I just had my 1 year old cat spayed a couple of days ago...here in Egypt, you take the cat back home the same day...she didn't eat, nor drink much & no bowel movements...the day after surgery she went back to the vet for a check up & he gave her 5 injections - 2 antibiotics (Ceftriaxone & Gentamycin), 2 for stomach problems (Ranitidine & Metoclopramide) & a cortisone (Azium)...on the 2nd day post-surgery he gave her 4 injections - 2 antibiotics (Ceftriaxone & Gentamycin), Metoclopramide & Azium...on both days he remarked the incision site was clean & free of any signs of inflammation...he then wrote me a prescription for Prednisone 5 mg 1/2 a tablet once daily & Ceftriaxone 250 mg, 1 ml once daily intramuscular - both for 6days until he saw her next...my question is are all these meds required since she doesn't have any signs of infection, nor inflammation?

That's strange for a spay surgery to have all that medicine after.  I would hold off on the meds and see how she does without them.

I'm sorry you and your poor cat are having to put up with all this. Spaying is a routine operation and techniques have improved drastically since my first cat was neutered in the UK more than forty years ago. Even then there was no medication after the operation. Today, the spayed cat is not even bandaged and there are no routine return visits to the vet to remove stitches.

It is quite normal for a cat not to want to eat until about 18 hours after the operation though some cats need more time to get back to normal eating habits. I have no idea why you have been given so much medication - unless the vet noticed the cat was in a poor condition, but in this case he should not have operated in the first place. I can only suggest you speak to other cat owners in your area to find out if what you are experiencing is normal. However, in the days of Internet and international training I see no reason why a qualified vet in Egypt should operate much differently from those in Europe and the States.

However, even in Germany, where I now live, there are people who prefer to take their cats and dogs to retired vets who previously only dealt with cows and pigs. I m pretty sure that these veterans are not using modern techniques and may prescribe antibiotics and painkillers to compensate.

I hope that everything turns out well for you - fortunately cats are quite resilient. I wish I could be more helpful. Forty years ago we expected a spayed cat to be back to normal after a week - so let's hope you can relax and enjoy your pet at the latest in 6 days?

Good luck.

Thanks for your replies! :)
I'm planning on giving him a call tomorrow as I really do feel a bit strange about all this, especially since my kitty is healthy, active (probably way more than normal) & shows no signs of infection, nor inflammation...I'm ok with giving the IM antibiotic & know that the family of antibiotics prescribed for kitty are the 1st line of antibiotics post-hysterectomy in humans...the prednisone (a cortisone) is what's not sitting well with me...as a dentist, I know cortisone delays healing & that's what really prompted me to ask, since they really don't teach us much about veterinary medicine in dental school ;)...thanks again
