I'm an apple season baby.  I always used to ask for Apple Squares for my birthday.  My Gram was a master pie baker.  So she'd make a sheet of basically apple pie baked in a cookie sheet.  I'd take that over 10 cannoli cakes!  I make a good apple pie; but it doesn't taste quite like Grams!  My cousin has a November birthday and he always wanted the same.

One year when DH and I had just been married maybe 2 years at the most; I told him I wanted blackberry cobbler for my birthday.  I showed him where they were pre-made and frozen in the grocery store.  So he got one and baked it.  And stuck the candles in while it was still hot.  You can imagine what happened when we tried to pull the candles out!!
We ended up getting in the car and going to get dessert at Bob Evans.  And they happened to have blackberry cobbler on the menu!
After we got home and the cobbler had cooled; I picked the now hardened chunks of wax out  and enjoyed some of the berries!  Such a memorable birthday!
DH has always been willing to step outside of his comfort zone for me!

For the chocolate lovers here, I have a recipe for the best chocolate cake on the face of this earth, followed by the best chocolate frosting. It is Hershey's Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake (and frosting) and the recipe is usually found on the back of the Hershey's Cocoa container. Oh gosh, it is so good and so chocolatey. It's divine. I make it every year for the DH of one of my girlfriends. His favorite cake is a good chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. So I make the Hershey's cake, but then I make my whipped peanut butter frosting and they come down for dinner, followed by cake and coffee. I swear that man can eat half of an oblong cake by himself. He says the only good thing about his birthday and becoming another year older is that cake!

The whipped peanut butter frosting is here: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/238191/cakes-and-other-baked-desserts Scroll down and you'll find it. Yum

I really don't know! :lol3: How crazy is that? I was craving carrot cake and Boston cream pie, but got my fix over the holidays. A local restaurant makes a pistachio cake that is really good. For my mother's 80th I made a three layer cake that was two layers of chocolate and a middle layer of chocolate chip cheesecake. I could go for that right about now. :lol3:

For years my two choices of birthday cakes have been 1) Chocolate Sheet Cake with Chocolate butter cream frosting (an old family recipe) and 2) Prune Cake.  Yes, prune cake.  Don't judge me!  It tastes like spice cake and has this delicious buttermilk/caro syrup drizzle that goes over the top and sinks into the cake.  OMG it's so good!  Both cakes are to die for (and from probably).

An Italian rum cake, which I haven't had in years. There are plenty of Italian restaurants around here, but no Italian bakeries, so I'd have to make it myself.

OMG, it is one of my fav's also.  Being Italian, it was always the go to cake for birthdays.  My mom and I always shared a birthday cake since our special days were only two days apart.  Italian Rum cake from a good Italian bakery is the best.

Yes!  My Gram always had one for her birthday!  From the same bakery that makes the Canoli cake I'm craving.  I could go for both now that you mention it!

I wonder whether I should call all the local Italian restaurants and ask whether they have it on the menu? I can't get it when I visit my sister, either. I guess I need a trip back to Philly! :lol3:

Now you guys are making me want cake!
It's hard to say, I like a lot of them. All the ones you guys mentioned sound good!   My fav. used to be white cake w/ chocolate icing. Now, It changes every year. LOL!

Just depends on what I'm wanting. My mom usually will ask me, or just make something.  Last year, I asked for orange cake w/ chocolate frosting, & that was really good!!  I like strawberry too, but my mom doesn't, so I have never asked for that, because then she wouldn't eat any.  ......and yes, anything chocolate is good!!

Oh, if someone were going to give me one, I'd like a really truly genuine Southern caramel cake.  That isn't happening.  I'll be baking my own, so I'm thinking about a cheat cake.  Cheat cakes are mix cakes with the oil and water  replaced by canned pie filling.  For my birthday in March, I'll be doing a spice cake with apple pie filling and cream cheese frosting.  Or maybe caramel frosting if I feel really brave.  For my neighbor's birthday, I'll do a yellow cake with peach pie and white buttercream frosting.  And if my son happens to be in this state for  his birthday...a peanut butter cream cheese pie with hot fudge sauce.  Forget the cake.  That's what he wants.
