I have recently moved in to a new house and the cat outside (that used to live here) is pregnant. I have been told this is her third litter and one of the previous litters she killed. The girl that used to live here said she left home or a half hour and when she returned the momma had ate the stomachs of the babies. I have become very attached to momma and she now lives inside/outside my house. I am pretty sure she is getting ready to give birth because she has been looking for places to hide, can't stay still for more than 20 minutes, and is wanting attention a lot. I am so scared that I'm going to come home from work and find dead baby kittens! Please help!

My first though my is that she didn't feel like she had a safe place to be in the past. Can you bring mom 100% inside and keep her there? Provide her with a nest and a litter box and unlimited food and water? This should help her to feel safe and calm. If her needs are met, she should feel like she can safely care for her babies.

I don't know for sure what conditions she had prior to me living here, but I have 3 other cats (2 of which are strictly indoor, one that is indoor/outdoor). I have two litterboxes, two food bowls, and two water bowls that are being checked two to three times per day by my boyfriend and myself. Since this is my first time dealing with a pregnant cat, I have been doing a lot of research online. I have a box lined with towels in a corner of my bedroom and also a cat bed that only the momma likes to lay in in the corner of my living room. I am trying my best to set a comfortable area for her but any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your quick response!

That sounds very comfortable. I would recommend moving mom to her own birthing area that is completely private. Her own bed, own food, own water, own litter. Is there a spare room or a spare bathroom mom can stay in? You don't want her around other animals or the outdoors.

I agree that if you can put mom in her own private space she will likely take good care of her kittens and cause them no harm. Please do not allow her outside anymore.

I agree with the others.  The tragedy happened almost surely because of her being stressed. Its not unknown mommas stressed into extremis may turn against their kittens.

Even if the tale about eating out the stomachs isnt the usual.  THIS can happen if they  mismanage to cut off the cords at delivery.  Anyways....

So giving her a secure and safe birthing place and nest is the best solution.

I understand she does meets your residents.  So there is no need of quarentene hygiene-weise.   If she is best friend with them - the separation doesnt need to be total in the same way as if they are just so so pals.  Still, dont take risks.  Supervised visits you can always arrange if they are friends.  If they arent, let her be there safe and sound with her babies....

And of course, when all this is over, please do spay her.   :)
