My cat has just gotten his rabies shot around a month ago, but recently he has been finding bats, playing with them, then eating them. Around 3 of them so far in the past 3 days; probably more we haven't seen. I'm wondering if I should take my cat to the vet for a booster shot or something? My Mom keeps saying it's fine, and to not worry, and we don't need to do anything. I just wanna be safe. (I also have another cat who's been in contact with this cat, but no bats)

No, he shouldn't need a booster after a month. You definitely want to keep up-to-date on his shots, though. It's not good that so many bats are getting into your house, and are easy for him to catch. If one is rabid (bats are no more likely to have rabies than any other wildlife, it's just that they're so small they can get into a lot of places and have small bites that go unnoticed), it could bite you while you slept and you'd never know it. I'd recommend calling a bat exclusion company , maybe they can figure out where the bats are getting in and fix it.

Make sure your other cat is also UTD on his rabies vaccine.

He's probably safe on the rabies front, but bats are major vectors for lots of diseases, so you definitely want to prevent him from coming in contact with them, and keep an eye on your cat for any symptoms or changes in behavior.

I agree with the others that the rabies shots are probably fine. Even so, I'd probably call my vet, just in case, to be sure I knew the guidelines for when to get the booster and when not to. We had a bat in our house last summer and one cat was in a room with it alone (before we knew where it was) and so we did get our cats boostered; their shots had been many months before, though.

If the cat is finding the bats in the house, I couldn't agree more with Willowy about getting someone to come and find the bats' likely entrance(s) and prevent more from getting in. Your town's animal control office and/or state public health officials may be able to give you advice on what to do next. There are quite a few incidences of rabid animals in my state (Maine) so our animal control officer and even the scientists at the state rabies lab are very knowledgeable and helpful. Rabies is very scary and you definitely don't want to have to go through the shots!

I agree that your cat is fine, since he's had his shots. If the bats are getting into your house, though, you're at risk and you would need to eliminate them from your house, so that you're safe.
