I know we have a bunch of new people since we discussed the above topic (welcome again all of you - it's great that we have so many cat lovers joining all the time). So here's a reminder.

Many of the members and guests who visit these pages use a dial-up connection. Therefore we have decided (based on a discussion among the members of the board here), that the images in signatures should not exceed file size of 12KB (total for all images if you have more than one).

To check how large the image in your signature is - right-click on the image and choose properties. It will show you the file size in bytes and you can divide that in 1000 to know how many KB your image takes.

Also, please be mindful of the total length of your signature - text and images. Remember that people see your signature multiple times (assuming you post a lot, as most of you do
) and it can get annoying to scroll through inches and inches of signatures.

And a reminder: if you find either signatures, avatars or attached files are slowing you down or annoying you for any other reason - you can switch off any or all of them through the control panel. Simply click where it says usercp or options at the top of the page and go to "Edit Option".

I still ask you to please keep your signatures short and the images in the smaller than 12KB, so we can all surf with signatures turned on and enjoy the messages in them.

Thank you!

Fine! A suggestion: For all those who have a photo larger than 12 KB they can either save it on a format that takes less space (like .jpeg) or resize and make them smaller. Another option is find a photo site that hosts those pictures for free and have the signature read from them in the classic

You have to do that anyway by the way - as that's the only way to have images in your signature. But it doesn't matter where you store the image - it will still slow down the page for people on dial-up.

And Hedi - I'm sorry dear but your image is over 28KB (so well over the suggested 12KB)... It is a lovely image though. Email it to me if you like and I can try to resize the file without damaging the quality. "][email protected]

Hedi I will fix it for you.

Personally I think 12kb is a little too small..
Quality will really stink but I guess you have to do what you have to do.

I'm taking care of Hedi's sig.

Apparently it doesnt matter where its hosted.. its the amount of time it takes readers to download the images is the issue.

Right sicy- when we do get concerns about certain sigs it is from our dial-up users who pay for load time. When the thread has to many large images they are online longer than they want to be and that is why the concerns. Those of you who have cat pages, can link to those cat pages or your website if you have one. That way people can click on the link only and see all your lovely critters.

I know my signature picture is way too large, but I don't know how to resize it without ruining the picture. I have a thumbnail version of the same picture in my storage bin at Image Station, and it's 12587 bytes. Is that the size it should be or can it be larger?

Here is the thumbnail...

I thought the recommended size was 30K? In fact that's what it states in New Cats/Forum Rules. I remember it coming up at some point too and there was discussion about different sizes. It seems it was decided that 12K is too small but I guess this changed?

A note about signatures -
Many of our members have dial-up and when the graphics are large, the posts take a long time to load and puts these members at a disadvantage. Out of courtesy for these members, please try and keep total size of images used to the size of a business card and total file size under 30kb. Thank you for your consideration in this. Any member who displays a larger ad then allowed, may be asked to replace it with a smaller version.

I think 30k is much more reasonable.. and still small enough not to annoy too many users.

That's just what I remembered from the last discussion about it (and it states in the forum rules.) I have to update my siggy anyway. But it won't be tonight. I'm off to bed already. I'm sick. 2 days of nausea, vomitting and vertigo. Yuck!

No worries - you guys are right. The suggested size is 30KB as stated in the Rules. Anne's so busy with two kids and getting back to working, I'm sure it was just an honest mistake.
