It probably is. I know a lot of women who did this.

Me? I'd have to do it for cats LOL.
LOL, That might work for me! My daughter's birthstone is Amethyst and the Boys are both Diamond!  I'm sure I could find a nice ring with those stones.

I have 4 step-siblings so my Mom went with a pendant instead of a ring.  I always wear the necklace DH gave me on our wedding day; which also has my wedding band on it, so I'm leaning toward a ring.  My only problem is my kids birthstones are garnet and emerald...Christmas colors.
My old boss had a ring for her husband, her son and herself that was nice.  DH and I share a birthstone so thats an idea.  But either way I still have Christmas colors.

I inherited this humongous Edwardian cocktail ring from my grandmother via my mom.  She bought it sometime in the late 1960's or early 1970's from an antique dealer.  When my mom passed, my sisters and I split her jewelry; this is one of the pieces I got.  Unfortunately it is way too big to wear.  Finger coverage is ridiculous.  I bring it out only when going to special events like weddings.

I do love the style though.  Love the filigree work on it.  I've thought about making a brooch out of it but really don't want to ruin the integrity of the piece.  So, it sits in a box.  Please ignore my cruddy looking fingernails - I had been doing gel manicures for a few months and it totally ruined them :sigh:

It's a lovely ring and can't see your cruddy nails.

My mother has almost the same ring. The only difference if there are some sapphire chips on each side of the middle diamond. I agree with you though, it's huge!
You should say goodbye to the filigree and make something you can wear out of the ring.

Why do you wear your wedding ring on a necklace?

Not a diamond person.  In fact, I refused my grandmother's 3 carat solitaire, and saved it for my elder son's wife.  My own ring was a 2 carat marquise cut amethyst flanked on each side by a very tiny diamond, set in Mexican silver with a very baroque band.   A dear friend made the ring for us.   I lost the ring, as well as any photos of it in a house fire. several years ago.

Why don't you have it refitted, enlarged?
It has channel set stones; if you enlarge it it compromises the security of the stones.  Your likely to lose one or some.  We actually ordered it directly in my size so that the stones would be more secure.  I think my ring is a 5 1/2 and I I think I'm needing a 7 now. That's a good size jump!

unfortunately that happens. When I got my engagement ring I weighed 112lbs now I weighave $$/%÷ lbs.
I gave it to my daughter. When I got divorced I sold my wedding ring and all the little pieces of gold I had broken earrings etc. Got quite a nice sum! !!! Why doesn't your husband buy you a new wedding ring for your birthday? You'll still wear your original one, or am I getting too personal.

Beautiful and timeless ring.  Just lovely.

I haven't ruled out a smaller stone. I think it will all depend on which setting I wind up with.  My sweet spot for size seems to be between .60 and .90.  I really do not like anything much larger.

FYI, all diamonds should come with an inspection report; preferably GIA for round in particular.  There are also tools you can use to judge light performance to rule out poor performers.  That, and ASET photos which will show where the light is leaking out and to judge the cut of the facets.

I've been doing an enormous amount of leg work on this LOL

I think larger stones regardless of their quality don't have the same sparkle and fire as smaller stones.  Of course I don't travel in circles where people have large stones that are near perfect either.

Totally true that you should get an inspection report with any of them. It's also really challenging to see where the differences are when you don't look at them specifically. My fiance picked mine out and he looked at a ton of different diamonds before picking it out. I wasn't part of the decision process since he bought the ring a few months after we started dating (since he knew then he wanted to marry me).

I have always liked the tri-stone (yesterday, today, tomorrow) rings. Except I wanted the outside stones to be our birthstones and the middle one a diamond. That way it would bring us both together as one.

**Note: I've been married twice and only had one engagement ring; it was a 1/4 ct cluster and I didn't pick it out, his mom did.

I have no intention of getting married again.

OMG I had NO idea that's what the 3 stones represented ROFL

P.S. I'm hoping this is the last for me also! I was married in my late 20's - big mistake for that one.  Then, I think I was in my very late 30's or early 40's for the 2nd one.  That lasted 8 years (better!).  He was married in his early 20's - and that didn't last very long although him and the ex (who is now deceased) had been together since their teen years.  Hence why it probably didn't last.

I think I can safely say at 56 that this will be the last one.  As I already mentioned we're getting too tired of this

I do know a lot of people with bigger diamonds.  Most in fact.  I work in a professional industry where people make good money, as do the partners of those who work here.  The women who are married/engaged in my office all have fairly larger size stones in their E-rings.  Two of them certainly are in the 2 carat range.

To be honest, there is a part of me which feels like I need to compete. On the other hand, I'm too practical to do so.  I'm also realistic - my BF is a full time student and the only reason he's able to afford it now is due to his parents passing and inheriting some money.  He had received some cash in hand before his mom passed, and ear marked a chunk of it to give me a ring.  I do not want him to have to spend more than he's able to by any means. My feelings for him don't hinge on the size of stone he can afford.  Plus, he can always buy me something else down the road; I figured by the time we actually manage to make it legal later in the year, the estate will have resolved and perhaps he'll be able to afford an eternity band as the marriage band.

FYI - I've promised him some bling too lol.  We saw a really great band for him which can fit in a nice smaller stone, a square cut.  He is almost as excited by that, as I am ROFL.

Some people also say is represents today, tomorrow and always.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it.

Thanks Karen, good advice.  I've been looking at cushions already - I prefer the chunkier looking ones.

I had seen a vintage marquis yesterday which was stunning - about .80 carat.  Someone suggested setting it east/west (sideways) to make it easier to wear.  I would be worried about the pointed ends if it were as a solitaire  - I'm really hard on stuff.  But, then I remembered one of my sisters has a marquis so I'm like - nah, maybe not.

I didn't think about the wedding band problem, thanks for mentioning it.  My first ring was very simple so finding a band to go with it was easy.  Last time, I did get the band at the same time and they went together well.  But that was a solitaire as well, although set differently.  It was easy to match up.

Everything I'm looking at that is vintage would possibly be a problem. I'd need to take that under consideration for sure.  I wouldn't mind getting a plain band if need be.

BTW, there is a solitaire setting I am coveting by Danhov.  It's incredibly modern and I could only get a round stone in it (and possibly a size he can't afford right now) but my heart flutters every time I see it:

ETA I just noticed they can make it custom to fit any size stone.  For the price, they should!
That's a gorgeous setting! I've noticed that rings that cut straight across my finger make my fingers look even shorter than they already are. This setting would nestle onto your left ring finger beautifully.

When I got married, we belonged to a church that was down on jewelry. Engaged women wore their wrist watches on their right wrist as a signal that they were engaged. But that didn't work very well outside of the church, and not at all after we married; guys kept hitting on me in the bus and refused to believe me when I said I was happily married, so eventually I gave up and bought a ring. Mine has a large opal, in a setting that doesn't cut straight across my finger. At the time I bought it, opals were seriously undervalued, which is why I could afford it. Give me opals over diamonds any time!

As for resetting the stones in your second E ring, have you considered having them made into earrings?

Margret
