My father's cat, Squeaky, is under veterinary care right now, but the vet is stumped.  Squeaky went to the E.R. two days ago with fever, very dry stool, trace of blood in her urine, nauseous, constipated, lethargic and no appetite.  Her fever was only brought down today, but she is now completely lethargic and hasn't eaten for days.  All of the tests they've run have come back negative.  The vet actually took Squeaky home with her tonight, because she's afraid she won't make it.  Has anyone had a cat with similar symptoms?  Any advice, no matter how obscure, is much appreciated, as this is something the vet has never seen before.  Thank you in advance.

Sorry to hear about Squeaky, I hope she gets better. Is there any chance she got into something toxic, any new plants brought into the house? any kind of chemicals or cleaners used? Is she an indoor kitty?

She goes in and out, so we're not sure if it was something outside.  Definitely nothing inside.  We're in PA, and the ground is covered with snow, so we don't think it was any kind of plant.  The vet asked initially if she could have found antifreeze, but the tests came up negative.  They're just really stumped.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions. I assume x-rays and ultrasound were done?

Just wanted to let you know that people are reading your post.

Thanks, guys.  She has had everything done -- blood work, x-rays, ultrasound -- and they've found nothing.  The vet took her home with her last night, and my dad hasn't heard anything yet this morning.  He's expecting the worst and just waiting for her to call.

Welcome to TCS

I'm so sorry to hear that. It could be that the vet is asking a colleague for some input/advice or just wants to get a better grasp on the situation by observing Squeaky for a while. Hopefully Squeaky will be OK.

Please let your dad know that we are all thinking about him ( you and Squeaky too, of course
) right now. We are all hoping for the best.

Thank you so much.  Still no word.  My dad won't call the vet, because he's dreading what she has to say.  He's still waiting for her to call him.  I'm trying to think positive, but it's hard.

I sure hope the vet finds whatever it is and treats it!  It says a lot for that vet that she has such a vested interest in the kitty.

So she's ruled out GI issues, and toxicity? Cardiac?

Yes, she's ruled out every possible thing she can think of.  This is nothing she's encountered before.  I'm just hoping she had some breakthrough overnight and they just haven't called because Squeaky's not completely out of the woods yet.  Can't bare to think of the other possibility.

Is she on any meds?  So thyroid, kidneys ruled out? It sounds like a mysterious infection that's flying under the radar.  Hopefully some of the advisors will weigh in soon. 'Til then no news is good news. Keeping fingers crossed!

Thanks, Ginny.  She's not on any medication, and they've run the gamut of tests and can't come up with anything.  My dad says the doctor is supposed to call him sometime after noon today (we're EST), and I'm just praying that there's been at least some improvement, which would give us some hope.

Well, the good new is, Squeaky is still with us.  Bad news, she's still not doing well.  The vet brought her back to the office, and my dad went there to visit her.  He was able to get just a tiny bite of food in her, and that's all she's had for days.  He said she just stares and is unresponsive, even when he scratches her ears, which she usually loves and reacts to.  He's leaving her at the vet one more night, and unless she deteriorates even more, he'll bring her home tomorrow, because they've exhausted their attempts to get her back to normal.  The doc is going to give her another steroid today, along with an appetizer pill, which my dad will bring home, along with a syringe to get water into her mouth.  They're thinking it's some kind of cat virus that they've never seen before.

Thanks for your support, everyone.  I really hope there are no other kitties out there going through this same thing, but if there are, I'd love to hear from you.

Do they have her on fluids dropp into her?  I think they should do it.  A good way to buy some extra time.

If your dad does home care, he shall use pedialyte instead of common water.   I will a little later write some suitable link or recipes...

Also, goat milk is good nourishment.  Raw, fresh or frozen is best, but almost any will do.

Goats milk is sometimes used as main treatment for cat animals, lions for example...

It wont not give any miraculous save if she is ill for real, but may be the "tongue on the scale" helping with the recovalescention.

You can add raw egg yolk with this goat milk, and this is possible to forcefeed with syringe too.

They are giving her fluids.  I will give my dad the info about the goat's milk, egg yolks and Pedialyte.  He will definitely try anything to help her get better or at least make her feel better for now.  Thank you so much.
