So I just talked to a volunteer at the clinic and asked for the directors number, and she asked me the situation. The volunteer AT the clinic... Was appalled by what happened and said she has never heard of any place charging for being there while an animal is euthanized and that this is the first she heard of it. She gave me the directors # and told me to keep calling her until i got a call back and that she was currently in a meeting. Sounds like it's going to be quite a shock to the director as well. Hopefully this helps other animals in the future .. I'll update when I talk to her

Well, this is encouraging. I really hope your report shakes the place up. What happened to you and Jäger was inexcusable. So glad you are going to the top. Best of luck! [emoji]128077[/emoji]

Please, please do.  I still shake every time I open this thread.  Try to be fairly calm when you talk with the director, but don't hesitate to let her know just how badly this has affected you.  You need to be clear, and concise, but not at the expense of her understanding your pain.  A hard line to walk, my dear.  I know.  But try.

You mean that they normally do NOT charge anything to be put to sleep?how can they afford that? Anathesia drugs are expensive.
Don't see hiw anyone does it for free. I was charged $25.00 just to drop off a small kitten that showed up at my moms house and they were hoping to adopt it out

I think it depends. For us personally we had been in and out of that clinic for 3 months. There were a lot of fees waived or reduced. When I asked I was simply told we had been through enough. I seriously doubt they lost money on us. A humane society that operates on donations likely doesn't have that discretion.

Wanted to add how much we appreciated the effort and heart that went into trying to save our little girl And even then we were overwhelmed by the events. Which makes what the OP went though all the more horrific. The vets and staff at the VCA had obviously been trained to help us through this difficult process. The sweet vet who put her to sleep wasn't faking or going through the motions. I can't remember but when I seen her eyes try and tear up I may have comforted her. Veterinarians cannot and should not become overly emotionally invested in any pet. At the same time it would be inhuman of then not to have a moment of sadness.  The OP deserved so much more and so did his cat.

Wow, I am so sad and disappointed after reading this thread.  I am so so sorry for your loss and for the manner in which it occurred.  I think it is great that you are reaching out to the director of that office of the humane society so that they may be aware of the events taking place in their center.  Keep us posted...

Some vets get more emotional than others, and I am sure that they react more to some animals than others. If a vet has been treating an animal for a long time, then there is bound to be more emotion, and maybe a sense of failure, if the animal dies. I have had a vet waive charges for PTS, and even for an autopsy, in some circumstances. But there must always be professionalism and humanity, and that is what I think was completely lacking in this case.

Noo, that's not what I was saying. They charge $90 for the euthanization and THEN say you have to pay an extra $100 to BE THERE when it gets out down.

Anyway I have an update folks I talked to the director and she said THEY ARENT SUPPOSED TO CHARGE FOR THAT. She was very disturbed and is conducting an investigation today, going in and talking with all the people working at the time. She told me she already knew the vet I was talking about, the Spanish one, and that there has been some language barrier problems. I suggested let her talk to Spanish customers and have an English speaking one for English speaking people.. This is a little more important than checking someone out at the gas station or grocery store. I want CLEAR explanations when it's the life of an animal, thanks.

She also couldn't believe they told me he'd be fine on the phone then it was a different story when we arrived. She also said the smelling candles giving cats infections is BOGUS and that she lights candles for her animals all the time!! The director was nice and helpful, and is giving me a call soon with what she finds out.. Thanks everyone

This is a much better outcome! So glad you were able to find the correct person to talk with.

I realize nothing will bring your baby back, but hopefully her death will result in some positive actions so that no one else has experience the horrors that you had...((hugs))

My condolences on your loss and the horrible experience at the vet . I go to three different vets( I do trap/neuter/rescue so times I trap and health of the animal often dictate where I go) . The one time I had to euthanize a kitty, the place did charge about $100 extra to stay with him, luckily I had the money to do so at the time . I had to rush my tabby Asher to an ER vet once and it was close to $800 .I was floored but the place was very competent and saved his life. My "true" longtime vet is extremely compassionate and has given us discounts many times. I myself would escalate the situation same as you have been doing .I would also go the social media route just to warn others of what occurred at that vet office .
I know you've been through a lot however maybe you can volunteer at an animal shelter for a day or look for a 5k run/walk to do in Jägers honor at some point. So sorry you had to go through this.

It sounds like something very funny is going at that clinic. I hope the Director gets toth e bottom of it. It may be that someone has been making pocket money out of grieving owners.

Oh my gosh...I am so sorry for your terrible experience, and for your loss of Jäger.  I really hope the Director conducts a thorough investigation and prevents this from happening in the future.  RIP Jäger.

The director left me a voicemail however I was working and couldn't pick up. I am going to call back tomorrow to hear the details of what she has to say. I also am now worried that a kitten a rescued about a month ago could be in jeopardy if jäger had something like feline leukemia.. Going to bring her in asap to a vet for an appointment. I am trying to focus my energy on her and the other cat to make sure they are ok! Will keep everyone updated on what the director says when I can contact them. Thanks again everyone for the support and condolences has helped a lot...
The new kitty is the white Siamese. I found her meowing on my doorstep at 3am.. She ran away and I looked for a half hour and gave up. When I returned to my door step I found her white rump poking out from behind the trash can!!

Beautiful cats.  What are their names?

I am interested to hear what that director has to say.  Just a thought, if you don't get satisfactory answers from the director, you might see if they have a webpage, and if so, if there is a comment area.  That might shake a few trees.

What beautiful cats! It was so good of you to rescue the little Siamese. Here's hoping he gets a clean bill of health at the vet. Looking forward to hearing how your conversation with the director goes.

First off, let me say I grieve with you, I just lost my cat yesterday (1/8), he was only 6, and he crashed and passed away after a normally safe procedure that had been done twice before. My vet is very blunt, but I like him for it, so I did not receive much sympathy on my end either. But, I also didn't expect it, its enough that I wasn't charged for my overnight stay for him, however I do have a relationship with my vet, he knows my situation. Its quite similar to yours, no money, mid twenties, but I actually work with animals and they are my life and children, so my vet knows I'll be down there with my rent money if I have to. We're not entirely sure what killed him, my vet believes he threw a blood clot from stress, but unfortunately without an autopsy I'll never know, and it will break my heart for the rest of my life.

I can tell you, from a veterinary perspective, it can be extremely difficult to communicate with pet parents when you just don't know exactly what's going on. This no way excuses the awful bedside manner you were put through, but sometimes vets just don't know what's going on. I had a cat who died at 5, from 1 year on he had awful digestion issues, and we ran every blood test and physical exam we could short of exploratory surgery, and we never had a concrete answer as to what went on during all that time. Please please please carry in your heart though that you made the right decision, even though you're going to feel as if you didn't. It is never the wrong choice to end suffering when there is true suffering going on.

I also, am not big on the idea of the afterlife or Gods or anything of that nature, but I do like to think our pets souls get so e kind of comfort after death, its really the only way I can cope. Even if that afterlife if the memory of our pets in our hearts, I know in my heart, Yoda, my cat who had passed at five, welcomed my Dubs into his home, and they patiently wait the arrival of all their brothers.

Well first of all I am very sorry that you had to go through all that nonsense and stress, and while I did read some of the posts where you got to say your thing to some people at those places I didn't read them all, but I hope you at least get some money refunded; I know that won't help bring your Jager back, but you shouldn't have had to have gotten ripped off as well as deal with the other nonsense!

But I can say as far as the part of dealing with the loss is very hard, even for us men; I am 55 and have lost pets over the years but just went through a horrible ordeal with our Sebastian that I talked about on here-I'm sure you can scroll down and find it- and he passed away in my arms on November 23rd, very stressful and traumatic and your situation was also so rushed and chaotic and traumatic, so I think we were both hit with the same type of stressful situation, just different in some ways. But I know that it is very hard to deal with, you are of course upset when it happens, then you feel somewhat better only to have it come back and hit you with another "wave" as my pastor told me happens. Last Sunday I had to meet her at her house to talk about it, how it was still troubling me months later, and she said it was all normal grief feelings, that she tells people "it takes at least a year before we start to feel better when a person dies", and said "I'm sure it is very similar for pets, especially if you have a strong bond with them" and we do, and you did too with him, so it hits HARD, and can give you all kinds of symptoms both mentally, physically and emotionally, but with time and as we deal with it it becomes less intense, and I think that you and I going through such a traumatic way of having them leave us made it about 50 times harder on us!

Hang in there friend, you did what you had to do and it sounds like it was the right choice albeit a very difficult one. Sorry for your loss, I know how you feel.....
