Hi,
I'm looking for some information for my 11 year old female moggy, Birtie.
Just before Christmas, she had had both her thyroids removed to cure her hypothyroidism.
I have a horrible doubt in my mind that she should not have had both of them removed, but the vet phoned me while in surgery and asked if I wanted her to take out both thyriods and I suppose I panicked a bit and said yes. I didn't want her to have to go through another lot of surgery in the future.
Having said all that, she seems fine. her coat is good and she is playing and being her usual self, maybe just a bit slowed down.
I noticed just today that she has little bald patches on her hocks about 5mm across. It's hard to get a good look, but they don't look sore and she didn't seem to mind me touching them except wanting me to let go of her leg
I think it's unlikely that the bald hocks are from lying down on a hard floor. I do have some tiles in the house, but mostly carpets and she's free to sleep on beds, rugs, etc. She finds somewhere comfy to lie down!
Has anyone got experience of these bald hocks or experience of a cat having both thyroids removed - are they ok without their thyroids and is there anything I should be doing/feeding/looking out for now her thyroids are gone?
thanks for any comments, much appreciated.
Sarah (and Birtie).
