Happy May everyone!  It sure doesn't feel like May here though.  Our weather has been ridiculous. Either hot or cold and raining.  Mostly the raining.
I normally like a good rainy day because I get more done inside.  But I'm so frustrated at not being able to finish weeding our veggie garden and I have ZERO flowers out.  I need to get my peas in the ground.  It's a little too warm here for a long pea growing season.  I'm not sure it'll happen at all this year at this rate!
So for now I've got some spectacular weeds growing.  Including a gigantic dandelion plant (seriously; it's big!) and some very large clover.  I drive by the garden centers and just sigh...
I may just go buy my flowers one day this week anyway.  And some tomato and pepper plants.

So onto happier spring things; it's Senior Prom season!
(Followed by Graduation season; but I'm in denial about that.)  I just got to see some pictures of my oldest nephew and his date before their prom.  They looked so cute!  Coordinating outfits and way less awkward than I remember kids being when I was that age!

Did you attend your Senior Prom/Senior Ball?  (I'm not sure if these are common overseas; but it's always been a big deal around here.)  What did you wear?

I did attend my Senior Prom.  My high school always had a combined Junior and Senior Prom; hosted by the Junior class.  My Junior year I was on the committee and it was really fun to plan!  I had a great time at Prom; even without a date.  My Senior Prom was a little less fun.  I was set up with the friend of a friend from her job.  She took a guy she was friends with at work and we double dated to their prom and ours.  I'll be honest; I was more excited about having a date than about who my date was and I regretted that about half way through my prom.  I didn't want to ask one of my older or younger guy friends (who wouldn't have already been going).  It was embarrassing to not have a date but asking the few other guy options from my friends would have just made it more obvious my date was paying me a favor.

I had asked a guy I was friendly with to Homecoming Junior year.  I had known him since Middle School and I knew he was just a really nice guy who I would be comfortable going with as a friend.  It took me weeks to get the courage up.  And then he said he wasn't going; but he did!!  He went alone though.  I found out later that he had been asked by a few different girls.  I got the impression he didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.  He was raised in one of those ultra-respectful families.  But that all made me not want to go ask someone myself again!!  I'm just glad it was acceptable to go alone at that time!  I went with a few other friends who didn't have dates Junior year and it was so fun!  We went with some friends who were going together.  The guy thought it was pretty awesome showing up with not 1 but 4 girls.

I wore a fuchsia strapless dress with silver elbow length gloves and silver shoes.  The dress was fairly plain but it had a fold around the top and little buttons down the back.  Besides being all but forgotten when it came to guys; my hair was always a challenge.  It didn't come out quite right and I don't even know how to describe it.
When I went to the other guys prom I just had them put it up in a french twist with some loose curls around my face.  It looked so much better!!
If I get around to it later; maybe i'll add a picture here.

No, I didn't go to the senior prom. It's hard to believe, but we were part of history. My senior year in high school was the year our county schools were integrated. Because the administration didn't want the black kids coming to the prom, it was canceled. A private prom was held in a hotel, and invitations were sent out, but I don't remember whether I got one or not, but I didn't go. I don't know, either, who sponsored the prom.

I made friends with one of the black students during my senior year, and when I saw her ten years later at a reunion, she looked fabulous. No one cared by that time about her race.

Nope.

I wasn't cool enough I guess. Went with a group of girlfriends to see a movie instead.

I wasn't sure if it was junior or senior prom=it was the only one I remember..went with a guy I had been going steady with at highschool. I think it was my senior year. I picked out a coral dress with an opening in the back and puffy sleeves. At that time all the ruffles and pettycoats were already out of style so I couldn't find anything that fit my pear shaped frame with no top to make it look normal. I wasn't going to wear a padded bra. But this one had a diamond shape hem on the waist dipping down..I think I have a photo somewhere, It was back when I was athletic in school so my shoulders look huge but no chest to speak of..oh well. I had medium length hair and made the poof in front. 1994 I believe it was or 1993?

All I wanted to do was EAT the buffett food. I didn't want to socialize. I just was STARVING as usual. Back then I ate two lunches as I was riding my bike all over Derry and Machester NH. I also remember trying to dance but the skirt was getting in my way. They decorated the gym with trees and a bridge type walkway. They did a great job..supposed to be a night time in a park/garden setup. I was impressed with the trees and plants they concealed from pots. It looked really good.

I had a good time. My sister then drove us to Hampton Beach NH and we strolled in the moonlight..It was the most perfect night of my teen years.

No, I didn't go to prom.  I don't think I was asked but it was 1980 and Disco music was chosen.  I wouldn't have gone - hate disco.

My younger brother who was 2 years behind me in school went to 7 proms in one year.  He was a nice guy and would go if he was asked.  He was cute, 6' 3" and blond.  My mom joked it would have been cheaper to buy him a tux that year.

We also had a Junior/Senior with the Junior class putting things together.  I went my Junior year and went to part of it my Senior year.  Ours was an all nighter, banquet, then dance, then a movie, then breakfast.  I didn't go to the dance my Senior year.  I was never big on dances.

I went to both my Junior and Senior prom.  I remember before the Junior prom, I had a rather novel predate experience.  My date and I double dated with another couple and the four of us ended up in my date's car on a lift in a gas station, hoisted up in the air.  A champagne bottle was then whipped out.  Jeez.  It is amazing that adolescents get away with such stupidity.   At least it was only one bottle and my date, who was driving, only drank a little.  We made it safely down to the ground and to and from the dance.

For my Senior prom, I wore a beautiful brocaded outfit.   However, it consisted of a long shirt over pants and no girl at my HS had ever worn pants to the Senior prom before (I'm dating myself here!) so there was some discussion as to whether or not I was dressed appropriately.  They did let me in, though, and I had a great time.

My senior prom I convinced my boyfriend at the time to take me to. My dress was pale pink with a roused botice it had a fake diamond pendant in the center. It was A line cause I'm pear shaped. It was beautiful! The hair dresser messed up and cut my bangs all 80s style it was 1997 ! I had a French twist in the back of my head. I did my own make up. I wore open toed high heels they were died pink to match. My mom made me a pink bag to hold my tickets extra. My oldest daughter whom I was pregnant with at the time ( just barely) just attended her senior prom. She was gorgeous with a silver sequined dress. Her hair was up in a pony tail wth a braid head band curled long bangs. Her make-up was done professionally too with fake nails and a pedicure. I bought her a silver clutch and her shoes where silver and glittery. Hope her wedding is just as magical! LOL

Well, I was pregnant during my senior prom, so we didn't go. But we did hit the post-prom for an hour or so.

No, we don't have school proms in the UK.

We had a "French Exchange Disco" when I was about 14. Our school had an exchange program with a school in France. A group of us did a homestay with them, then the French kids came to stay with us a month later.

We all got very excited and the prospect of meeting French boys, but none of them made much of an impression on me.

My step-sister's old school hosted a group of boys from Ireland.  They made quite an impression on all the girls.
I'm 6 years older than her; it was quite amusing.

You don't have any formal dances?  I think my cousin's high school had 3 formals a year!  (My poor Aunt!
)  Homecoming for us was semi-formal in the fall and then Prom was formal with a dress code.  But my cousin's school had a military ball and a winter ball.

I was happy to be done with high school by the time I graduated.  But I had enough friends and people that I got along with that it wasn't torture to be there.  I enjoyed college much more (without the stereotypical college experiences) because you could just do your own thing.

The university I went to had a May Ball, but I didn't go to that. Not really the ball-gown type of girl.

BTW, what does "Prom" mean? Is it short for something?

I believe its short for Promenade.  My understanding was it started as sort of an American version of a Coming Out Ball; a place to display your etiquette and social graces. (Not exactly things you'll find at most high school proms now; despite the fancy clothing.)  Some schools include a banquet or catered dinner.  Ours only served light refreshments.  And someone spiked one of the punch bowls.)  I think some universities host Balls here; but I went to a small school and I don't recall there being much focus on social activities.

It stands for promotion - everybody was being promoted at the end of the year. A coming out ball would be a cotillion, where a number of eligible debutantes would be presented to society. In my day, only very wealthy families presented their daughters in this way, and I don't think even they do it now.

I found a TIME article; because I apparently have time to kill today.

http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1987594,00.html
It's Time for the prom: that one special night, usually in May, when girls in colorful gowns and boys in ill-fitting tuxedos pose awkwardly for photos that they will cherish (or rue) for the rest of their lives. The night when curfews are broken and limousines are taken for joyrides. The night when the punch bowl might contain more than just punch.

The word prom is short for promenade, the formal, introductory parading of guests at a party. The prom can be traced back to the simple co-ed banquets that 19th century American universities held for each year's graduating class.
Of course there is always Wikipedia too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prom  But I don't have time for all that.
