We got an orphan kitten who's now around 3 months old. He had a hip problem when we first got him, he was 1 week old. He would drag his hind legs behind him and walk with lowered hip. He seemed to get better. We didn't think much of it.

Now I looked it up and he's showing symptoms of hip dysplasia. He rarely jumps and doesn't run much. Whenever I let him chase a piece of cardboard on a string, he doesn't like to run and after a little running he gets tired. He climbs the couch rather than jumps on it. He also sometimes hops with both hind legs. He's got a very narrow pelvis and his hind legs sometimes hurt, even if you just pick him up wrong, and he would limp if he jumps wrong. We thought he might have just hurt his leg and let him heal. But now it seems like something's wrong.

Today he seems worse. His tummy is firm and he complains to me. He's normally very quiet but today he mews when he gets on my lap, letting me know that he's hurting. His tummy seems firm in the upper belly, and he's hunched over, with the lower back arched inward. So he sits like a frog with his lower belly flat on the floor, lower back arched inward, and upper back hunched over, with his arms and shoulders tense, supporting his weight. He usually poops once a day, and he did this morning. He usually has best appetite during the night and not so much during the day, so I can't tell right now if he's not eating right.

We are building a house and barely have any money, even for our food; but he doesn't eat much being a kitten, so he has enough food. So, I have no idea what to do and where to go. Today everything's closed. But do the symptoms sound like an emergency? He seems okay just laying down or sleeping.

This kitten definitely needs to go to a vet. Kittens actually eat a lot, more than you would imagine. If he's not eating or playing, combined with the symptoms you're seeing, he is likely in a lot of pain.

Maybe you could contact the SPCA or a shelter for advice. Is it possible that kitty may have worms? Hopefully, they can direct and help you. Take care.:silver:

This actually does sound like an emergency situation to me, simply because your kitten is in so much pain.  You should definitely get him in to see the vet by tomorrow.  Check out these articles for info on low-cost vet care.

I know it's very hard when finances are a concern.  Good luck and I hope this little boy feels better soon.

He's taken a nap and doesn't complain anymore. He feels fine in fact. He's eating his favorite chicken. His tummy felt fine when he was laying down and relaxed. I think his tummy tenses up when he's trying to stand or sit up. But this is what he looks like. I know I gotta take him to the vet, but what am I looking at here? I am seriously suspecting hip dysplasia, but he wasn't this bad before. We came home and noticed this. Right now I'm guessing he jumped wrong or fell and displaced his hip. He can walk, but can't jump at all even up a small box.

I don't know how much an X ray would cost. We can probably take care of a vet appointment but beyond that...

I'm glad to hear he's feeling better.  He sounded like he was really hurting before.  That's a very strange posture - I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like that.  I would at least take him to the vet and find out what you might be dealing with and what will be needed for an actual diagnosis.  Another way to pay I forgot to mention before is to apply for a carecredit card or to ask your vet if (s)he'll take a payment plan.  Fewer and fewer vets are doing that these days, but you might get lucky.  He's a very beautiful boy - I have a black cat as well, and think they're great!

He definitely needs an x-ray. Something has got to be wrong with his hips or spine. I hope you will be able to find help with the bills because this little kitty needs some medical attention.
