There is so much gloom and doom out in the world right now that many people are focusing on the negative and not the positives. So let's think about the positives for a minute. What's one positive thing that's happened to you in the past 24 hours?

For me, I welcomed the New Year with my husband.

We went to our favorite restaurant last night. The waitress wanted to know if any others were joining us and hubby told them no. She took our order. In just a few minutes a couple we are good friends came in and we invited them to sit with us. We enjoyed their company. They insisted on buying our meal. Unexpected, but a blessing.

We found out from our insurance agent yesterday that we get a discount on our insurance that will take several hundred dollars off of our auto and homeowner's insurance over the next year.  It's not often that insurance premiums go down instead of up for the next year!

Fluffy laid down next to me on the couch and went to sleep.  I refused to move for 2 hours because this is a rare occurrence.  She even rolled up against me and for a little bit laid on her back with her paws in the air and bent.  I can count on one had the number of times she has done this.  She stays off the furniture.  I wish I had a camera.

Kudos, Laura; I hope it goes well for you.

Jenny, I'm glad Mia is eating!

MickNsnicks2mom, that's so neat about the kittens...congrats!

Betsy, wonderful about the insurance discounts!

Barbara, that was so nice of your friends to do that for you.

This didn't just happen during the past 24 hours, but it's kind of cool and I want to share.

Rick's sister's husband (they've been married for about 40 years now) was an alcoholic, now long-time recovering. We never had much to do with them, largely because we always felt that he didn't like us, thought he thought he was better than us, etc. He simply wasn't in a good place for quite a while. And even after he quit drinking, we just didn't do much with them. He and I have talked about it and he admits that it took him a long time to get his head on straight.

Well, when Rick's dad became so ill and he eventually passed away back in May, my BIL and I started texting back and forth. It was nice to be able to talk about things with somebody else who was (kind of) on the outside looking in, if that makes any sense. He is a SIL, I'm a DIL, and while we know we are a close part of the family, a lot of what was going on was really not our business. The whole power-of-attorney thing, the upcoming sale of the house, things like that. We're not a part of that, nor do we wish to be. Anyway, he's a pretty neat guy. He loves to smoke meat, he loves to bake, he loves to cook. We are constantly sharing recipes, comparing recipes, asking/answering questions. He's the one who got me into smoking; in fact, he gave me my first smoker. We've made sauerkraut together, we bake together. He'll text me with bread questions; I'll text him about doing something in the smoker. He loves gardening, too, and he and Rick have been constantly talking about what 2016 will bring in the way of our veggie gardens. He's really a very interesting man in his own way. The four of us have been getting together for dinners and doing things. We've been together more often during the last part of the year than we ever did the whole time Rick's sister has been married.

Yesterday, he had texted to wish us a Happy New Year. Well, I had a question about something I had read in Mother Earth News (love that magazine, BTW). So he called me. We were chatting and I told him that one of the nicest things that happened to me personally in 2015 was getting to know him. Not just as my SIL's husband, but as a friend. I've enjoyed texting with him and I've enjoyed baking with him. And I wanted to thank him for being there during all this stuff with Rick's parents. I've enjoyed getting to know him, after all these years.

Things got a little quiet. And then he said that that was probably the nicest thing anybody has ever said to him. But I meant every word. It's nice having him as a friend as well as my BIL. (My SIL called me later and thanked me; she said that meant the world to him.)

So that's something that I think is positive for all of us in the long run.

I really needed this thread. It can be hard to find the speck-of-dust-sized positive stuff on some days. I did some "100 Days of Happy" thing on Facebook last year. I can say there were days where I had to search my soul to find that positive thing, but since I was doing 100 Days of Happy, i had to hunt for it. And it made a difference.

It's actually sunny out. Yeah, it's cold, but after so many days of gloom and clouds and blah outside, it's nice to have some sunny. Makes me actually want to leave the house.

I'm really getting good at cutting Pepcid pretty evenly with a knife. I haven't completely obliterated one in ages.

Actually, I don't know if that is a good or bad thing, but I'll take what I can get.

That's impressive, I'm terrible at cutting them with a pill cutter! I'm always trying to match up the big pieces with the little pieces, lol

I've been doing it since October 27th, with the exception of a small hiatus in the second half of November. Originally I was lucky if half the pill was still of use after I was done because the rest just exploded it seemed. And then there was the fun of having the pieces shoot across the room. Thank goodness I was good at finding them. Then I finally got to the point where they didn't shoot across the room anymore - I was so happy just with that! But then today when cutting them, they were almost perfect in half. I wowed myself!
