complaints! He's also high as a kite-- he's alert, he's walking steadily, he wants food (he's only getting a little bit for now)... but he's got the "I wanna kiss a lamp pole" thing going on. He's a happy drunk, obviously!

I'm sure he'll feel much better now that the bad tooth is gone and his mouth's all clean. But he will probably have flare-ups from time to time and we'll address those as they come. If we need to do more aggressive therapy later, we will. But for now, this is a good starting point.
