I am so enjoying the Adventures of Mook and Mercy.  I know it is a difficult time for you, but this little mite obviously needed you.  How could the previous owners have been so clueless of normal kitten behavior?  I can't count the number of times my leg has been mistaken for an elm tree at supper time!  So glad Hekitty is a grand dame of seven years, and not 4 months any more...although, I so enjoyed that age, as well (shredded thighs not withstanding).
I had forgotten what it's like having a wrecking ball in the house. Mercy got herself returned because she belongs here. If I had been any quicker to claim her there could have been a pass off in the parking lot and the Animal Shelter not involved. I don't bond easily with animals. I love them but they just don't dig in.. Both of us had an instant connection. If they had tried to refuse her for adoption I probably would have resorted to anti social behavior in the form of kitten napping. It was that bad , for both of us. When I'm hurting I circle the wagons. I broke the sound barrier getting to the city. In less than a week she's fully integrated into our home.

BTW have I mentioned I just love torties ?

Seems Mercy and Mook have reached an understanding. Mercy can't sit on her back and Mook won't hiss and swipe. Mercy is a bit of an enigma. She has excellent social skills both human and cat. I left my lunch sort of sit exposed and she started over and one little tch. And she moved away. None of the over and over repeat offending. She is not happy about being crated at times but does not hoot howl or hang on the door. She does wiggle awful when you go to put her down. So we're working on the game that's worked for Kitten and for Mook . Even then are no claws or biting. Just a bit much anticipation. Honest for a 4 month old baby it's hard to see what anyone could gripe about. Right now she would love to come lay on my arm but she's been there enough today and the windows are open and now instead of being a bit clingy she's off doing baby things. Unless she turns into a gremlin when wet I have no idea how she came with baggage. Sometimes it would be nice to have a chat with someone and see exactly what precipitated her being brought back to the shelter.

This really makes me wonder how Mercy was treated in her former "home." It was her lucky day when she was surrendered and you adopted her. She sounds like such a sweet, loving little girl. And I'm so glad things are going well with Mook! [emoji]128077[/emoji]

Cats don't tolerate abuse. She shows no signs of ever having been hit or physically punished. She's sleeping on a pillow now belly up purring to herself. She is a bit reserved around my husband but he hasn't spent nearly as much time with her yet. He's the keeper of the Mook when he's home. But she warms up to him after a few moments. She makes direct eye contact and will blink back at me and my husband. She has used her wiles and charm to ingratiate herself with Mook. She's not afraid of her crate. She'll nap on the heated pad and use the litter box in there when it's open. Even goes there for her food. She has gotten the idea the front door is a no no when I'm going in and out. I don't know , Maybe they brought the wrong cat back. I haven't seen her around children but I wouldn't let any of my small nieces or nephews play with her anyhow. Something made them bring her back and I'm not putting a child or her at risk for injury.

It was really hard to put Mercy in her crate last night. Her and Mook are doing so well. Remind me why it's important to give this a bit more time before I leave them out together while I sleep at night. That one big setback could mean weeks of reestablishing Mercy in the house.

Oh, you might have mentioned it, thereby winning a place in my heart that is reserved just for other tortie fanatics.  It's been over 20 years since I've been owned by a cat that wasn't either tortie or calico.  There's just something about them.  Somewhere on here is the story I retold about why tri-colored cats protect homes from fire.  If you haven't run across it, you might search it.  I think you'd get a kick out of it.

Mook gave butt wiggle and pounced at Mercy. Right now they are eyeballing each other trying to figure out how this all works. Mook lives to play. And mom isn't giving her much support tonight. The little stinky thing is starting to look attractive.

They are both in their respective little pink cubes negotiating the rules of engagement.

Mook says everything is hers but Mercy can now breath her air.

Oh good!  We progress!  Poor Mook's widdle kitteh nose was so very out of joint, a most painful condition for anyone, but especially for a cat!  I can't wait to see what happens next.

You know, as soon as I open my inbox, I have to immediately check for this thread, as well as for the lovely "For My Kitten" thread.  They are like the punctuation marks of my day, the beginning and the ending.

My hope is that the two will merge and just be part of our lives as a whole. We don't want the part of our lives that included Kitten to just fade away but we want Little Mercy to have the full life she's entitled to. We make sure Mook gets the lions share of attention right now. I felt awful for crating her again last night. But it is the one absolute way to make sure we don't backslide. Mercy has the most come hither look when trying to engage Mook. Mercy is incredibly mature and child like at the same time. One tsk. or ehh. is enough to dissuade her from doing something. She seldom repeats the behavior. Not that there is a lot of bad behaviors. This is more about safety like stay off the stove kind of things. Mook walked by the baby this morning letting her body rub against hers , Just in passing of course. We know a cat never touches anything by accident.

She got overstimulated this morning while I rubbed her tummy. Not only doesn't this kitten not bite or scratch she pulled herself back from doing it. Go figure.

I love the butt wiggles! The boys and Penelopy have totally been butt-wiggling the the last several days. Finally accepting each other. Although Oscar and Penelopy had a little face off last night. Both on hind legs but no growling or anything. And then a stare-off for a full 30 seconds and like that, all was good again. Amazing.

I have a serving tray I keep handy to break eyesight between them if necessary. Mook did clop Mercy on the head yesterday but it was not inappropriate aggression. She was just asserting her dominance as the adult cat. I had to break out the second cube since Mook uses hers like an exoskeleton. She will roll it from room to room with her in it. It's how she greets strangers. They even ate on the table together this morning. Opposite ends but they were both there.

Yeah butt wiggles are good things. We have to go out in a bit and the baby will be crated. We're only one week in. It's easy to forget.

I have a firm knowledge that the two will merge gracefully, and become a positive blessing in your life.

With all the problems her previous guardians reported, I can only think that she was just determined to get to you, by any means necessary.  Call me...well...I won't say superstitious, but I'm definitely a little stitious!  And isn't she precious all passed out!

I even had a short discussion with the person who did the intake on ' Fluffy ' . So it wasn't all just boxes checked on a piece of paper and stuck on her cage. I had a phone conversation with the Animal Warden. I will never understand what made it so urgent for me to drive back into the city considering the emotional mess I was and get this kitten. I can't explain to someone who didn't know Kitten that when I put my finger though to sniff she reached out touched it and then gave that head gesture that says hey. Or the fact that when I held her she latched on and so did I. The absolute panic to run to the front desk and complete the application in everyone else in the city was there to get her ahead of me. I probably would have mugged someone in the parking lot if that had happened. I tried to attribute it to her looking so much like Kitten. But to be honest the picture of her didn't reveal much detail. In fact she has a secret mark that I did not even notice until two days later. She never held still. Ok I'm not whacko get this girl on some medication. I know this is NOT Kitten. Never will be. I'm not going to try and mold her into Kitten. Quite honestly I'm used the universe taking a dump on me. I'm trying to find a way to graciously accept this gift without waiting for the asteroid to come crashing though the roof.

Of course not.  That's not quite what I meant about the two merging.  More that the memories of Kitten and the reality of Mercy would work together to...I don't know how to say this.  I'm a bit on the esoteric side on occasion ~sounds of wild laughter from those who know her in the background, "A BIT?"~, so I often get tangled up trying to express a feeling, a knowing.  Kitten will never truly leave you, Mercy will build her own place in your heart, and, to quote Julian of Norwich, "and all will be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."

I think some of my previous post was me trying to reassure myself I am not trying to replace one animal with another. And in reality it's not wrong. Not everyone sees pets in the same light. As long as they are well cared for and loved it's not necessary to think of them as family members or fur babies or even substitute children. Which is pretty close to the level we see ours and indulge to that extent. At the same time I don't think it's strange to choose a cat that has the same basic personality traits that meshed with your own personality so well. Without any doubt I carry some misplaced guilt about bringing in this baby so soon after we lost Kitten.

Right now Mercy is rearranging the kitchen floor and even took swipes at Mook's tail. And lived.
